Video Transcript for An In-Depth Look at the LED Identification Light for Trailers Over 80" Wide

Today, well be installing the Optronics LED Identification Lights for trailers over 80 inches wide part number MCL98RB. First off, well go ahead and measure the width of the trailer and find the center point. Now that we know where the center point is, well go ahead and hold the light up and mark the two holes that we need to drill to mount it to the rear of the trailer. Well also go ahead and drill a hole so that the wires to be put to the rear of the frame of the trailer as well. Well go ahead and wrap up our connections before we put the light in place. Youll need to come up with some screws or some way to fasten the light to the rear of your trailer.

In this case, were using a couple small machine screws, washers and nuts. You will see that theres a white and a black wire that comes out of the back of the light. The white wire, we will need to tie in to a ground somewhere on the frame. The black wire, we will tie in with the running light circuit on the trailer. In this case, its the brown wire.

Now that the light is mounted, to give us the brown wire at the rear of the trailer, well need to add a small section of brown wire to the black wire. To do this, well use a butt connector to extend up through our running light circuit on the trailer. Once weve made our butt connection, we went ahead and also add a little electrical tape to help protect the connection. In this case, it also worked out that were able to fish the brown wire to the part of frame of the trailer to keep it protected. Once we have that done, well go ahead and well put a ring connector on the end of the white wire.

Well need to ground it to the trailer. To do this, we use a self tapping screw. Now that we have our ground wire completed, well go ahead and make our connection with the running light circuit which is the brown wire. To do this, we will split the green and the brown wire using a razor knife, being careful not to damage any installation on the wire. Once we have the wires pulled apart, well go ahead and find a good location where we make our splice.

To make the splice, we use another butt connector where well put the one into the brown wire as well as black wire that has jumper lead now from the new light and one into the butt connector. The other end of the butt connector will have the other end of the brown wire that we just cut. Once we have the butt connection made, well go ahead and tape it up again to give a little extra protection as well as taping the green wire back to the brown wire. Now that weve got this done, well go ahead and do a test on our light to make sure it works. As you will see here, it lights up when the running light circuit is on. With that, that will complete the installation of the Optronics LED Identification Lights for trailers over 80 inches wide part number MCL98RB.

Was the exact replacement for my nitro boat trailer. Looks great!

One year later and lights are still working great.

by:

The light itself is decent, where it falls short is surface mounting. The hot and ground wires are of a decent gauge, however, the hole in the side of the lens is too small to pass both wires through it for a surface mounting. The only alternative is to drill another hole in your mounting spot which, on a heavy trailer such as mine, is very thick steel. See picture

by:

Seem to work good. Didn’t use the boat as much as I wanted. Bought them because I was sick and tired of changing trailer lights yearly.

by:

After two seasons of saltwater fishing the original “ID” lights on my boat trailer were shot. This LED replacement fit the factory hole spacing, is sealed, and hopefully more durable. Installation was easy and it was inexpensive. So far, it’s a win.

by:

Good product- fast ship. The only caveat is the screw holes are narrower and rectangular versus the older model with rounded mounting holes. I just went with slightly longer screws and it aligned perfectly. The light is installed on a boat trailer and is frequently submerged in saltwater, hence the sealed LED.

WOW!
I recently ordered lights to replace
the original lights on my neighbor’s 20 year old DewEze Jay Bed and I couldn’t be happier with the entire process!
Everything arrived quickly and in perfect shape with plenty of cushioning to prevent damage.
The combination tail lights are simply perfect for the application and the reverse lights are BRIGHT!
I actually prefer these surface mounted tail lights over the gasketed style that is currently on my flatbed trailer.
In the future I will be ordering several sets of these to replace the lights on the trailer and for a flatbed that will be going on my own truck, I’m planning on using two sets in the truck’s flatbed with one set on the headache rack using the reverse lights as bed lights, I shouldn’t have any problems seeing stuff on the bed at night.

Still working great 1 year after instal lation.

Fast shipping! Great product!

This LED ID bar is inexpensive and very bright. I put mine on an older steel jet ski trailer. Here's how I mounted mine which was different than the video.

After you have both holes drilled and level, locate the left hole. Measure exactly 2 inches to the left and drill into the frame with a 3/4 hole saw. Go to the hardware store and find the appropriate grommet to protect the wires. The light bar will hide the hole and grommet without any issue. This is especially helpful if you want to hide the ground wire inside the trailer like I did.

