Firestone Sport-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Sport-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Firestone Sport-Rite airline installation

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Sport-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's tapered-sleeve Sport-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Video Transcript for Firestone Sport-Rite Air Helper Springs Installation - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Today on this 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, well be installing part number F2320, the Firestone Fort Ride Air Helper Springs. We have all the parts in our car here. First well take our air fitting and screw it into place. Run it down until it stops and then will have to turn more. Now take the bracket and set it on top, and then install our two 3/8 bolts. Well go ahead and tighten those down.

Next well flip it over and install our flat round disc and then our bottom bracket which will be sitting on the top of the spring. Well use another 3/8 bolt to fasten the bracket into place. Well fit that in just enough for the thing to hold together. Heres a jaunt stop that we have to remove and modify. There is a bolt holding in place.

All right now we need to take apart the jaunts bumper. We got to remove the hardware from the bumper itself. Whats going to happen is the space were going to be adding to the top of this with a longer bolt. Were going to put this in the bench device and were going to knock the bolt straight down. All right now, were going to go ahead and see how the bolt and spacer gets installed.

Were going to take our 15mm metric bolt and lock washer, and were going to install that from the bottom side. Then were going to add a little bit of electric tape to the thread right here, just help hold it in position. Then well take our spacer and flat it over the top. And then well attach this to the frame with the flat washer and a metric nut. Go ahead and take our spring assembly and one half will sit over the U bolt for the springs and the other half will sit right around the springs right here.

And then the clamp on the bottom holds it in place. Here we take our bottom clamp and put it into place. Were going to go ahead and tighten this down as best by the instructions and proper tools. There are couple things well look out for. You want this sitting any higher than the edge of the frame, and you want to have a sitting level at the top of the frame as well. And when you drill these two holes out here, on the backside theres two ribs or gussets behind here. Just make sure we drill your holes up in between those. All right, once you get your bracket in place, well have mark out our holes, were going to use the 3/8 bit to find the center. Then well drill up a high hole and then go ahead and put in an attachment point. Then Ill hole the bracket puller so we can find to in the level on it. All right, were going to install the great eight 3/8 bolt. And the backside, well get the large flat washer and locking flange nut. All right, well go ahead and just snug it down, just enough to hold everything in place. Now, the bracket in place, well go ahead and mark and drill the rest of our holes. With the holes drilled, were going to start installing the hardware going towards back, its going to be the same as the bolt we started off to begin with, and then going towards the front is going to use these Q handle nuts. We take this handle and just bend it any way you want to get the angle you need to reach up in there, and this will install the bolt. The bolt hardware installed, then go ahead and snug it down and then torque it down as written in the instructions. Our air springs installed, lets go ahead and start working with the airline. Were going to take one end of the air line. Were going to use the tubing cutter to make sure its cut straight and even. Well take this end and push it into our air line fitting. Just push it in until it stops, were going to gently tug back, and its already done. Now its going to route our line to the back of the vehicle. All right, well take the air line to me and well go ahead and pull it to bumper. All right, were actually not directing to the bracket for the factorys southern pull, and see how we had already installed for a drivers side, were going to add one more for the passenger side. All right, were going to add our fitting, pushing it into place, add a flat washer, another flat washer and then our nut. All right, well take some zip ties that come with the kit and go and zip tie the line to keep it from moving around. And then well go ahead and supply air to it and watch it work. And there you have it for part number F2320 from Firestone.

