Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Serrated Washer System

Unique Features of Reese Trunnion-Bar Weight Distribution

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

The trunnion spring bars of this system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. In addition, these specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control (sold separately).

Excellent product and excellent service! I pull a Arctic Fox 32A with a 2010 Chev Silverado 2500 HD with a Duramax. The tongue weight is 1430 pounds. I upgraded from a Husky 12,000 pound hitch to the Reese 17000 pound RP66006 weight distribution hitch, and the RP54977 Shank. There has been a remarkable improvement in the ride, much smoother, and no bouncing. And , it is level. I can't say enough about the great service from Katie D at etrailer

I am extremely happy with the Reese hitch I bought. And, I have to say, the after sales service from etrailer is outstanding. Not many businesses would follow up a year after the sale.

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a 10,000 lb Trailer
The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use. Since tongue weight is typically...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 1,175 lb Dry Tongue Weight Trailer
With your tongue weight at 1,175 lbs when loaded, you also need to account for any cargo weight behind the rear axle as well to get the total tongue weight rating. I've attached an article to assist. You are correct that your current system is underrated for your application. My recommendation is the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37140ET rated for total tongue weights between 1,000 and 1,400 lbs. You want your total tongue weight to fall in the...

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a 2011 GMC Sierra 2500HD and Jayco Eagle Trailer
When choosing a weight distribution system, you will need one that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight when loaded and ready to tow. Anything loaded in the tow vehicle that is behind the rear axle will also count towards tongue weight. Tongue weight is usually between 10 and 15 percent of the gross trailer weight, loaded and ready to tow. With an unloaded weight of 10,200 pounds, that would be between 1,020 pounds and 1,530 pounds. • Weight Distribution for Dump Trailer with 8 Inch Tall I-Beam Frame
I do have a great option for you but a Reese system is not going to be the best choice in this case. You will need to box the trailer frame where the weight distribution brackets will go by having steel plates welded on. What you can use is an Equal-I-zer system, # EQ37120ET as an example, and then add 2 outer link plates, # EQ90-02-5378, sold in quantities of 1, and 2 inner link plates, # EQ90-02-5208, also sold in quantities of 1. That would allow you to use the system on an 8 inch...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution for a 14K Dump Trailer with 8 Tall I-Beam Frame
The only viable solution for your application is the Reese Titan Weight Distribution (WD) # RP66006. This has a max weight rating of 17,000 lbs with a tongue weight (TW) range of 1,000 lbs - 1,700 lbs so you do need to make sure the loaded TW of your trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle doesn't exceed this weight. This WD system will fit with your 8" tall I-beam frame but you will need a professional welder to place boxed in areas about 5-1/2" long...

You'd want to go with a higher rated weight distribution system that does not have an included shank so that you can go with a different shank that has a higher amount of drop. For example the Reese Titan weight distribution system part # RP66006 has a tongue weight range of 1,000 to 1,700 lbs and with it you could use the Titan drop shank # RP54977 which can do up to 5-3/4 inches of drop.

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Forest River Rockwood V 2715VS
I looked up some specs on the Forest River Rockwood V 2715VS and found that it would have a tongue weight of around 1,100 lbs and it has a V-nose. Before I get into the best weight distribution system for your setup you should note that they all make some noise. I will try to point you towards one that isn't quite as noisy. So for the system itself you'll want the Titan by Reese part # RP66006 which has a tongue weight range of 1,000 lbs to 1,700 lbs. You'll need a matching shank that...

I think a fair assessment would be around 1,500 lb based on the numbers you mentioned. It does look like your truck isn't sagging though which is a pretty good sign. For a 1,500 lb tongue weight we have the Reese Titan kit part # RP66006 which has a tongue weight range of 1,000 to 1,700 lb tongue weight range. Yes, you can add the Reese Dual Cam High-Performance Sway Control for Steel Trailer Frames # RP26002 to your # RP66131 weight distribution hitch. When you added the 1,700 lb spring bars you basically turned it into the # RP66006. Adding the # RP26002 to either of these will turn them into the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control. If your motorhome does indeed have a hitch with a 10000 lb capacity, it means that the hitch is capable of towing a trailer weighing up to 10000 lbs. To confirm this, the hitch should have a sticker or plate on it listing the capacities. The tongue weight capacity should also be listed. Tongue weight is the amount of weight that can safely be suspended from the receiver (or the maximum downward force exerted). The hitch might also list a capacity for use with a weight distribution (W/D)...
