Video Transcript for Optronics Trailer Light Right Angle 2-Wire Pigtail Review

Speaker 1: Today we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Optronics right angle two-wire pigtail with a two-prong PL10 plug, part number A46PB. Here's what our connector looks like installed. As you can see, this plug easily allows our light to get power and function properly. As you can see, it's a simple two-wire connection with our ground wire and our power wire. You can use this on all lights that use the industry standard PL10 connector on the back of them, such as your clearance lights, your side marker lights, running lights. Whatever light uses that connector, you can plug this into and cross run your light. What's great about this plug is that it will work with all lights with that style connector regardless of brand.

It's not brand-specific. The reason you're gonna want this connector is if yours has become damaged or you broke a wire and you can't make a repair on the wire. The connection inside that plug has corroded over the course of time, or you're restoring an old trailer such as this one and you need to have your clearance light or your side marker light. This will allow you to do that. Most of our customers have compared this with the Optronics plug, part number A49PB, which has a ten-inch long lead versus the six-inch long lead that ours has here. Now we'll get a few measurements of our wire harness here to see how long it is. Now, going from the end of our ring terminal for the ground wire to the very end of our plug, we're looking at about 7 1/2 inches.

Overall, we have about 6 1/2 inches of total wire length. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. In our particular application, we'll be using our connector to install a side marker light on our trailer. In our case, we'll be working on the front left section of our trailer, right where our missing clearance and side marker light is. Our connector has two wires. The white wire, the ring terminals are brown.

We need to attach this directly to the chassis of our trailer, to the frame. The black wire's a power wire, and since we're using this as a clearance and side marker light, we need to tie this into our taillight and running light wire, which is our brown wire. Now, since we have a very thick frame on our trailer, a small self-tapping screw that would go through this ring terminal is not sufficient for this trailer. We need to use a larger one that can bite into our frame really nicely. The problem with that is it will no longer fit into our ring terminal, so we will change our ring terminal out to a larger diameter one. So we'll cut off the very end of the terminal, strip back some installation, twist our wire together, and the connector we're using is for ten to 12 gage wire, so we'll fold the wire back to make it thicker, slide our terminal on, and we'll crimp that into position.

Take our self-tapping screw, place it on our screw gun. We already have a pre-drilled hole in our frame to accept the self-tapping screw. That'll give us a nice ground connection for our lighting. Now we'll take our brown wire for our taillight and running light circuit, we'll cut it right in the middle, we'll strip back both ends of installation, strip back a little bit more from our pigtail, and twist our pigtail together with one end into the brown wire. We'll use a 14 to 16 gage heat shrink butt connector, which we have available on the website, to crimp that down. We'll place the other end of the brown wire into the butt connector. Now we use a heat gun to properly shrink our butt connector. You wanna make sure you use a heat gun versus a cigarette lighter or an open flame because those will damage the butt connector. This being an indirect source of heat and not a direct flame, it won't damage it.We're on the outside of where we were. Here's our plug that we just installed. Before we install our new light, we'll add a new grommet to hold the light in place. This is a two-inch round grommet with an open back. We have this available on the website as part number A54GB. Take our wires, go through the middle, we'll push the grommet into place. Now we can install our light. In our particular case, we're using the Optronics four LED light, part number MCL55A1224B. So we can grab our plug, push it into the female end of the light. It doesn't matter which way it goes. And then we'll push the light into our grommet. And just like that, we have a properly installed clearance light again. And here's what our connector looks like plugged into our light on the back side. And that completes our look at and showing you how to install the Optronics right angle two-wire pigtail with the PL10 plug, part number A46PB.

Ask the Experts about this Optronics Accessories and Parts

  • What is the Depth of Optronics 2-Wire Pigtail?
I believe what you are asking is the depth of 2-Wire Pigtail # A46PB, and it is 0.6 inches, which is just 0.1 inches more than the depth of both mounting brackets you were referring to, # A91BOB as well as the self-grounding # A91BB. This means it would protrude ever so slightly from the back of the bracket when attached to lights # AL90RB and # AL90AB.

  • Pigtail Harness Recommendation for LED Clearance Lights 47-203667 and 47-203668
Yes, the pigtail part # A46PB that you referenced has been confirmed to fit both the # 47-203667 and the part # 47-203668. You may also be interested in the part # 221588 as well.

  • Two Wire Pigtail Replacement for Grote Trailer Tail Lights
Your picture looks like a Plug-and-Go type of connector at the end of the wire. We do not have a 2-wire pigtail that has that type of connector so you would need to hardwire in the new one instead of using the plug in. You mentioned it was a Grote brand harness. If you can find a part number on it I might be able to confirm if pigtail # A46PB is the correct replacement. We have it listed as a replacement for Grote # 67050.

The red clearance lights are compatible with either 12 volt or 24 volt systems, though when I spoke with Optronics they told me the matching amber lights are obsolete, which means there are only 12 volt amber LED clearance lights. Here are the parts you will need: - LED Clearance or Side Marker Light - Submersible - 3 Diodes - Red Lens - 12V/24V...

  • Hole Depth Needed When Installing Optronics Pigtail # A46PB
Since the Optronics Two Wire Pigtail, part # A46PB can fit several different lights the thickness would vary depending on the light you are installing this with. I pulled one of the pigtails from our warehouse and took a measurement for you. The depth of the pigtail plug is .6 inches. I have included a photo that has the dimension noted on it. This pigtail will fit the following: Uni Bond # PT6020 Wesbar # 108662 Truck Lite # 94902 Grote # 67050 Peterson #142-49 Bargman # 40-00-002 I...

  • Wiring Pigtail Recommendation for a Trailer Clearance Light MC55RB

  • Will LED Clearance Light Work With One Wire
Yes, the Thinline LED Clearance and Side Marker Light - Submersible # AL91AB will work with your single power wire, as it uses a 2-wire (one for power, one for ground) pigtail or 1-wire pigtail with a self-grounding bracket. To mount this light you have a couple options. The first is the Mounting Bracket # A91BOB with Right Angle 2-Wire Pigtail # A46PB; you'd also want to use the Self-Tapping Screw # 1131832. Your other option to mount this light is to use Self-Grounding Mounting...

  • Replacement Amber Clearance Light for Dutchman Kodiak
The lenses on clearance lights are not generally removable as they are often "sonically sealed" such as the Optronics Trailer Clearance or Side Marker Light # MC57AB; this means they are submersible. The Optronics Sealed Micro-Flex LED Trailer Side Marker # MCL50RB referenced in your question does have polarity, but the PL-10 Plug # A46PB that you also have is designed so that it can only be plugged in one way. This is essentially how you will know which way to plug the harness into the light. Since LEDs use diodes, if you were to somehow connect the harness backwards, the light simply would not work and you would just need to turn it around and plug it back in. On the harness itself,...

  • How to Determine if Amber Clearance Light Will Work on Trailer
In order to determine if the Thinline LED Clearance and Side Marker Light # AL91AB will fit your trailer you simply need to measure your light and see if it matches; this light is 2-1/2" long x 1-3/16" wide x 7/8" deep. It is also a great option because it can be either recess or surface mounted. For a surface mount you will use Self-Grounding Mounting Bracket # A91BOB with Plug # A91LW. For a recess mount you will use Grommet # A91GB with Right Angle 2-Wire Pigtail # A46PB. I...