Ford F-150

Purchased these air helper springs to give my F150 a little backbone when pulling a trailer. They installed easily and I have used them once and they did a great job. The difficulty that I encountered was the instruction sheets for installation were missing half the pages and as fate would have it I was sent the GM pages with the Ford kit. Some of the hardware was missing and the stand off bracket was drilled the mirror image of what it needed to be. So I had to download the pdf file for instructions, needed to know the critical X distance, and made a trip to my drill press where I modified the bracket, rounded up some hardware (washers) and proceeded to mount the air springs. Looks good (have to take into account the brackets are universal, so they are a little sloppy fitting) and works good. I'm quite familiar with air suspensions used on big rigs so it really was a walk in the park. 135730

I purchased a firestone F2320 kit with the air command I kit. When I did so they asked for completed pictures of the install. I have some low resolution shots here, should you want higher resolution or any other images, please let me know and i will send over whatever you need. Unloaded… the kit gave me 3" more height at 80psi. 109787

The product has been great. I never realized how bad the handling was prior to adding the bags. My vehicle was suffering from suspension fatigue prior to installation... now, the vehicle, dare I say, rides better than stock.

This review is for the firestone air springs kit # 2320. It was installed on a 2003 Ford F-150 supercrew 4x4. I ordered this back in January but it has been too cold to install. The shipping was quick and everything was packed well with no issues. Now that the weather has warmed up a little I went ahead and installed the springs on the truck. First thing is the same issue another person had, the instructions were for a GMC/Chevy only. Ford has brake and fuel lines in the way and this caused an issue when I just tried a trial run on the mounting. I contacted etrailer when the link was broken to the instructions and went to Firestone for the entire set. There is a mounting bracket in the kit for repositioning the brake line mount on the frame so the air springs can be attached and once I had the instruction to see how it mounted I went ahead and installed them. Just some advice, if you have an older truck in an area were rust is a problem the driverside bag requires repositioning the brake line for the rear brakes away from the frame rail by an inch. There are fuel lines in there along with the brakes so I also had to bend the brake lines a little to get around the rubber and metal fuel lines so they don’t vibrate together and wear a hole. If you have a truck with a lot of rust you could really have issues trying to do this and really make a mess. The installation took about 3 hours and 2 ½ was on the driverside. The passenger side does not have anything inside the frame rail so it was only 30 minutes there. I have used them on both my carhauler and my camper now just to set air pressure so the truck sits properly and they worked fine. The one thing I see is that they drop 5 to 10 psi after I disconnect the air source. I checked with soap and do not have any leaks and they do not continue to drop only when I disconnect. I did not see anybody else report this but now I just adjust them a little high at first and they drop to where I want them and stay there. 178343

Overall, a well designed kit. The instruction package is reasonably clear to those with mechanical aptitude. There is a typo that reads "reward" where it should say "rearward", but there are no real proofreaders anymore, just spellcheck. As a driveway project, plan on taking a full day to complete the basic installation. If you are opting for the onboard compressor add on kit (F2610), plan on two days to get all of the components properly installed and tested. Now for the real test, take the loaded trailer for a trip! 806195

Excellent product! I put these on my 03’ f150 to help with the suspension while pulling my 34’ camper. I also use a weight distribution hitch and the combination of the two allows the half ton pick up to pull it down the road with ease. These air springs help not only with the ride comfort but also in leveling the camper with the truck. 773741

One year later the sport-rite kit has been a true game changer in towing. Installation was really straight forward took about 1.5 hours in the garage to everything installed. Prior to installing the kit I had a lot of "floating" when towing my jeep behind the truck. Post installation I run the bags at about 40-45lbs of air and I don't even feel the. trailer/jeep when towing. For anyone looking to firm up your tow rig I would highly recommend this kit. For the price you can't beat the value. 357887

Product is fairly easy to install although time consuming. But that was due to some unforseen issues with my bump stop hardware being very rusty on my Silverado. I did get a chance to tow my travel trailer and wow what a difference. I put 40 lbs of air in the bags, less than half of what they are rated for and it held my 25 ft travel trailer perfectly level while maintaining a very nice ride in the truck. I would definetly buy them again. I also like the quick shipping. A great product that is well worth the money Thank You 181061

I have had this same product on my 1999 F150 4X4 for 14 years. It was installed when I bought my Lance lite 815 Camper to shift some of the weight onto the forward axles. I just put on replacement bags due to dry rot and the fact that I've gotten 3 life times out of one set of bags. My father drives truck and its policy there at the truck company to replace the bags every 5 to 7 years. Long story short "Firestone Makes a Awesome quality Product". I recommend it, stand by it, and won't use any other Brand. 117686

