Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Fastway e2 Sway Control

The two points of sway control within the e2 are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight-distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system.

The direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the e2 system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the e2 uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway-control system.

Video Transcript for Fastway Weight Distribution - WD With Sway Control - FA92-00-0450 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Fast Way E2 Weight Distribution System, with two point sway control. Now, weight distribution is designed to evenly distribute weight over the axles of your tow vehicle, and your trailer. It's going to offer better stability and control while driving. It creates a more level ride for both the tow vehicle and the trailer. This particular system features two-point sway control. It's integrated into the unit, which sway control is designed to limit that side-to-side movement.

It's designed to control sway. So, these brackets are designed to keep the spring bars in place for a rigid system that holds a trailer inline at all times, features the steel-on-steel friction which helps minimize sway caused by winds or sudden maneuvers, and as you can see, this system does not utilize lift chains. So this design really helps eliminate any unwanted movement. The unique design makes this system compatible with surge type break actuators. You can back up your vehicle and trailer with this connected, there's no need to disconnect before going into reverse. The trunnion spring bars are designed to flex for a nice controlled even ride.

These are no-drill clamp on brackets that can be adjusted along the trailer frame, which is great for accommodating frame mounted items such as gas tanks, battery boxes, tool boxes or frame mounted generators. When it comes to the head assembly, which is this unit here, you can tilt the head as needed. The desired tilt is achieved using the traditional washer design. So, you add or remove washers from the spacer rivet to tilt the head up or down, and then there is an installation location back here, for that spacer rivet, and then at the bottom there is a set bolt, so if there's any type of give or slack in the system, you can tighten that set bolt to try to remove and eliminate any of that. We're looking at a durable steel construction. It's all powder coated, so it's designed to resist rust and corrosion, it'll last a long time. It also comes with your snap up lever.

This is designed to ease installation by reducing lifting required by the trailer jack. So this really helps get the bars in place on the lift brackets when you're setting up. Also, really helpful for when you're disconnecting. This part number comes with your head assembly, which is this right here. It comes with the adjustable shank, comes with your spring bars, sway control brackets, lift handle. Comes with your pin and clip to secure the unit inside of your hitch, and it comes with all your necessary hardware.

What you will need is you will need a hitch ball, so that is sold separately, they're available at etrailer.com. This head assembly has a ball hole that will accept a one inch diameter shank on the hitch ball. Maximum tunnel weight capacity for this unit is 450 pounds, gross towing weight capacity is 4,500 pounds. This is designed to fit inside of a two inch by two inch trailer hitch receiver that's rated for use of weight distribution. The brackets will fit trailer frame heights all the way up to six inches tall. Now, the shank length . A few measurements, I just want to mention for you real quick. I took a measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the adjustment holes. Got a measurement of eight inches from the center of the hitch pinhole to the very front of the Shank, measures nine inches, and the overall length from back of shank to front of shank is 12 inches. This can be used in either the rise or drop positions. In the rise position, with the head assembly at the highest setting, you're going to have a rise of around five to six inches. With it in the drop position with the head assembly at the lowest setting, you're going to have a maximum drop of around two inches, and that's from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch, down to the top of the ball platform with everything straight and in line. No tilt applied to those measurements. Those holes on that shank are spaced apart on center by an inch and a quarter, so that is your incremental height adjustment. That's going to do it for today's look at the Fast Way E2 Weight Distribution System with the two-point integrated sway control.

Good product. Works as advertised. The weld radius on one side is not too clean, making it difficult to secure the riser bar with the 90-deg pin. 364255

Installed on a T&B camper trailer being towed by a Mazda CX5. Is a fairly straightforward install as long as you follow the well-written directions carefully. Being slow and methodical it took me all afternoon. On a test drive it seems to tow well. Note that the removable hitch is fairly heavy (weight-wise) and requires some creativity on where and how to store it when not in use (I keep it in the trailer or the house, not in the car). 572114

Just finished installation of the Fastway WDH on my Rpod 180 (approx 3200 lbs loaded) with my TV, Lexus RX350! I had a mechanic/camping friend do the installation. Pleased with everything so far - did a test ride and definitely feel (I think) a difference, TV feels more solid, not as bouncy and had zero sway when the tractor trailer passed us on the highway. I had numerous people in the camping/RV industry tell me I don't need a WDH but after extensive research, I think this will make a huge difference on towability and safety. I'm going to finish my analysis with another trip to the scales. Customer support at etrailer was awesome, great service, answered questions and very helpful. 563509

