Hitch for 2017 Keystone Montana 3950BR Carrying Bike Rack

Can you recomment a hitch for the rear of a 2017 Keystone Montana 3950BR fifth wheel trailer? I want to carry our two e-bikes on it. I have the Curt 2 bike e-bike carrier that I purchased from eTrailer.

Hey Arlen, welcome back! For a hitch I recommend the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch # 13703. This Class III hitch fits 22" to 72" wide trailer frames and can be bolted or welded on for installation. It has a max tongue weight of 350 lbs which will be more than enough for the e-bikes and bike rack.

It looks like you have the Curt Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes # C89JR. Unfortunately, this bike rack is not rated for 5th wheels so I don't recommend using it with your setup. For a bike rack designed for e-bikes that is rated for a 5th wheel I recommend the Hollywood Racks RV Rider Bike Rack # HLY64FR. Then I would try to sell the Curt to recoup some of the cost.

Thank you. I thought the Curt e-bike rack was rated for fifth wheel use? What makes it not acceptable to use on a fifth wheel trailer?

@ArlenG the rating comes from Curt. Through testing or however it is built they determined it is not compatible. There are extra forces on the back of trailers so you really don't want to risk it and lose your bike rack and bikes out on the road. They specifically list it under Caution in the installation instructions which reads "Do not install this product on a trailer or towed vehicle." That includes travel trailers and 5th wheels.

On your recommendation, I ordered the Curt hitch for the rear of my Montana fifth wheel. This trailer has the square bumper welded to blocks that are welded to the frame. Is it acceptable to mount the end plates for the hitch to those blocks? The size works ok. I don’t see anyway to bolt the plates directly to the frame as there are structural supports up in there for the fresh water tank. Also, if I move the plates up to the frame, the receiver of the hitch will be in the middle of the square bumper. I have pictures but don’t see a way to attach to this response. Since I also ordered the acceptable Hollywood bike rack for the rear of a fifth wheel, can I just use a bolt on hitch on the square bumper? Can I return this Curt hitch if I can’t use it?

@ArlenG the Curt # 13703 really does need to be mounted to the trailer's frame, not just the square bumper. If those welded blocks are actually structural frame extensions that are fully welded to the frame rails, then they may be suitable mounting points. If they're only there to support the bumper, I would not recommend using them to carry the additional weight of a hitch, bike rack, and two e-bikes. It's also pretty common for a universal trailer hitch like this to require some fabrication to fit a particular trailer. While the #13703 is designed to fit a wide range of frame widths, things like holding tanks, crossmembers, or bumper supports can mean the mounting plates need to be repositioned or the hitch welded on instead of bolted. A qualified fabrication or trailer shop should be able to evaluate the best way to mount it safely without compromising the trailer's frame. I also would not recommend switching to a bolt-on bumper-mounted hitch. The Hollywood Racks RV Rider # HLY64FR is not compatible with bumper-mounted hitch adapters, so that wouldn't be a viable solution. Even without that restriction, you're probably over the capacity of the bumper with the hitch, bike rack, and 2 e-bikes loaded back there.
