Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Honda CR-V

Today on our 2017 Honda CRV we're gonna be taking a look at, I'm gonna show you how to install the Curt Class Three Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number C13397.This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. You can see the cross tube is completely hidden behind our bumper fascia, so it's gonna maintain a very nice lean look on the back of our vehicle. This is gonna be a class three hitch. It's gonna have a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. Nice reinforced collar to give it a little extra stability.

Hitch pin hole is gonna be five eights inch in diameter, now the hitch does not come with a pin and clip, however, it can be found here at It's gonna have rolled steel style safety chain loops. It's gonna give us plenty of room for different size safety chain hooks. It's gonna have a really nice black powder coat finish that's gonna resist any rust or corrosion. As far as weight capacities go, we're gonna have a 525 pound max ton weight, which is a downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube. We're gonna have a max two weight of 3,500 pounds, which is a trailer plus a load included.

I do recommend checking the owner's manual of your CRV to make sure the vehicle can withstand that amount of weight. You're gonna pick the lowest number between the vehicle and hitch.Let's give you a few measurements to help you in deciding on any hitch mount accessories you may need such as a bike rake, ball mount, cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of the bumper, it's gonna be about two inches. This number is important for any of your hitch mount accessories you may fold up against your vehicle. From the ground to the top innermost part of your receiver tube, it's gonna be about 13 inches. Now let's show you how to get this installed.

First thing we need to do to start our installation is we're gonna need to lower our exhaust. We're gonna have three rubber isolators that we need to remove. You're gonna have one above your muffler on this side, one above your muffler on this side. We're gonna have one right in front of the rear axle here in the center. We're gonna take some spray lubricant and we're gonna spray each one of our isolators and take a pry bar and we're gonna pry them off.

We're gonna do that same thing here on the other side of the vehicle and then we're gonna do this center one here just like that. Our instructions are gonna tell us to remove five fasteners right here across the back of our fascia, you can see here we only have two. We have one here on this side, and one on this side. If you're vehicle has the other three, you want to make sure you pull out all five of them. To pull them out, we're just gonna take a flathead screw driver, you're gonna pry that center out and then we're gonna pry the base off with it.Next, you're gonna see two large open holes on your frame around each side and you're gonna see two smaller ones. We're gonna take our seven sixteenths bolt, our spacer block and our pull wire. We're gonna actually bring our bolt out through these two holes where we're gonna use these as access holes to get our hardware into the frame rail. We're gonna take our pull wire spring side. Kind of bend it a little bit like that. We're gonna go in this hole and we're gonna come out this hole. Just like that. Spacer block on and then you're gonna thread on your seven sixteenths bolt here and push your spacer block up in there and then your bolt and pull it down like that.Do the same thing with this one. Get your spacer block in there and bolt. You want to make sure that your spacer block is not turned sideways where it's going this way or else it pushes your bolt off crooked. We're gonna make sure that it's, you can see how it's kind of sticking out here that it's running the length, or the same way the frame rail is. You're gonna repeat the same process on the other side.Next we trim out our fascia and our underbody panel per our instruction. You can se how I have it marked out here. I'm gonna use a rotary tool for my fascia. And we can just take a utility knife around our edges and clean off the burs. Then as far as our underbody panel, again make sure you just follow the instructions on your measurements. This is just cardboard, so I'm just gonna use my utility knife to cut that. Now with an extra set of hands, we're gonna get our hitch into place. We're gonna feed our pull wires through the corresponding holes in the hitch. We're gonna hitch over our exhaust. We're gonna pull back on our fascia and slide our hitch up behind it. If you noticed, we we're having trouble getting one of our bolts to drop through the hole to hole to line up. Well what it was, was right up here, you can see this little plastic bracket here. What that is, is for our wiring harness that runs across the back. What we had to do is we just pushed that bracket up over top of our hitch and we we're able to line up our bolt holes.Once you get them lined up, go head and remove your pull wires and install your phalange like that. Next we'll have our half inch carriage bolt, large square spacer like this. We're gonna go through this bracket, through our two hook on the bottom, put on our spacer block and then our phalange knot. Now with an 11/16th socket we're gonna tighten and torque all of our hardware to the specifications in the instructions. We're gonna repeat that for all remaining hardware.Once you have everything tightened and torqued, you can reinstall your exhaust. You just want to make sure you reinstall your push pins fasteners in the bottom of your fascia and you're ready to go. That will do it for a look at and installation on the Curt Class Three Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13397 on our 2017 Honda CRV.

Easy install, great online installation video. Saved a ton of money over dealer install cost. 628924

When pretty well on the install on my new 2019 Honda CRV. I did it by myself in 1 hour. I watched the video E-Trailer has on their web site. They show marking and cutting the plastic bottom valance 3 inches on center of the tow strap. I had trim about an 1/8 inch more on each side. I also took completely off the cover on the bottom of the tire well. It only took an additional few minutes to do, but it made it easier to get hitch in above the bumper cover being as I was by myself. 614436

The hitch fit perfectly, and the instructions were very clear. The hardware fish wires that come with hitch are an excellent idea, and really aided with the installation. The only difficulty with the installation has nothing to do with the hitch. Be prepared to have some frustration with disconnecting and reconnecting the exhaust hangers. A little WD-40 really helped the rubber supports slip back into the posts. 604014

Installed hitch in a couple of hours (took several breaks) in driveway with little trouble. Arrived shipment in two days, boxed up at front door. Every thing was perfect. 570504