I have used this hitch on two different tow vehicles with excellent results for the last year. The hitch was very easy to install on a enclosed utility trailer by following the manufacturer's directions and viewing the etrailer videos. I have used this hitch on both vehicles with widely varying loads on the trailer. The adjustments are very easy to make. I use a tongue weight scale to make sure the load is distributed such that I get a tongue weight that is 10% to 15% of the trailer weight. My average trip with this hitch and the trailer is 900 miles. 608234

I have had this hitch/weight distribution setup for a year now and I am very pleased. The trailer hookup is a simple process and the trailer is level. The built in sway control seems to be doing the trick, no issues. I am pulling a 29' Nash 25c with a GVW of 8500 lbs with a 2012 Tundra Crewmax. 605486

The solution to dangerous issues. This system resolved many of my towing issues. I tow a food trailer. The hitch sagged and the lowered hitch raised the front end of my SUV. I also experienced sway and buffeting when tractor-trailers passed. Windy, wet nights and big trucks were white-knuckle drives. NO MORE. Nobody does it better than etrailer! They answer their phone! They are truly knowledgeable about their products and care about their clients. My first call directed me to my precise options. I ordered it on-line and it arrived a day ahead of schedule. I watched their exceptional installation video three times before attempting installation. This is what sets ET apart. They did not have one video - they had two - one for a truck and one for an SUV / VAN. What was not covered in the videos was only a call away. PAY ATTENTION HERE: The rig uses a set of stacked-washers to adjust the "angle" of the hitch ball. The more washers you use - the greater the angle and the higher the tension of the torsion bar. If you begin with too many washers, you may find that after you use the provided torsion bar installer (a variant on a crow-bar) to install your torsion/control-bars. YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET THE BARS BACK OFF! That was my case. And if you cannot get the bars off - you cannot remove the tow vehicle. I had no idea how to release all of that pressure without potentially hurting myself. Ugh. ONE CALL - THAT'S ALL! A quick call to ET. The rep understood my problem but he also understood that mine was a dangerous issue and sought additional help internally. He came back with "...this is going to sound odd but trust me. Chock your wheels. Raise your tow vehicle from the center of the tow bar until you raise your rear wheels off of the ground and until you can move the bars manually (a light tap with a hammer is a good indicator as to whether you have relieved enough pressure by raising the tow vehicle). When you can swing the bars manually - swing them out and away from the trailer and if you swing them far enough toward the tow vehicle, they will simply fall out of their socket. (There is also a release tab you can pull out - but I prefer this method.) It WORKED! Adjusting this type of system can be an arduous task that is well worth the effort and no company does a better job of selling, educating and servicing than ET. My local tow shop wanted to install a "chain" system without sway control and when I asked him what he thought of the "bar" systems - he said, "...hmm, I've never seen those before". Go with the experts and your own mechanical expertise. ET has your back. 593977

Review from a similar Fastway e2 in Weight Distribution

The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution hitch has been excellent for towing my 5000lb travel trailer, and was a good deal here on etrailer.com. The 2 way sway control keeps everything steady, and is the best I have ever used in my many years of towing travel trailers. The only problem I have experienced with it, is that when pulling out of Gas Stations or anywhere there is a small curb or gutter, it tends to drag. This usually causes the sway bar mount to get knocked out of alignment. 453910

Got the hitch in 2 days, installed it via instructions and a few videos. No problems, works as advertised, usual awesomeness from etrailer. Installed it on a 5K pound 27 foot travel trailer, hitch weight 550... towing with '07 Tundra, 5.7L, pulls like a champ. 493707

I like it very much. Easy to install, but you may need a torque wrench to get the 250 ft-lbs required to tighten the head bolts. I used my weight and math to do it. Worked well. The ability to change the height of the ball when you change trailers or trucks it the strong suit for this hitch and it comes will the ball attached and torqued. Great value. 566751

I will update this review after I have installed the Weight Distribution system on my unit, but I wanted to give a special thank you to Vanessa who did an outstanding job of getting me a part that had broken out of the box during shipment. She did a great job of keeping me up to date on the status of my missing item. The item was very heavy and the packing it came in today was outstanding. Many thanks. 518453

This system works great for me. I have a Nissan Frontier and 21 foot TT. If you install this yourself make sure you watch every video and then follow the written instructions provided. You cant go wrong. This leveled my truck out and planted the front wheels firmly back on the ground. One word of warning. If you are parking your trailer on an incline and the truck and trailer aren't level move to a level spot, remove the bars and then back it in. Just makes getting the bars off easier. 570572