I had been using the Timbren SES which was great handling the tongue weight of my trailer but didn't leave much suspension travel unloaded. It was quite jarring traveling over dips in the road when the 1" of travel got used up and the Timbrens kicked in. It is so much smoother driving over the same road since I installed the Sport-Rites. Unloaded I keep them at the minimum 10 PSI and my truck rides like stock. Installation was straight forward especially after watching the etrailer video but it still took me an afternoon. 117284

These are a beast on my 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 Extended Cab. First trip was 3500 mile trip from CA to VA and down to NC. Performed flawlessly with a 10,000lb load in 20 ft trailer, which I took northern route through WY and UT. Took time to ensure air lines were mounted properly but havent had an issue with bleeding since installation was complete. I have used numerous times since trip to haul 1.5 to 2 tons of 57 gravel rock each time. No suspension issues with smooth ride. Product performed above my expectations.

Just installed this morning and it was pretty straight forward. Just take a few measurements to make sure everything is where it should be and its that simple. Hooked up trailer and aired the bags up and it looks like the trailer weighs 200 lbs. The trailer is about 900 lbs tounge weight and it barely moves the truck! Alot better than other things ive seen 87740

I installed these today. My truck is a little older and the stock rear springs are a little tired. I needed something that would help me support the tongue weight of my 2 horse bumper pull trailer a bit better. I ordered these and they showed up just a few days later. Finally had a chance to install them today. It took me about 1.5 hours and the only snag I had was when I snapped a drill bit. I aired up to 30 pounds and took it for a drive. Tomorrow I'll put the trailer on it and air it up some more but they have been great so far. 74717

Review from a similar Sport-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

I have finally done an extensive road test of the Firestone air bag suspension. Prior to installing them I had added a leaf spring and lifted the back suspension two inches. Regardless I was still low in the back when the truck was fully loaded, getting highbeam flashed by oncoming traffic, and the front wheels and steering felt light. The airbags have fixed all and that the truck actually feels much more solid then the factory suspension did without any load. I had to play with the amount of pressure to put into the air bags. It was easy to determine if there was too much as the back would ‘bounce’ over bumps, especially the Mexico speed bumps (my real world testing ground). I keep the pressure at 10-25 psi when not loaded and have it up to 60 psi with all my camping equipment, which includes 150lbs on the roof (rooftop tent, lights, gas can, high lift), a 2 square foot fridge/ freezer inside the cabin, large water containers, 60 lb dog and various sundries. The truck runs stable on the highway and over rough roads (I do drop the pressure over rough roads; 35 psi). I did find that a hand pump was insufficient to pump up the airbags. I bought a cheap (on amazon) 0-150 psi 12v air pump which works very well taking power from a cigarette lighter plug. I have added pictures as requested. Note the air valves where mounted each side of the licence under the light. I drilled a hole. Apologies for the filthy truck. I am currently in Mexico and do not feel right washing the car where water is at a premium for anyone local. 593235

Thanks for the extensive review! FYI- there are on-board compressor systems available like part # F2158
Firestone Air Command I - Analog Gauge w/ Standard-Duty Compressor - Single Function - 130 psi
$233.62
that would allow you to inflate or deflate your air suspension on the fly.

Review from a similar Sport-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Bolted up super easy, the actual bolting of the airbags only took 20 min. Routing the air line took the longest, but that is because I'm so particular about it being a 'clean' install. I would recommend having more cable/zip ties handy, and some adhesive anchors. Also, plan on dropping the spare tire to have better access for mounting the air line. I used the top license plate bolts for the schrader valves, and ended up running the air line to one fitting and using a T fitting and a valve to make having the air pressure even between left and right. 766104

Simple and easy to install. Does exactly what I want and the price was right. My XTerra is mainly off road but I needed some extra support when occasionally towing- this doesn’t limit travel but gives me rear wheel suspension support when needed. 730339
