Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

Piece of cake to install, has no effect on normal ride (which is good). It's too soon for me to give any meaningful feedback re use when vehicle is loaded but everything is positive so far and I can definitely see how they would help under heavy loads. Compared to the standard bump stops these are almost twice the height so the axle will definitely hit these before they would've hit the OE version and give the heavy duty nature of these, combined with the "hollow" design I can envision how they'll add to the stability of the suspension under max loads. 450768

2003 Toyota 4Runner

I put TTORSEQ on the rear of my 2003 4Runner Sport, I had noticed the 4Runner had settled over the years particularly in the rear when I tow a Chalet camper. I was looking for helper springs or replacing the rear springs (very expensive). I was not aware of this type of suspension support but it came up on a Google search. They work great! There is a significant difference when towing the camper. ONE recommendation for Timbren. In the installation instructions include torque values for the bolt attaching the bump stop to the bracket. I was surprised at how much torque was required and initially thought Timbren had sent me the wrong bolts - they had not. 281057

Working great. I had read reviews about them being too stiff whem you aren't pulling a trailer, but it seems like they softened up a bit after first putting them on. I felt a few hard jolts going over speed bumps and such the first few days, but now I don't notice them at all when I don't have a trailer attached. They are still improving the ride with a heavy trailer. I'd give 5 stars but my mechanic neighbor had to help me install them because there was something wrong with the bolts that came in the package. It was a year ago and I can't remember the details. Without him I think I could have returned them and gotten a fix and installed them by myself. It's a very simple install when all the parts are in good shape. 549083

Install was a breeze. Its been a year and I can definitely say they make a difference. I used to go over some deep pot holes or a deep depression in road surface and my teeth would jar. Now when this happens no bad reaction as before install.Very happy with them.

This is regarding the FRONT installation. Which is everything I'd hoped for. The truck still rides great but no longer bottoms out over any pebble in the road. The front end no longer heals over in turns. I wanted to install a rear kit but it arrived as a mis matched box of parts. To be continued. 231435

The simple fix for the sagging situation. With these new Timbren 'bump stops' in place, both my camp trailer and vehicle *(2006 5 Runner---better than a 4 Runner) ride level and smooth...and even looks cooler than cool. 264664

Installation was relatively straightforward and took about an hour. Make sure that you center the enhancers directly over the axle.....FYI-if you center over the axle, the bolts may not be centered in their slots when attaching the units to the frame. I towed my 3200 lb boat trailer about 35 miles today for the first time since the installation and there was a definite difference in the ride and feel. Big bumps or variations in the pavement felt much better.....no more bouncing. Definitely a must have for towing with your 4Runner. I would have rated 5 stars but I felt the price was a bit high for the product. 213689

These worked great on my 2003 4Runner Limited. I can tow my 16 / 7 ft. trailer with very little squat on the rear axel ... The install was super easy and I didn't need a jack-stand... Just a wrench... That's It !! I took some heavy dips on some Mexican roads with a 7,000 lbs trailer (700 lbs tongue weight). Also the rear cab had 500 lbs..... I was doing 55 mph and I believe it saved me from a hard impact. Courtney B... (the rep)... Recommend the product and I couldn't be happier! 273549

I’ve had these for a year on my 2006 Toyota Sequoia. Purchased them after taking my wife’s horse on a long road trip where we damaged the trailer jack on our horse trailer. The Toyota has a sport suspension and would bottom out when we hit big bumps. These keep it from bottoming out and also help prevent trailer sway. Affordable and very easy to install. Unlike sway bar nothing to hook up when towing and it doesn’t change how the vehicle drives. Completely satisfied! 565135

Product came securely packaged and complete and quick. Took about 45 mins to install. I bought this to try to reduce the 3 1/2 inch sag at the hitch of my Lexus GX460. It did that well. I now only sag 2 inches that I feel is acceptable. The trailer has about 484 lbs weight. The ride doesn't seem affected and towing bounce(porpoising) is gone. Thank you etrailer. 560925

Received the product and installation was very easy. The longest thing to do in the process is taking your tires off. Also make sure you have a vice or c- clamp because to tight the rubber piece to the bracket takes a lot of torque. Have not been able to test it will update my comments later 499383

Worked great on 2017 4runner towing Keystone Hideout 175lhs. If you install them carefully, you can jack up each side as high as you can and take off the existing bumpstop and get the new bracket in and then bolt on the rubber spring. Took an hour including getting tools out. 643856

