Whether you're towing a dump trailer, box trailer, or your family's tow-behind camper, you should always check to make sure that your load is evenly distributed and within the capacity of the vehicle towing it. You can measure and do the math yourself, or you can trust JD from Big Truck Big RV and his tongue weight scale to do it for you.

Hand on scale

One of the great things about this tongue weight scale is that you bring the scale to the coupler instead of cranking the coupler down to the scale. With an impressive 20-1/2" height, this scale should easily reach the coupler on most standard trailers. It locks in 2" increments with an easy-squeeze lever so you can fine-tune the height, which means less cranking on the jack to get your trailer to the height where it needs to be. Once everything is set up, you'll only have to raise your trailer jack about 1-2" off the ground to transfer the weight onto the scale and get an accurate reading on the gauge. By keeping the jack low to the ground, you minimize any chance of the trailer tongue falling, which keeps you safe. There is also a set screw built into the body of the scale to make sure that the foot doesn't fall out.

Close-up of Gauge

There is a really neat feature on the gauge that shows your tongue weight in tons. This indicator lets you see at a glance if you're approaching a weight range that could be too high for your current vehicle to handle. If you see that happening, try rearranging your load to lessen the tongue weight. If that doesn't work, you may need to consider moving up to a heavier-rated tow vehicle.

Close-up of Bag

You are going to want to keep this scale with you all the time. The Big Truck Big RV bag is stylish and functional. The material is durable and weather resistant making it great for tossing in the back seat or in the trailer. Not only does the scale fit in here, but you can throw in other small essentials like wiring adapters or rags for greasy hands.

The scale has an aluminum body with a powder coated steel foot and latch that are built to last. We've tested this scale and pushed it to the limit to make sure it is safe and easy for everyone to use. We don't recommend using it on unlevel ground or at an extreme angle because that could damage the scale and may not read your actual weight. Also, always make sure your wheels are chocked while using the scale to prevent your trailer from moving.

BTBRV Safety Insert

With etrailer's limited lifetime warranty, you can rest assured that this scale will last.

I got a chance to use this, and am a big fan of the lever allowing you to very quickly adjust the height of the scale to match your trailer. Other tongue weight scales I've used required finding blocks/wood scraps to build up to try and keep the trailer level when getting the reading. The tongue weight I got seemed about what I expected it to be, though I did not double check with a CAT scale or anything to verify the accuracy. Checking it multiple times on the same trailer did result in the same measurement, so that's a good sign on the gauge used!

by:

Well made, easy to use. I appreciate being able to measure tongue weight at the working height of the coupler, and not need to block up the scale to get there.

by:

It is easy to use. Good adjustability. Easily found out my loaded tongue weight.

by:

I like that you don’t need a floor jack or a bunch of wood blocks like you need with those stubby models. EZ to use.

by:

Have two rv's and a dump trailer. This item should insure me that I am towing safely.

Great speedy service.

  • Will A 6,000 lb Weight Distribution Hitch Work For A 2,000 lb Trailer?
Hey John. The answer to your question really depends on what specific weight distribution (WD) system you are using. Many WD systems specify a tongue weight range that the hitch will work with. For example, the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BXW0750 will work on trailers with a tongue weight between 550 and 750 lbs. Hello Bob; considering the fact that the # BXW0550 has a gross towing weight rating of 5,500 lbs you're overrated right from the start. Also, the tongue weight range is 350-550 lbs so I'm sure that is well over considering the fact that tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the trailer weight. The good news is you can upgrade the system by getting higher rated spring bars. If I had to guess based on the dry weight and GVWR I would say the # BXW4007 is the right choice for your trailer....

The GVWR is the max that the vehicle can safely weigh and this number includes things like a full tank of gas, a full load of passengers, and some cargo so any weight that you're...
