Sizes vary—some European style entry locks fit a 7-7/16" tall x 3-3/4" wide cutout and need a minimum door thickness of 1-1/2", while certain baggage door slam latches fit 1-1/4" thick doors. Remove 4 screws to measure your opening before you swap parts.
Deadbolts are available and are a nice bonus on some entry locks. Keyless options may not be offered for certain European style locks that use a unique tall, narrow cutout, and a standard latch may not fit that opening. Verify your door style and cutout before planning a switch.
They can. A 45° latch can require a catch made for that angle—some straight-on catches needed modification to match. Dry-fit the latch and catch first and check the angle alignment. If the catch doesn't match, adjust the catch or choose parts designed to work together.
Measure the opening before you buy. It's easy to remove 4 screws to measure your cutout, and some new locks can be larger than the old one. Check door thickness too—thin doors (like 5/8") may need a small tab adjustment. Make sure there's no clearance issue with the screen door.
Many swap in as direct replacements. If only the cam wheel failed, you might reuse the cam. Some latches fit 1-1/4" thick doors and may need a mounting plate, so confirm thickness and whether you have that plate. Test-fit to ensure smooth latch action before final tightening.
Pick heavier-duty steel when you need more strength, like on cargo trailer ramps or doors in strong wind. They can be drilled and lagged into plywood and felt sturdier than originals that pulled out. On lighter RV doors, operate near the connection point to avoid door damage and check the mounting surface.
