Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and your camper or trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Serrated Washer System

Unique Features of Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese Strait-Line system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

The trunnion spring bars of the Strait-Line system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. These specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control.

Weight Distributing Hitch

Dual-Cam Sway Control

Reese's dual-cam sway-control system stops trailer sway before it begins. This is a significant improvement over traditional friction-style controls, which help to correct sway only after it has already begun. This specially designed system uses unique sliding devices called "cams" to suspend the spring bars of your weight-distribution system. One end of a cam bolts onto your trailer's frame, and the other end attaches to the lift bracket via the lift chain. The rounded, hooked ends of the spring bars then sit in these cams. The controlled placement of the spring bars keeps your system secure while still allowing enough movement for free, easy interaction between your trailer and your tow vehicle.

Dual-Cam Sway Control Turning

During basic, straight-line towing, the cams lock in place and hold the trailer steady by applying constant, consistent pressure to both sides. This keeps the trailer from swaying in crosswinds. When you go into a turn, the cams unlock and slide to allow a controlled, full-radius maneuver. If you swerve suddenly, the cams will give to accommodate the movement while still working to obtain a straight angle, thereby maintaining control of the trailer.

Our family has been using the Reese Dual-Cam sway control (which comes with the Strait-Line WD setup) for over 20 years. The sway control arms, which bolt to the trailer A-frame, have cam arms which ride in the "saddles" on the ends of the WD bars. If set up right on installation, about the only time you would experience enough sway to give you "white knuckles" is when you are driving in a tornado! (& if that happens, GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS!) The Hensley hitch is probably better (have never owned one), but the Reese Strait-Line is close to $2,000 cheaper, and none of our family has ever felt like we had a need for a hitch/sway control setup more expensive or better than the Reese, and most of us pull some really long and heavy conventional travel trailers. High crosswinds will move the entire rig sideways, but the trailer stays centered behind the truck. The "bow wave" of 18-wheelers overtaking us at a high rate of speed on multi-lane highways will push the rear of the trailer sideways as the bow wave passes. But no steering correction is needed. The additional couple of hundred pounds of pressure put on the WD bars when the trailer moves sideways and causes the sway control cams to move out of their "saddles" pushes the sway arm cams right back down into their "saddles" on the end of the WD bars, which, if the hitch was adjusted right on installation, means that the trailer is once again centered directly behind the tow vehicle. The Strait-Line can probably be beat, but we're never going to spend an extra $2000 to find out. If you have any control problems with the Strait-Line, it is either not set up correctly, or the wind is such that you shouldn't be towing anything, anyway. Even a Hensley hitch can't keep the entire combination of truck/trailer from being pushed sideways by very strong winds, nor can a 5th wheel hitch, because I've seen 5th wheels lying on their sides more than once, and during my working career I pulled high-profile or gooseneck heavy equipment trailers all the time. There are times when you just really shouldn't be towing large travel trailers, or any high-profile trailer.

My last strait-line weight distribution kit w/sway was sold with my travel trailer. These with dynamic sway control have made such a difference in many tricky situations, times when I was traveling in ice in a snow storm, or rain storms, I have always felt in good control with this system. Buying the same system again was a no-brainer. E trailer has helped out a lot with the best tech support and has answered so many questions for me. Great group over there.

I bought two 66130 weight dist. and sway sytems one was put on 3/4 diesel and the other on 3/4 gas bought worked great had no problems with installation, only thing I needed was the shim #58207
for the head assy. and shank if you have a gap. Called Sequent
products which is part of reese and drawtite, sent me the shim and

This hitch was well worth the investment. This hitch massively reduced the sway I was experiencing with my 32” Toy Hauler.