What a great idea. Follow up with customers to get feedback. That way you can tell if the products are still good or if they have limited lifespans. You get to see if people are still happy and get them thinking about your company again if theyre in the market for more trailer stuff. To answer your question, I do not have them anymore. I sold all of my gear, but do know they are still working. I really liked those small lights. They put out an incredible amount of light and were easy to install once I drilled holes into my old trailer.

This is my third of forth order from etrailer, All of my projects involve the upgrade to led lighting versus incandescent lighting. No issues, great value and prompt shipping.

Thanks for checking in, the light is working great still and I have not had any problems.

by:

Works great on my boat trailer. My wife accidentally broke a piece off of it by hitting it with the outdrive on our boat. The light now fills with water when launching the boat but, the light still works great. We do not disconnect our lights when backing down the ramp so the lights work while under water, even when fill of water.

by:

If I could give 4-1/2 stars I would. Product is great, bright lights, reasonable price. It would have received 5-stars except it arrived with no instructions. Just two leads, white and black. Black could be positive or negative depending on which standard you follow. As an electrical engineer by profession, I know that connecting LEDs with reverse polarity can instantly change an LED (Light Emitting Diode) into a DED (Dark Emitting Diode)! Kudos to tech support, as they got back to me in one day with the correct connection (Black Positive, White negative) hence the 4-1/2 Star rating. A simple piece of paper in the box with the correct polarity would have given it 5-Stars.

Works as needed.

by:

They delivered exactly what I needed and very fast shipping. Good quality parts. Best part was not having to use amazon to find what I need and have fast shipping. Win win.

by:

Your website was easy to use. I usually order this type of product from Cabelas. Your price for the same lights was much better. Your shipping charges were less. I received my order complete and in just 4 days. The lights were not a perfect match for the originals so I did have to move them slightly and drill a new hole. They look and work great.

After 1 year and about 1200 miles the lights are still working great. I have one of the few trailers on the road with ALL the lights working. Thanks.

by:

On my RnR trailer this light is mounted in the rear below the dove tail and for whatever reason cracks every couple of years and stops working - got two this time.

by:

Recently my boat trailer jack gave up the ghost. I went shopping at etrailer.com and found a replacement jack. I was curious to know if the cylinder on my welded mount would be compatible with a new jack. I contacted etrailers.com and within 12 hours had a response verifying the diameter of the swivel cylinder at 2 1/2". I placed my order and received the new swivel jack within 4 days, and upon removing the old snap ring, I installed the new jack on my existing welded plate in a matter of minutes.
GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE
GREAT SHIPPING TIME
GREAT PRODUCT AT A GREAT PRICE

by:

The products I bought form etrailer are superior to what I replaced on my 1988 stock trailer. The clearance lights both red and amber have a good grounding and 12v supply lugs. Solid lugs for positive connections unlike the old two piece units where the ground and positive connection fails between two cheap movable parts.
I'm very happy with the quality and construction of these lights.
I also ordered the 3 diode ID light bar looks good and works good.
On line ordering is fast and easy and delivery was three days to the west coast which is greatly appreciated thank you everyone at etrailer you do a superb job!!

by:

I purchased the LED identification lights and the round LED lights for my horse trailer. I shopped around and found etrailer to be the best value. I am 100% satisfied with the lights and customer service. Thanks

by:

Ordered a lighting kit for my utility trailer which I am cleaning up and fixing in order to keep it legal on the street. Everything was as described, installed easily, and works great. The lights were identical in appearance to the OEM lights.

by:

Great communication when the lights I order were not in stock for a few days. Also great tips on the website for troubleshooting wiring problems.

Still working, awesome lights !!!

Stripping down a 16 year old 21 ft. salt water use trailer - from end to end. The folks @ etrailer were very knowledgeable, and helpful in my decision making. From placing the order, to tracking the order, to the way the items were packed for transit. Other distributors could learn from these people; in regards to customer service, following up, both office and warehouse. Unloaded the products last night, nothing short, all quality in regards to their products, with great pricing. The installation videos are a big bonus, and something I'll be taking advantage of, during the restoration. Will follow up with picture, (before and after) when I'm done
