SumoSprings Or Weight Distribution System For Towing A Casita Trailer With A 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

Updated 01/02/2026 | Published 01/01/2026

Question:

Hi etrailer, I am about to purchase a 2500 lb casita trailer to pull behind my 2023 Toyota 4runner 4wd which has about a 1 inch body lift and stock suspension I believe. I am considering getting the blue sumosprings to help reduce any rear droop I might experience- and or do a weight distribution hitch for towing safety . What kind of set up would you recommend? Thank you

Hi Justin!

The SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs - Rear Axle # SS68DR would be a very good option for your 2023 Toyota 4Runner. They will provide up to 1,400 pounds of support (at 50% compression) and I think that would be plenty for your relatively light Casita trailer. They also won't mess with your unloaded ride much due to their lower capacity than other options.

With your Casita trailer being on the light side, I would actually recommend a weight distribution system more for the sway control. The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Trunnion - 4,500 lbs GTW, 450 lbs TW # FA92-00-0450 will actually handle both aspects very well, but I would honestly try towing with just the SumoSpring before grabbing a weight distribution system as you may not need one. If you are getting a lot of sway or squat though, you can absolutely use both systems together.

One thing to watch out for is the propane tanks on the front of trailers, like your Casita. This weight distribution system needs the frame brackets to mount between 27" and 30" from the center of the coupler (see included image) and propane tanks can get in the way sometimes. Not always, but definitely double check.

What's your first trip you have planned?

@JustinF That's the best way to do it. You never know how the vehicle will handle the camper until you try it out. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with and have fun out there! Happy new year!!!
