Question:
Replacing a damaged fender. The original fender looks like a strip of butyl tape seal was used between alum jeep style fender and trailer body when installed. Any recommendations on using this tape, width and thickness? Or other product for sealing around trailer and fender gap?

Hello Bruce,
Thanks for writing in!
Using butyl tape between the trailer body and the Single Axle Jeep Style Trailer Fender - Diamond Plate Aluminum - 13" to 15" # HP96VR is exactly the route I would go. It stays flexible, creates an excellent weatherproof gasket, and does a great job of keeping water from working its way between the fender and the trailer body.
I recommend the LaSalle Bristol Butyl Tape for XTRM RV Roof Membranes - 30' x 3/4" - Gray # 344270341410-1. The 3/4" width works well for this application, and once you tighten the mounting hardware, the tape compresses to fill small gaps and create a long-lasting seal.
After the fender is mounted and everything is tightened down, you can simply trim away any excess butyl that squeezes out for a clean, finished look.
What kind of trailer are you replacing the fender on?

My utility trailer did not have any butyl tape already there, so didn't even think about using it when mounting these new ones. But having just used the tape when replacing the top vent of the trailer, I'm sure that would work ok. What I did was to get a good flush mount between fender and trailer body, then bolted them on, and finished on top with 50-year clear silicone seal so there was good waterproofing and drainage of any water that comes along. So far, no leakage or separation of seal to fender/trailer body despite the vibration one would expect bouncing down the road, including dirt roads.