Our friends (who had a large Roo trailer) recommended that we get he Equalizer E2 trunnion hitch for our 26-foot Jayco mated to our F150. Everything has been great. It is easy to hook up and disconnect, and when pulling, the trailer is stable and we have had no swaying of any kind. Our [retailer] tech installed it, and we are totally happy with it. 348753

Very helpful salespeople. Products are priced competitively. Folks in the packaging department need to take more care - my hitch receiver had the powdercoat rubbed off in (3) places and the load leveling hitch destroyed the styrofoam packaging due to the heavy weight of the components. HEY, BUY SOME BUBBLE WRAP! It's cheap and does the trick. 569837

Product is good - heavy. Instruction book leaves something to desire. Makes reference to Spacer Washers but has no picture of where they go. Not enough pics to understand all parts. Have not used product yet but seems very high quality. BTW delivery was awful! Came 5 days after it was stated to be delivered. Big brown co did awful job. Too bad etrailer can't use FX. They are soooo much better. I won't order anything else because of delivery mess. 512391

The washers act as a fine adjustment for the tilt of the weight distribution head. The more washers added to the stud, the further rearward the head tilts. If you use the provided link, you can see an install/set-up video that will walk you through the process.

All though I have hardly gotten to use the hitch I am very please with it. I have installed it on my 2013 1985 Lance TT being pulled with a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. e-trialer has been great the customer rep handling my order expedited my order, without being asked, and the hitch was delivered to me in Oregon in 6 days, just in time for the delivery of my new TT. etrailer had the lowest price for the hitch and thanks to the free shipping it came in under anyone else. Thank you keep up the great work. Chuck 68518

The Fastway E2 hitch works great and was really easy to assemble. Just had a hard time getting the ball and nut on because there isn't a socket that fits in the location the nut sits. So we put a pipe wrench on the ball side. Other then that, this hitch is built well and you can back up with it all hooked up, it bolts on easily and serves 2 purposes. The lady from etrailer.com that I spoke with was the best of all. She has the know how and experience to get me set up with the proper size hitch. Or I would have done the bigger is better thing. 236657

I am very happy with my transaction with this company. From start to finish I was treated with respect and was helped by some very knowing people. I have not used my hitch yet but it appears to be a quality product. It should be packaged a little better for shipping because it appears to have broken open during shipping and was taped up . However there was nothing missing. Very satisfied customer. 406527

Not my first experience with etrailer. Have purchased 4 hitches from them and every experience has been great. Just bought the Fastway e2 10,000 lb hitch to pull a new travel trailer and picked up the trailer today. I was somewhat concerned about picking it up today because the wind has been blowing at 15 to 20 mph. If you have pulled a TT in wind you know how it can cause unnerving sway. I have had white knuckle experiences with my other TT and hitch but this was not my experience today. There was only 1 time which I felt the sway from the wind on the way home and that was not significant. I believe I purchased a good hitch and I know I bought it from the right dealer. 496556

The hitch was more difficult to install than anticipated. We needed to purchase a larger than typical wrench to get the job done. What took most of the time was the adjustments rather than the physical attaching. Make sure you are careful with your measurements! Overall I am very pleased with the product. It definitely helps produce a smoother ride. 381310

Works great, setup was easy and the stability it added was awesome. The campers has twice the service area as the tow vehicle, and even in crazy hurricane season winds in Florida I didn't sway in the least. The unit itself is an awkward shape and I had a hard time installing the ball. There is not enough room to use a standard socket to tighten the nut, and using wrenches was time consuming and aggravating so one star for that. Once your past that hurdle though it is a great product and recommended. 484610

I bought this product to pull our 20' Winnebago Micro Minnie with our Honda Pilot. It works great and we have never had a bit of sway with it. I especially like the fact that I can back the trailer without removing the anti-sway control which would be a big headache in most situations. 561425

Review from a similar Fastway e2 in Weight Distribution

The Fastway Weight Distribution Hitch with anti-sway works great. I installed Firestone Airlifts to my suspension as well. Very stable ride. The combination of air bags and WDH makes us feel a bit safer as well. It's fun to see folks on the highway who got it right, as opposed to those that didn't. This hitch may be load rated a little high for my set-up though - not much flex to the 8,000 lb. bars. We're pulling a 2003 Casita Spirit Deluxe with 2001 Isuzu Rodeo with only 205 HP...We are taking a two week trip next month. After, we will purchase a Toyota TRD Off Road Premium for the next trip - a little more HP and modern electronics! I think the Fastway the best setup for the money. We could have sprung for the Anderson system, but, why? This one does what is supposed to do. The only thing I would like to see improved is the noise it makes when turning corners sometimes. The bars make a pretty loud screeching sound. Like a large metal cattle gate with rusty hinges opening real slow. Any ideas on how to quiet this down? We're not supposed to lubricate. That would take the safety out of the anti-sway. Thank you Lisa D. for all of the time spent with me figuring out the best options for our needs. 517499