Received the product quickly and proceeded to install the next day. Removing the existing rubber block was simple, but when I assembled the rubber suspension enhancers, I thought that the bolts had bottomed out before they were tight against the mounting plate. I called etrailer's help line and they suggested that I try mounting them and then tightening the bolt. I did not have the room to do this on the suv, so I "mounted" the plate to my work bench and with a lot of force, the enhancers tightened up perfectly. I believe that this is done to keep the bolts from loosening over time. The rest of the install went great and a test ride confirmed that things were installed correctly. 304790

This product is everything it is advertised to be and more. I needed to transport a 380 pound ALS wheelchair to the VA for an evaluation. A 450 mile round trip. With a total hitch weight at almost 500 pounds with the carrier and the chair, my little stock 2004 4x4 4-runner was not up to the task. I just happened to see your product doing a search for suspension products and felt it may work for me. It is perfect!!!! Kept the rear from sagging, felt great over the bumps and keeps the natural suspension feel even with all the extra weight on the back. They are very simple to install and a perfect addition to my suspension. It will stay for the life of my vehicle...Thanks 3-3-2016 239325

Solid Product! Yeah it's a stiffer ride when loaded But that's the sacrifice made to have more control of the haul while underway. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay more level with a heavy boat/trailer setup as in my case. Not that install is hard but removal of spare tire before install, may have helped with space if you don't have a lift. 511931

I ordered timbrens for the front and rear of my chevy 2500. I have a 2000 lb truck camper and I wanted something to help carry the load a little better. Installed on my 2007 Ram 3500 because I wanted basic leveling & stability under the load of my 5th wheel. I didn't want a complicated air bag system. Summer trips in the mountains of MT & the Pacific NW. 3 months of snowbirding throughout southern AZ this winter. Very satisfied, so I just swapped them onto my new 2018 Ram 3500. I didn't let them go with my trade-in. Just what I need, no effect when empty - engaged when I need them. 628560

The Timbren suspension was delivered on time . The unit was installed using the instructions provided and took about 45 minutes for both sides of the rear axle. I have not put a load on the truck yet to see how it works. There is about 1" of clearance between the rubber timbren stops and the frame of the truck,so it hasn't affected the way the truck handles for now,I'll be able to tell more about it once I hitch my Travel Trailer up.The installation was done on a 2017 Nissan Frontier. 621664

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I bought Timbrens to install on my 2015 Silverado 2500HD truck, which I use to haul our 5th wheel. I had a set of airbags on my old GMC and they worked well, however, they were a concern when it came to maintenance. I saw a review and recommendation for Timbrens and thought they were a great alternative to having airbags installed. I read the instructions and can see no problems with installing them myself - thereby not only saving in the cost over the airbags, but also not having to pay anyone to install the Timbrens. Everything I have read about them makes me feel very good. I don't see the truck lowering with the 5th wheel attached, but having the Timbrens installed will take away any worries with rough roads. 613453

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I finally had a chance to try these out and they work great. Granted, I do have what they market an ultra-light travel trailer, but for my configuration of my 2007 Dodge Durango (4.7L), this trailer totals out about 75% of my towing capacity. That being said, this vehicle has an abnormally smooth ride for it's size. Because of this, the weight at the hitch creates a slight sag in the rear when weighted over 400 lbs. It also created some suspension characteristics I didn't like, like the slow bounce over undulations. I was advised my shocks were in perfect condition and utilizing stiffer shocks would not prevent the sag and would make the overall ride too tight for me. This was the reason for looking into this option. Installation was as simple as it gets (pull off the old and put on the new). The only tools (if you want to call it that) are possibly a couple of 2x4 blocks (of course you're going to need a jack to jack up your vehicle). 4 inches total was needed to properly seat them. It took a total of 30 minutes, but 20 minutes was me pulling out my jack and jack stands, finding blocks, and taking my sweet time. My Durango rode as level as expected after installation. Photos would not show anything noticeable without actually measuring it (about 450 lbs on the tongue with my particular trailer - see photos). I also didn't have to adjust my mirrors, which was inherent in the slight sag I had before. It took bumps well and the ride was not as bouncy as before, more firm and controlled. The ride without the trailer is noticeably firmer, and with little bumps you can tell they're making contact. Mostly noticeable over speed bumps where my Durango would normally float over them due to the long travel. My Durango inherently didn't ride like a truck or large SUV, more like a sedan. Now, it "sorta" rides more like a truck. Not a deal breaker, but if you like your truck to keep riding smooth, these might not be for you. Pros: Works as advertised. Easy installation. Keeps your vehicle level. Firmer more controlled ride. Removed annoying bounces. Great quality build. Cons: With the clearance from your axel to your bump stop now ~1.5 inches, bumps will be felt if making contact (-1 star for me, but if this is not an issue for your application, you should add the star back). Overall, I would highly recommend this product, even for a smaller SUV like my Dodge Durango. That being said, it won't have the same smooth ride with the long travel as before, but definitely worth it if you're towing with the same type of vehicle. 489147

