Video Transcript for Replacement Trunnion Spring Bar for Reese Weight Distribution System Review

Hi, there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Reese replacement weight distribution trunnion spring bar. This is going to replace a cam style spring bar that will work with your Reese weight distribution systems with dual cam sway control like the one you see on the screen there with the 12,000 pound gross towing weight and the 1,200 pound tongue weight. This trunnion bar is constructed of a hot rolled and tapered steel, so it is going to provide superior strength and flexibility. It does have that 600 to 1,200 pound tongue weight so it is going to work as a direct replacement for that model of weight distribution system that I just showed, or if you have a similar weight distribution system with that Reese style and you're wanting to replace the spring bar to either go up in weight or down in weight to meet your application's needs, this will be a great option for that as well.

You can see it does have the curved end here that it is designed for that dual cam sway control system. So make sure you're getting the right one for you. You can see it does have the trunnion design up here as well, so it's gonna work really well. And because this is a direct replacement from Reese, you can trust that he is gonna fit right in place of your original. No worries about compatibility or anything like that.

So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Shipment came quickly, box was broken and some bolts were loose in the box, but they all made it. I really appreciate the help in deciding what I needed. There was no pressure to buy, just good advice. The site also made it very clear by having videos available, and by having in addition to packages, parts to upgrade my situation. Thanks.

The service was excellent. The shipping level was upgraded at no charge and the Spring Bars arrived in perfect condition. I received personal emails at every stage of the transaction which makes a real difference if there was a problem to deal with. Because of the early delivery I was able to reset my Weight Distribution setup this weekend and I am ready to go camping again!

They are heavy-duty!

Replacing the Dual Cam II 800 lb spring bars with P/N RP66009 1200 lb spring bars was the solution for our new TT with increased GVWR at 7850 lbs and TW at 900 lbs. Just raised the tow head on the shank and adjusted the ball angle slightly towards TT to get my truck front end back down where it needed to be. Etrailer was very helpful answering my questions and delivered the bars promptly.

I always deal with etrailer. The only reason why I possibly might not buy my trailer and towing needs from someone else is if etrailer doesn't carry them!! I've used the Reese Strait-Line equalizer and sway control system for 20 years, and bought the Reese Strait-Line for my son and sister-in-law. I prefer it to other systems such as the "Equalizer" brand system because the Reese "dual-cam" system is the only one which has a center detent position on the "bent bars". If the trailer moves to one side or the other, it must first put several hundred pounds more tension on the "bent bars". This tension forces the trailer to move right back to the straight-behind position without any steering wheel movement at all. I already have these 1200 lb. bars on my Strait-Line hitch and sway control. My sister-in-law is getting a new trailer with heavier tongue weight, and these bars will replace the 800 lb. bars she has now.

The heavier-duty spring bars have worked out well on my sister-in-laws new, heavier travel trailer. No problems at all, truck trailer tow level.

Trailer was an easy site to purchase from. Satisfied woth the service and shipping time. If I need anything trailer/towing related I would use this site again and certainly recommend it.

I have owned a Reese weight distribution system now for almost four years that I use on my 28' Pace Car Hauler Trailer. I have been extremely satisfied with the performance of the system and the recommendations and continued on-going service from the folks at etrailer.com.

Excellent product

by:

Folks at Etrailer are wonderful. Thanks for all the instructional videos that help us with our hauling needs. I needed to replace my 800/10,000 lb trunnion bars with 1200/12,000 bars when purchasing a heavier trailer. Etrailer got the new ones sent out to me in good time, and FREE SHIPPING on these heavy dudes. I notice the new ones are slightly (maybe 1/2 inch) longer, so will need to review how they hook up to my Reese Dual-Cam anti sway hitch.

by:

Great service and a great product. I purchased my 2nd Reese straight line load distribution/anti-sway system. The first one the dealer installed. This time I installed it myself and it went without a hitch. (pun intended). I did have to exchange the spring bars due a math error on my part and the shank for the system apparently escaped from a box. But not a problem. Etrailer staff had them to me in 2 days and I was on my way on schedule. Great job Bryan!

by:

etrailer is a great place to buy from, I've been a customer since 2007. Great price, fast, great customer service, plus plenty of online help. Reese weight distribution systems make trailering much easier and safer. I've owned 3 travel trailers and would not want to tow without the reese strait-line weight distribution system with sway control.

  • Compatibility of Resse Shank 54970 With Trunnion Bars 54946 and Hitch Head With Patent 5375867
I was able to find a document with Reese which shows the Head # RP58167 having the PAT Pending NO. 5375867. This is compatible with the Shank # RP54970 you found. As for the trunnion bars, the part 54946 relates to the end of the trunnion bar that would mount inside the hitch but for 1,500lb bars. Since you mentioned 12,000lbs that would use the Trunnion Spring Bar # RP66009

  • Can Curt Spring Bars Be Used With A Reese Weight Distribution Hitch Head
No, most weight distribution hitch heads have specific spring bar fitments so they're typically not interchangeable. You would want to find the specific model of your Reese weight distribution hitch and determine the proper spring bar capacity for it in order to use the system. Some systems will allow you to use multiple capacity spring bars within their model, while others require specific spring bars for each weight capacity. For example, if you had the Reese Strait-Line # RP66084 you...

As long as your Strait-Line Weight Distribution (WD) System, like part # RP66083, isn't underrated for your towing setup and you haven't gone past the 5th chain link like you mentioned then you should be good to go. With friction sway control there is always going to be some noise because it is metal on metal and if you check out the attached photo you can see that there was a slight bend to the trunnion bars when we installed this same system. If you can give me some more details about...

This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. If the loaded tongue weight (TW) of your trailer is around 2,300 lbs then any weight distribution (WD) system that is rated for a max of 1,200 lbs TW will not be strong enough to help out at all. Check your TW to ensure that it is 10-15% of the loaded weight of your trailer. If it isn't you need to move stuff around until you achieve the 10-15% area. • What Trunnion Spring Bars do I Need for My Reese Head Part # 58167 ?
Hello Randall, When picking out the correct trunnion bars to go with your Reese 58167 weight distribution head it is most important to be as close to the loaded tongue weight as possible. Your tongue weight will typically fall between 10-15% of the overall trailer weight. You mentioned a weight capacity of 9K, but I think you are referring to how much the F150 can pull. The best way to find out your trailers tongue weight is to load up the trailer as you normally would and use something...

Based on your photo, it appears you have the dual cam system of the Reese Strait-Line. I researched your trailer to find a GVWR of 5895. Based on this, we can make some calculated assumptions on the tongue weight. The tongue weight of a trailer is typically 10 to 15%, so that would put you at 590 to 885 lbs. • Correct Spring Bars for Reese WDH for 6,000-7,000 Pound Trailer
For a proper setup, you want the spring bar rating to match the tongue weight of the trailer. 600 lb spring bars are not going to be rated high enough. The tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight so you're right at the top of the range or over depending on the car you load and how it is loaded.