Comments

The noise you hear is caused by the metal-on-metal friction caused by the downward force applied to the frame brackets by the spring bars. This friction is what provides the sway control. As you mentioned, lubricating the contact points would completely defeat the sway control feature. Unfortunately, the noise is just the nature of the beast with this type of product.

Item was suggest to me but, the etrailer salesperson never bothered to explain the I needed a thin wall 1-7/8" socket to install the hitch ball. This socket costs an extra $50 from etrailer and more from others. I had to modify my socket (which was expensive but not $50+) in order to install the ball. Hitch has been a great help with sway and bounce. Its made towing a lot more comfortable. I only wish I was told about the tight fit for the hitch ball nut access

The only reason I am giving this four stars instead of five is the adjustability of the hitch. For my vehicle, the hitch was either way too high or low, so there is a "watch out" here. I chose for it to be lower, without getting a specially drilled bracket (weekend warrior hauling doesn't justify that). In general, it was extremely easy to install and the instructions were straight forward however they were contradictory with height measurements. First it talks about wanting to put the tow vehicle height halfway between the unhitched height and the initial hitched height, but then it states to put the final heights back to the original measurements. Being an engineer and thinking about it, as well as looking at instructions from other manufacturers, you want the tow vehicle to be as close to the unhitched height as possible. You do NOT want to overcompensate, though. Once I figured that out, it was a piece of cake to set up. Again, easy to install, easy to hitch, easy to set and unset the torsion bars (using your tongue jack to take the weight off helps a bunch), great sway control, and great weight distribution (if it is set up well). Make certain you always keep the trunion pivot pins well greased to avoid wear, so buy a tube or two of grease and keep it with the hitch. 525696

Last weekend we took a 150 mile trip with our older nomad camper. The e2 weight Distribution w/2 point sway control worked like a charm. Even had a cross wind at around 25-30mph and there was little to no sway. I took a bad picture of the hitch set up, but my pull was with a 2000 chev. pickup 1500 , 4 wheeler in the back end of pickup ,and trailer loaded to around 7,000 lbs. I will and have told many people about this hitch set-up already. Excellent job etrailer. 86110

Everything was delivered on time and in good condition. It was a few days before I tried to install it. I did have to move my brake switch as this was the only open place on the trailer frame. Using the start point for the install I was unable to get the bars in place. I had to move them to the lowest position to start my adjustments. I have yet to road test to see how close I am at this point. 553310

Good Product and great service. The order was received quickly and exactly as ordered. The hitch installation was well documented and was easily completed (after purchasing a few larger wrenches). Using this on a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee pulling a 2horse bumper pull trailer. So far, it seems to make the trailer more stable, although I have yet to haul it with both horses loaded. 229253

This hitch set up was perfect for us. We have a small 21 foot travel trailer and pull it with a standard 2013 1500 Silverado. The hitch did its job lifting the rear of the truck to level. Great sway control. I highly recommend it. When we eventually go with a bigger set up, I WILL be buying this brand again. 508769

The hitch was relatively easy to install once the ball got rolling, about 2 hours or so. Makes towing a breeze! Increased my connection clearance by 3"! Best part was the customer service provided by etrailer. Blew me away with attentive service due to a supply issue and was resolved with ease! I'd recommend this product to any towing person and that they purchase through etrailer. 263655

Has worked real good for a first time puller. Self installed, with a little help from the pros, but easy hook up and go. Feels real nice on the road, but not real familiar with pulling a trailer without one. Much better to buy and install than the fortune the dealer wanted to charge me. 334506

I never had any problems with this WD System. Everything went together rather smoothly and it seems to work as intended. It is very heavy, received the product in the mail in it's original box which was tore up pretty good. They should have packaged the hitch better, like inside of another box at least. It seems the paint will eventually come off pretty easily , so touching it up with some spray paint will be in order to maintain the hitch from rusting. 250777

Ive only used the hitch a couple of times within a year of owning it. The tool that has the hook on the end that is used to lift the stabilizing bars onto the hitch bends way to easy, it needs to be made out of stronger or thicker medal. One of the metal latches that hold the stabilizer bars in the socket broke off. The weld that held the pin that holds the latch broke off. But other then that it still works.