Comments

After a year of use, the product continues to perform as expected. I have specifically put about 6-8 trips with this product and I have not had any issues. This included many miles on the highways and some trail driving. The product continues to perform well, assisting on absorbing undulations and helps keep the vehicle stable and level. I did not mention this before, but its important to know that this product is only a supplement to an already stable suspension and correctly-weighted setup. If properly used, this product will enhance your driving experience, but it will not fix any overweight or setup issues. I still highly recommend this product.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

This product seems as described in etrailer catalog and by salesperson. Very easy to install, both sides and clean up 30 minutes (actual install time was about 15-20 minutes). My truck has 100 gal fuel cell and tool box that is pretty full, so I generally have an extra 1200 lbs in bed of truck full time. Looking at truck it sits level instead of rear sitting up a little, not a big deal except headlights aim a little higher and when pulling trailer with skid steer or mini, truck sags an amount that looks overloaded. After installed truck bed height looks close to an unloaded truck. With full fuel cell the truck rests on the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System, I was pleasantly pleased with the ride and look of the truck. The only minor difference is when truck comes to complete stop, there is a slight "jiggle" in truck. Very minor but it is noticeable. I would definitely recommend and purchase again. I can't wait to see how system performs with loaded trailer hooked up. 594996

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Product was easy to install, 1/2 hr taking my time. Used a open end wrench and floor jack. My 2018 F350 Super Duty Super Cab 4wd no longer plunges over bumps, it has lost all its rear end sway on turning, carries my load much smoother ( loaded all the time ). Even with the load I always carry, the vehicle sits 1” higher in the rear. Prior to the install I was constantly hitting the rubber stops on my factory overload springs. 520123

Excellent! I have since purchased another set from you for a 2019 F350 diesel. These things are just the ticket! The ride and handling is so much better!

I can’t believe how effective these are on my F53 Ford based motorhome, the before and after is night and day. I would not want to be riding down the road without it. 551279

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

The installation took about a half hour on our 2006 Winnebago View. I did not need to remove the tires, just jacked it up enough to unload the suspension a bit. The upgrades have quieted down the front suspension both reducing hard suspension hits and body lean. The front of the View is definitely more settled. Pros: Simplicity, and ease of install. measurable difference in RV suspension performance. Cons: expensive for what they are. The long bolts used do not inspire confidence. 220089

Do you have a question about this Vehicle Suspension?

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancements for a 2016 Toyota 4Runner TRD
  • Yes, the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TTORSEQ will fit your 2016 Toyota 4Runner TRD. I called my contact at Timbren to confirm this. I also recommend the Timbren 1/2" Spacer For Raised Frame Vehicles part # TA25722-90F00 to offset the lift on the TRD models. The Firestone Coil-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F4135 will also work with your 2016 Toyota 4Runner TRD. The main difference between these and the jounce springs is that they are adjustable which means you can...

  • Timbren Front & Rear Bumpstop Options for 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4x4
  • The Expert Answer that you are referring to is for a 2012 Toyota Tundra 4x4. The 2012 Tundra has different rear bumpstops than your 2007 FJ Cruiser 4x4. The part # TABSTORSEQ that fits your Cruiser will not fit on the Tundra. Timbren offers a few different options for you to add some suspension enhancement for your Cruiser and it all depends on how you plan on using it. The Rear Off-Road Bumpstops # TABSTORSEQ are rated for 6,000 lbs whereas the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System...

  • Recommended Rear Suspension Enhancement for Towing and Off-Road Use for a 2018 Toyota 4Runner
  • If your 2018 Toyota 4Runner is a 4 wheel drive then I recommend using the Timbren Active Off-Road Bumpstops # TABSTORSEQ which are rated for 6,000 lbs and were built specifically for towing and off-road use so they will hold up much better than other systems that we have to offer. For a 2018 4Runner that is a 2 wheel drive we have the Timbren Rear Suspension # TTORSEQ which is rated for 3,000 lbs and will do a great job at helping with towing but they weren't built for off-road use so...