2018 Honda CR-V

Great hitch at a great price. This was my first hitch install and it went pretty smooth. 1.5 hrs from unboxing to having the garage cleaned up. If you consider yourself mechanically inclined whatsoever, you can do this job. First I simply used the Honda car jack that came with the CRV and got the rear end up on a couple jack stands. There are a handful of push pins that hold a cover over the spare tire as well as a couple nuts that came off easily. I then lowered the exhaust as shown in the how to videos. I have a 2018 CRV Touring so I have the hands free gate option. Honda does make a bracket to relocate the bracket which moves this sensor to the side of the hitch, but I never use it to begin with so I simply unplugged and removed. No lights were on on the dash telling me there was a problem. So I’m just going to leave it off for now. Looks like there is plenty of room with the hitch installed for the sensor to be easily relocated. I then trimmed the silver plastic on the bumper as noted in the instructions, but found out I needed to trim a little wider than the 3” noted in the instructions for everything to fit. Not much but more like 3.375”. The trimming noted on the spare tire cover worked perfectly. It was easy enough to get the bolts threaded into the frame with the supplied coiled wire bolt holders, I tighted everything up, cleaned everything up, and it looks great. There was a small scratch in the paint of the hitch near where it goes around the muffler, either from etrailer’s warehouse or from Curt that was down to the metal, but I just coated it with a little spray paint to stop any premature rusting. It’s a hitch right? They don’t have to be real pretty. The CRV is only rated to pull 1500lb even though this is a class 3 hitch, so it’s a bit overkill, but went with this hitch because it had a 2” receiver hole, and it’s cross tube is completely hidden in the CRV’s bumper like the 1-1/4” options. I’m going to use this to pull an occasional small trailer or a bike rack is all but there are so many more options for a 2” receiver than an 1-1/4” including hitch covers, steps, rear platforms, that sort of thing. Would recommend this hitch to ALL CRV owners. 557977

I had watched the videos and done the research but since I wasn't going to actually do the install I was concerned that the mechanic would get it done right and have all the information needed to do his part. My order arrived very smoothly and the mechanic installed it in 2 hours including the wiring harness. The reciever, hitch kit, wiring harness and other small stuff cost me around $250 and installation was $200. Compare that to the dealer at $1071. I have never seen a retailer website so generous with information like etrailer, the experience was a pleasure and I am likely to be back for accessories for my hitch. 576781

Once installed it looks good. Instructions were not precise in terms of sequence of steps and black/white pictures were difficult to read. This is my 3rd hitch through etrailer and was most difficult to install. Also, there is a slight interference with the spare wheel well to the hitch. 551313

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Comparing the 2 Trailer Hitches for a 2018 Honda CR-V
  • The biggest difference between the Draw-Tite # 76128, Curt # C13397, and etrailer # e98848 trailer hitches for your 2018 Honda CR-V is that the Draw-Tite has a visible cross tube once installed while the Curt and etrailer have a "hidden" design where only the receiver is visible (see comparison photo). The Curt and etrailer hitches have the exact same design and will install the same way but I recommend going with the etrailer hitch over the Curt option because it has a matte black finish...

  • Recommended Best Trailer Hitch Receiver When Comparing Options for 2019 Honda CR-V
  • The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76128 , the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13397, and the etrailer # e98848 are all very similar. They will install in the same location on your Honda frame but they are rated for different load capacities and both of these capacity ratings greatly surpass the manufacturer towing capacity outlined in your owners manual, so I don't recommend making that the determining factor. The Curt # C13397 or the etrailer # e98848 is my recommendation...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Harness Fits for 2018 Honda CR-V
  • My contact at Draw-Tite advised that they have not yet had a 2018 Honda CR-V in for test fit of the Class III hitch # 76128 nor the wiring harness kit # 118741. This does not necessarily mean they will not fit, only that the new model year has not been tested physically. However our other primary hitch supplier, Curt, does confirm a hitch fit for all versions of the 2018 CR-V, their Class III hitch # C13397 and their 4-pole wiring harness kit # C56370 which fits AWD models. • The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 76128 and the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13397 are very similar in style and function. They are both easy to install and will work well with accessories. The biggest difference is the Curt hitch is rated for less weight and requires fascia trimming for installation. The Curt hitch also recommends using the support strap # 18050 for any non-trailer load, but the Draw-Tite does not require this. The strap...

  • What is the Best Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Honda CR-V with Hands-Free Tailgate
  • The best trailer hitch for your 2018 Honda CR-V Touring with the hands-free tailgate is the Curt, part # C13397. I prefer the Curt over the Draw-Tite hitch, part # 76128, because the Curt's crossbeam is completely hidden behind the vehicle's bumper. All you see when it's installed is the receiver opening and the safety chain loops. The installation is a little more in depth, but in the long run I think it's worth it. No matter which hitch you choose in order to maintain your hands-free...

  • Where is Hands-Free Liftgate Sensor Moved to When Installing Curt Trailer Hitch on 2018 Honda CR-V
  • When installing Curt Trailer Hitch # C13397 on your 2018 Honda CR-V you will need to contact your Honda dealer and get part 08U59-TLA-100A. The dealer, or another mechanic, will need to install this and it will be located just next to the center of the hitch, in the bumper. I have sent you a link to the instructions I found online. The other option is to install Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 76128 so you would not have to relocate the liftgate sensor; the trade-off is that this hitch does...

  • Recommended 2-Inch Class III Hitch for 2017 Honda CR-V
  • We offer 2-inch Class III aftermarket trailer hitches that will be much better for using a hitch-mount bike rack on your 2017 Honda CR-V than the light-duty Class I hitch currently installed. Class III hitches have higher weight ratings and in general will offer better compatibility with the range of hitch-mount accessory items available today. Of the two options we can offer, Curt # C13397 and Draw-Tite # 76128, I suggest the Draw-Tite since it has both a lower price and a higher weight...

The center sensor will be blocked by the hitch receiver opening, but just a few inches to either side of center will work fine.
