Can I Use a Weight Distribution System w/a 2015 Subaru Forester?

Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 04/09/2025

Question:

Not sure how to proceed. We will be pulling an 1100lb utility trailer 3800 miles, mostly interstate, with our 2015 Subaru Forester. Around town, this rig works great on the simple 2inch ball hitch, but at long distances and higher sustained speeds Id like to install a proactiveinch anti-sway system. It seems only WDH systems are proactive...and Subarus manual advises against WDH systems! Any thoughts on going against Subies advice? Ive been considering Fastways E2. Any advice on ing the best reactiveinch non-WDH anti-sway system? Thanks

Hey Robert! I checked out your 2015 Subaru Forester's owners manual. I would definitely follow its recommendations if you have the factory hitch or the Curt item # C13144. It looks like its the type of hitch that's excluding a weight distribution system as an option. The only hitch that works with one is the Draw-Tite item # 75876.

If you have the Draw-Tite Hitch item # 75876, then the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control item # FA92-00-0450 will work great for you.

If you do not have the Draw-Tite Hitch item # 75876, the best way for you to help reduce/prevent sway is by using the Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control item # 335TSC-1000. This will require your trailer to have electric brakes as it uses the brakes independently to prevent sway from occurring.

If your smaller 1,100 lbs trailer does not have electric brakes the only option is to use the Curt Friction Sway Control for Weight Distribution Systems item # 17200 with ball mount adapter bracket item # RP26003. The ball mount adapter attaches to fixed ball mounts as shown in the picture below.

If you have any additional questions go ahead and throw them into the comment box below.

Hey Robert, how did things turn out with your Forester and trailer setup on that long trip? Did the sway control option you chose help keep things steady at highway speeds? Your update could make it easier for others towing similar lightweight trailers.