  • How Close to Vehicle Frame Should Timbren Springs Sit Once Installd
  • Timbren likes to recommend 1 inch between the axle and the Timbren when the truck is unloaded. We have found that this works the best. For a 1/2 inch spacer you would need the part # TA25722-90P00 and then for a 1 inch spacer part # A25723-90AH00. One of each of these will work great to get your Timbren setup right where it needs to be.

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement System For 2004 Toyota 4Runner
  • I recommend installing the Timbren system # TTORSEQ over the Firestone # F4135. Since you said you occasionally tow or carry a maximum of 3,000-lbs, the Timbren system would be a nice option because you do not have to make any adjustments to the system. As more weight is added to the vehicle either from tongue weight when towing or loading the back of the vehicle, the Timbrens will stiffen to provide more support for the load. Using the Firestone system means you will need to adjust...

  • Rear Helper Springs for a 2014 Lexus GX 460
  • The 3,000 pound capacity of the Timbren springs # TTORSEQ is the capacity of the system or, in other words, the amount of weight pushing straight down on them that they can handle. So if you put 2,000 pounds of stuff over the rear axle of your 2014 Lexus GX 460 the springs would still have capacity to spare. Of course you wouldn't put that much weight in the vehicle but that is just an extreme example. If you towed a trailer that weighed 6,500 pounds the tongue weight would be in the...

  • Recommended Rear Suspension System For 2013 Toyota 4Runner For Towing And Off-Road Use
  • If you are planning on off-road travel with your 4Runner, I recommend the Timbren Active Off-Road Bumpstops, part # TABSTORSEQ. These are designed to cushion the ride of your truck and absorb the shock when bottoming out when you are off-road as you said or when there is a load on the rear of your truck. When you install the Timbrens, the instructions state you want between 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches of clearance between the rubber spring and the contact point on your truck. This means you...

These springs are confirmed to fit your 2012 Lexus GX 460 and feature a 3,000 pound capacity. I have attached the written instructions and a video demonstration that you can check out as well.

  • Suspension Enhancement for 2018 Toyota 4Runner to Reduce Towing Sag
  • You'll have to check the owners manual of your 2018 Toyota 4Runner to determine if it is rated for use with a weight distribution system. Or it can be listed on the hitch as well. You'll see two sets of towing capacities most likely there. One as "weight carrying" and one with "weight distribution. Otherwise you'd want to look into suspension enhancement like the Timbren kit part # TTORSEQ which is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and will give you additional rear suspension support...

  • Solution for Timbren System that is Spaced too Far Away from Vehicle Axle
  • Timbren likes to recommend 1 inch between the axle and the Timbren when the truck is unloaded. We have found that this works the best. What you would need then is a 1 inch spacer part # A25723-90AH00 and a new longer bolt that you would have to source elsewhere and your Timbren would be properly setup on your vehicle. The spring being just slightly off-center like yours would not be a problem either.

  • Can Timbren System be Used With Weight Distribution on 2007 Toyota 4Runner
  • With a properly rated weight distribution system that is properly set up you should not need a Timbren. If you are still getting sag then one of three things is happening. Either you are just exceeding the towing capacity of your vehicle which is why the WDH hitch can't keep up, your system is rated too low, or you don't have enough spring bar tension. That being said a Timbren kit part # TTORSEQ is a fit for your 2007 Toyota 4Runner and would give you additional suspension support....

These jounce-style springs will do a nice job of reducing rear sag on your vehicle, however they likely aren't the best solution for your particular application. It's hard to come up with a WD system for a lower rated setup though. Most applications with that low of a tongue weight either have hitches not rated for WD systems or the WD system just isn't needed. • Will Timbren Jounce Spring TTORSEQ Make Off-Road Ride Quality Rough
  • Timbren rear axle jounce spring kits, like # TTORSEQ that fits your 2005 Lexus GX 470, are normally not engaged with the axle with the vehicle unloaded, meaning not full of passengers and/or cargo and not loaded by trailer tongue weight. If you have a set of taller/stiffer aftermarket coil springs then you would need to test these for yourself as the manufacturer does not test fit with aftermarket coil springs, just the factory ones. • Is Weight Capacity of Timbren Springs for 2012 Toyota 4Runner for the Gross Trailer Weight
  • The capacity rating on Timbren springs such as # TABSTORSEQ or # TTORSEQ for your 2012 Toyota 4Runner is the vertical load capacity of the springs as a set. So in other words it is how much weight pushing down on them they can handle. In either case they are rated for far more weight than the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle itself . . . unless you plan on towing a 30,000 to 60,000 pound trailer!
