Correct Blue Ox TrackPro for 2017 Airstream with 6,000 lb GVWR

Published 06/20/2024

Question:

Hi. I am purchasing a 2017 Airstream 23’ Flying Cloud FB. It’s GVWR is 6000 lbs and the tongue weight is 470lbs. Is my Blu Ox Track Pro weight distribution with sway control-7 hole shank - 6k GTW, 600lbs TW #BLU36FR adequate, or should I contemplate a stronger set up? Thanks.

Hey John, thanks for reaching out!

If the 470 lbs of tongue weight you're talking about is with the 2017 Airstream fully loaded for travel then the 6K Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU36FR is a great solution for you as long as your tongue weight is 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight.

Otherwise I recommend the 8K Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU47FR because it gives you the ability to load your Airstream to the full GVWR and still be effective.

Thank you for your prompt reply! A couple of more questions: how would I know if this “new to me” 2017 23’ AS Flying Cloud FB is pre-wired for a backup camera. If not, how do I get power to a wireless setup that you might recommend? Thanks. John W

@JohnW Happy to help! Your Airstream will be pre-wired if it either has some tags on it stating this, or if you look at the back and you can see a mounting bracket similar to the Furrion Shark Fin Camera Mounting Bracket # FRCBRKT-BL just hanging out. I'm pretty sure your Airstream will be wired for a Furrion setup (if it is pre-wired) so whether you have the pre-wiring or not I recommend the Furrion Vision S Wireless RV Backup Camera System # FOS05TASF. to wire up the camera you simply need to make 2 connections for the camera wiring harness; 1 for power and 1 for ground. The ground can be connected anywhere to the trailer frame, and the power can either be connected to a reverse light or the running light circuit. I recommend the running light circuit so you can send power to the camera by turning the headlights on in your tow vehicle. This means you can actively use the camera whenever you choose instead of having to place your vehicle in reverse for the camera to receive power.