2 cross country trips using the hitch on 2 different trailers. Hitch worked perfect on all trips, no worries about trailer fishtailing. This is the only weight distribution hitch I will use.

by:

The entire package is awesome , did as promised and fixed sway of trailer. I am pulling a 33' Weekend Warrior Toy Hauler. The trailer is heavy 11.500 lbs. and has a heavy tongue weight as well.
Air bags on a 3/4 ton Denali diesel and this trailer pulls straight and true. Should I purchase another tag along this will be the hitch I go with again. Researched Hensley and a few other anti-sway hitches in detail and this is what has worked.
A lot to set up for every trip but does as promised and creates a level of safety comfort for me the driver.

by:

It really does the trick in terms of keeping down the camper sway. I can now drive on the interstate with no problems. Before I got this hitch, I just simply couldn't take the constant fighting as the camper swayed from left to right. The noise is not near as much as was advertised. It pops occasionally when making a tight turn but otherwise we just don't notice it much. The installation is worth mentioning. First, I am not fond of installing items like this. However, my wife and I took our time and installed in in a few hours. The instructions were excellent and (of course!) I still found a way to deviate from them which extended the installation time. However, in the end, it was not a terribly difficult job. This is not our first weight distribution hitch, but it will likely be our last.

by:

Works great as long as it is set up correctly. We traded our trailer in on a new one and the dealer did not set it up correctly and the weight distribution bars kept coming off the cams. The noise and shake made me think I hit something. once adjusted all is good. Still a popping noise I need to track down but not creating any issues. I bought this particular one because of the wider tongue weight range it supported which came in handy. Our new trailer has a dry tongue weight of 944 lbs and the previous trailer was 560.

by:

Purchased this hitch to replace my 14k equalizer hoping it would be a little quieter wich it is from the few blocks I have towed with it. Two complaints I have are one it comes with two sets of instructions if you get the dual cam version you want to make sure you start with those instructions and two the hook up brackets that mount to the trailer have verry poor rivets that the bracket hinges on , one was so bad that in the up position I couldn’t get the keeper pin through and had to replace it, I did get a replacement from etrailer and it is way better , pretty sure I will have to replace the other bracket as well as there is a ton of play in its rivots as well but for now I can at least get the keeper pin in

Preston and Ian were outstanding to work with and get the proper fit for my truck and trailer. Very detail oriented and everything they told me was spot on. Thanks guys!

Very happy with the towing system and have put over 20k miles with them.

We recently purchased a larger travel trailer and decided to upgrade our weight distribution system. After reading Etrailer reviews and going with the suggested setup we bought the Reese Strait-Line system RP6613. Setup was time consuming and very finicky. Unfortunately getting the system setup so the cams ride in the bars properly was extremely difficult and frustrating. The weight distribution part worked great as advertised. The sway control on the other hand seems nonexistent. Equalizer WDS setup, adjustment and performance are far above the Reese systems.

by:

I recently purchased the straight line dual cam hitch with sway control. I've dealt with etrailer in the past and have always been very satisfied with not only the product but also the company. When I called etrailer I had some concerns as to whether I was looking at buying the correct hitch (12000 lb.) or needed the 15000 lb. I spoke with Nik and voiced my concerns. He was knowledgeable and we agreed that the 15000 lb. would be a better fit for my application. Within a few days UPS delivered the hitch. Really quick service. Now, I hate calling a company to order anything. It always seems you get the hard sell to by other items and it is very irritating. Not so with etrailer. We had a pleasant conversation with no hard sell. Just what I was looking for and that was it. I haven't had the opportunity to install the hitch yet but I'm sure if I need any help it's just a phone call away. Thanks Nik and etrailer.

by:

etrailer provides excellent service and fast shipping. I ordered the Reese strait line for my new 34 foot toy hauler. The instructions provided by Reese are not the best; however, etrailer has videos and made things much easier. Once installed I went for a test drive. The sway I was getting from the friction bar set up was gone. I Could cruise at freeway speeds one handed and not fight the trailer. I definitely recommend this product, and purchase it from etrailer if you want great service.

by:

The weight distribution hitch and dual cam sway control were installed on a 2005 F250 pulling a 2003 Jayco "toy hauler".
The instructions were very easy to read and understand making assembly and adjustments easy.
The only complaint I have...A $500 hitch shouldn't have chips of paint missing and all "scuffed" up when it arrives!

by:

So impressed with how easy it was to find and order what I needed. Time on it coming was amazing. At first I thought it would be weeks before receiving my items. Nope, I was wrong. I recommend etrailer.com to anybody looking for any kind of item when it comes to braking systems and distrabution hitches. I will use them for all my needs and what they provide.

