Can Big Truck Big RV Tongue Weight Scale be Used on Wood Block

Updated 03/16/2026 | Published 03/06/2026

Question:

My travel trailer coupler height is approximately 26” on level ground. Is it ok to put the BTBRV tongue weight scale on a suitable platform or does the scale need to sit on the ground?

Hey Ed, welcome back! As long as the Big Truck Big RV Tongue Weight Scale # BTBRV004 is on a hard flat surface that does not flex it will work just fine. So you can use a spacer of some type to take up the extra space needed with this and it will work great. That's a pretty tall coupler height, is trailer lifted?

I forgot I was on a little bit of a slope when I measured. It is probably closer to 24 to 25 inches level. No, it is not lifted. Standard Rockwood Mini Lite.

@EdE Right on! That's still taller than I would have anticipated but thats fine. The max height of the scale is 17-1/4 inches so you still would need a block of some type.

Just be sure the tongue is as close to being level as possible. Otherwise the downward force is being split between a vertical force and a slight forward or back force. In most cases the readings should be comparable provided you are within about ten degrees of being level. Otherwise it could be statistically significant. Blocks can certainly be used and are needed if the height of the jack doesn’t equal the height of the tongue when level. The manufacturer also states that you cannot compress the scale even with full body weight as any deviation from pure vertical on the scale will either prevent a reading or give an inaccurate reading.

This isn't rocket science. As long as you can support the entire weight of the trailer tongue with the spring that is in the scale it will read the weight it is supporting. So if your jack base is off the ground or blocking and has nothing but air between it and any ground support and the only thing supporting the trailer tongue is the scale, it's working.

I bought this scale and tried it out. My trailer tongue is also high so I typically have 2 4x4 wood blocks under the tongue jack. The scale fits under the tongue with one 4c4 wood block. Now I don’t have to drive many miles to get to a CAT scale to get my tongue weight.

Hi Ed, We have an Imagine by Grand Design 27'. We just put raiser blocks on the ground to raise up the Tongue Jack. It works just fine for us. It is a great relief to know that our tongue weight is within the safe weights for not only our trailer but also for proper weight on our vehicle tires. You won't be disappointed with the Tongue Jack.

Hi Ed, Just tto add my 1.5 cents. I have a Rockwood Geo Pro 21'. The scale worked fine sitting on the same kind of riser that I use for the tongue jack. I'm very happy with it. Enjoy! Dave