The pole tongue adapter and Fastway E2 hitch work great together. Instructions are straight forward and easy to follow. I put it together following the basic setup and it didn't need much adjustment. I could recommend this setup for anyone. Our ice castle has a hydralic frame which you can use to hook the spring bars up. It greatly improved the ride, steering and handling of the rig. I also have a set of Air Lift 1000 in the rear (previously ordered from etrailer). They work great in conjunction with this hitch. And further add adjustability to the setup. 421007

I like the hitch very well made good quality product. The instal was easy good directions . Test drive trailer handled very good big improvement. I felt a little to much weight on the truck. Removed one washer spacer. Test drove again it still handled well. I will be taking first long trip next week will know better then. Thank you for good service. Leo T. 55015

E2 weight distribution/anti-sway system arrived right on time. The PET was easy to follow and the unit was easy to install. I had to make some slight modifications to my travel trailer to make it fit. I followed the step by step instructions to adjust the unit and just pulled it to the lake camp sight. It performed incredibly well, and the difference before and after is unbelievable! 504341

This is a review of etrailer.com not the towing system. I ordered several items online Sunday morning, then realized I needed to change one. Their customer service starts at noon on Sundays. About 11 am I received an email stating that my order had been shipped - on a Sunday! An hour later I was on the phone with one of their "customer service" reps. Although she admitted that my order had not yet actually left the premises, she refused to have someone from shipping pull the order back in and make a change. Finally left me on hold until the line disconnected. And this is on a 2-day shipping that cost about $30 extra! After exhausting all possible options. I called back and had basically the same conversation wth another rep. I told them I was going to call the bank and file a dispute, and might even keep the order for spite. A few days later i received an email with a return shipping label. When the order arrived, I printed the label. It was for a 2 lb package. This order was 2 boxes and weighed almost 100 lbs! I refusef the order and am still waiting to hear from their customer service. Bank reversed the charges. etrailer is the WORST company I ever dealt with 399541

This hitch has been amazing! So far I have put over 2500 miles on it pulling a 6000+ lb trailer with my F150 and I have been incredibly satisfied. The hitch is very easy to hook up and disconnect and the ride is great. This distributes the weight perfectly and the ride is great. I like this way better than the chain style WDH that I used on my last camper. I particularly like that this unit handles sway control without an additional friction device. I have had zero problems with sway, bouncing, or ride control since installing this. I highly recommend it! 411176

Over 6600 miles on this hitch, and not a problem! We have driven from Michigan to Niagara Falls, Florida, and countless places closer to home. I have hooked/unhooked this hitch 50+ times and it is extremely quick and easy. I am still highly satisfied with this hitch and recommend it to everybody I know who is getting started.

  • Difference Between 2-Point and 4-Point Sway Control on Weight Distribution Systems
  • The Equil-i-zer Weight Distribution with 4-Point Sway Control, like # EQ37041ET, differs from the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution with 2-Point Sway Control # FA92-00-0450, because it does utilize 2 more points of steel-on-steel friction at the head of the system. The 4-point system uses a tight connection with the trunnion bars at the head, in a way sandwiching the bar and utilizing that friction to keep it from moving as freely. The Fastway e2 2-point system has a slight gap between the...

  • Fastway Weight Distribution Recommendation for 3,500 lb Trailer
  • Thanks for providing as much information on your setup as you did. That makes my job very easy! So your trailer at it's heaviest would be 3,500 lbs which would mean the tongue weight could range from 350 to 525 lbs. The part # FA92-00-0450 is most likely going to be not rated high enough as you also have to factor the weight of cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle as tongue weight too. The part # FA92-00-0600 would be a better option as it has a tongue weight limit of 600 lbs...

  • Weight Distribution for a 2011 Toyota Highlander and 2,800 Pound Trailer

I have linked a help article on determining tongue weight for you. • Pole Tongue Adapter for Boat Trailer to Allow Use of Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System
  • Boat trailers that have a straight pole tongue (rather than an a-frame) can be used with WD systems by adding a pole tongue adapter that provides the necessary mounting points for the spring bar brackets. Equal-I-zer offers one made specifically for their systems, part # EQ95-01-5950. This will bolt onto trailer tongues up to 5-inches wide and up to 5-1/2-inches tall. You can use this so long as your trailer does NOT have a folding/hinged tongue.
