Recommended Weight Distribution System for 1,175 lb Dry Tongue Weight Trailer

Question:

Ok last question. How do I get the 2 inch shank vs 2 1/2. Per blue ox site it’s either one but kit comes with 2 1/2 Thank you

With your tongue weight at 1,175 lbs when loaded, you also need to account for any cargo weight behind the rear axle as well to get the total tongue weight rating. I've attached an article to assist. You are correct that your current system is underrated for your application.

My recommendation is the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37140ET rated for total tongue weights between 1,000 and 1,400 lbs. You want your total tongue weight to fall in the middle range of that capacity. This system comes with the hitch ball, but you will need a socket like # ALL643216 to install it.

For even better sway control, I recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar # RP66130 which will work with total tongue weights between 800 and 1500 lbs. This will use hitch ball # C40030 and require a heavy duty shank # RP54970. This is a superior system that won't wear on your brackets like you have pictured just based on design.

I like the Reese but my dry tongue weight is 1175 is 1500 to little. I think I may be looking for more not sure. I was looking at Reese 1700 and the blue ox sway pro I think. What are your thoughts? Im ready to order my next hitch but I need help. Do I get blue ox or the Reese cam hitch.

For your dry tongue weight of 1175 lbs, the loaded tongue weight of your trailer GVWR could get up to 1,676 lbs if you look at the total tongue weight being up to 15% of the GVWR. Based on that, I recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 17,000 lbs GTW, 1,700 lbs TW # RP66075 along with the Reese Titan Weight Dist Shank - 1-1/4" Drop, 5-1/4" Rise - 1,700 lbs TW # RP54976 or drop shank # RP54977 both of which are only compatible with 2-1/2 inch receivers. This system will better control sway with the cam system and will fit total tongue weights between 1,000 lbs and 1,700 lbs. I recommend the Curt Hitch ball # C40085 for this system. This system will have superior sway control based on the dual cam design. The Blue Ox system # BXW2000 is also for 2-1/2 inch trailer hitches only but only compatible with tongue weights between 1,500 and 2,000 lbs. This system may be overrated for your application and could cause a more rigid ride because of that.

I like the answers other than 1 thing I left out. I do have airbags on truck due to the fact I take golf cart in the back along with towing camper. I was not able to do this with the Andersen because I was under rated. Would you still say the Reese over the blue oxe. Also Reese is significantly more money for less weight. I just want this to be my final hitch. Thank you

That is definitely an important bit of information. The golf cart in the back or your truck will definitely push you to the Blue Ox System # BXW2000 which is the highest rated system other than the Torklift that requires dual receivers which would definitely be overkill and a large jump in expense. Based on the information given to this point, the Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW2000 is the best option for you and the Curt hitch ball # C40085 will work well for this system.