Thank you etrailer.com !!!!!

by:

Hitch arrived in two boxes which were in good shape considering the weight. On opening all parts were received. Not having time to install yet, but having tested the placement of hitch, the most time needed will be checking measurement and drilling the frame of the trailer after that its straight forward bolting together. This could be a hard project if it was my first time, but can be done easily if you have the right tools The Reesee strait line hitch looks like a well design hitch witch should handle the weight and sway. Will write again when installed and towing.

by:

Product arrived quickly and as always etrailer was a big help. I watched one of the installation videos for the product I ordered. The video was much easier to understand and way more helpful than the written instructions. Thanks again for the professional and knowledgable service.

by:

The system worked great on our 1600 mile trip. I had no issues with it. I pull a 38 ft. travel trailer with a 2014 Ford F-250. I especially enjoyed the increased control when tractor trailers would pass. I would definitely recommend this system to other RV'ers. Well worth the price.

by:

This is one stout WD hitch system! Pretty straight forward installation instructions which is aided by watching a video on it. Looking forward to using it soon.
E-Trailer service is not to be compared to any other....it is outstanding!

by:

It is what I needed for my new hitch. I will be be installing it today on my hitch head. Waiting for my new trailer. Should be here soon.

by:

Does what It suppose to . That said there are some weak spots. Rivets instead of bolts on chain clamp (drill out & replace w/ bolt ). Metal quality weak on chain plate & tension bar rest .

by:

In the process of installing the quantity of the castings leaves a lot to be desired usually China does a better job. Sand casting is very rough instructions seem to be good, no problem so far. I have been towing trailers 40 years

by:

This made a big difference in towing my 13000lb Trailer

by:

I have a 12000 lb on my camp trailer, but needed a 15000 for my equipment trailer.

by:

work great for pulling my 16' X 10' inclosed trail

If your tongue weight is 1,500 lbs you'll want the Strait Line system # RP66075 which has a tongue weight range of 1,000 to 1,700 lbs. Ideally you get your tongue weight to fall as close to the middle of the range of the system. The # RP66075 would work great for 1,500 lb of tongue weight. If you went with a system that had 1,500 lbs as the top of the range you'd be at the max and the system wouldn't be as effective. If you have a 2 inch hitch you'll then need the shank part # RP54998....

This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. • Best Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System for a 2016 Keystone Cougar Travel Trailer
For your 2016 Keystone Cougar Travel Trailer, it's best to use the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System that's rated for 12,000 lbs gross trailer weight, part # EQ37120ET. • Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 Towing a 9,300 Pound Trailer
At 9,300 pounds, that would put the tongue weight of the trailer between 930 and 1,400 pounds. That also does not include the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle that also counts towards tongue weight. • Weight Distribution System for a Cargo Trailer With an 800-1000 lb Tongue Weight
The most important part of choosing a weight distribution system is choosing a system that is rated to work with the weight of your trailer. Based on the 800 to 1,000 lb tongue weight of your trailer I would recommend a weight distribution system with a tongue weight rating of 1,500 lbs. For your situation I would recommend a trunnion bar system like the Strait-Line Trunnion Weight Distribution with Sway Control, item...

  • Coupler Replacement Recommendation for a 10k Pintle Trailer for Installing Weight Distribution
Weight distribution systems can't be used with the pintle setups. The only option you would have for installing one would be to remove the ring on your trailer and install a coupler. I attached a link to a page that has all of the A-frame couplers we offer. The part # CA5400 would be a great option. This has a 14k capacity and is designed to fit a 2-5/16 inch ball. If your cargo is going to weigh around 10k most likely you are going to need a higher rated system though. For that the part...
