Can I Use Weight Distribution Hitch On 2025 Honda Pilot With Unibody Frame?

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/20/2025

Question:

Currently looking for RVs that I can safely tow with a 25 AWD Honda Pilot and Im not being able to find a definitive answer on whether we can add a WDH on the 4th gen Pilots? I found the next statement in the owners manual: Your vehicle is designed to tow without the need for a load distributing hitch. If you wish to use one, please consult your trailer maker for proper installation and set-up. Improper set-up could degrade the handling, stability, and braking performance of your vehicle. Kind of an ambiguous note on Hondas part but I know in previous generations a WDH was explicitly discouraged. General consensus as I understood was that unibody vehicles were not compatible with these, but lve seen plenty with them installed on different forums. Thanks.

Hello Francisco, thanks for reaching out. You are correct that weight distribution (WD) hitches should not be used on vehicles with unibody frames. The frame is not made to handle the additional stress added by the WD hitch. I am sure there are people out there that do it, it's a free country after all lol, but it is not something I can recommend because of the unibody. That combined with the verbiage in the owners manual, I would discourage you from using a WD hitch, but it is ultimately your call.

For sway control, one option would be an electronic sway control system like the Tuson Trailer Sway Control System # 335TSC-1000. This installs on the trailer and basically feathers the trailer brakes as needed to control sway.

If you do end up using a WD hitch anyway, I recommend going with something like the Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU36FR. This is for trailers with a tongue weight between 200 and 600 lbs. I like the blue ox systems because they give good results and they are easy to set up correctly. Take a look at the video I linked below.

I hope this helps. Leave a reply below with any comments or questions and I am happy to get back to you.

Hey Francisco, did you end up trying the Tuson sway control system with your Honda Pilot? Your experience could point others toward the best way to manage trailer sway with a unibody vehicle.
