Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

Bolted up nicely on the 2020 CRV Hybrid. Don't use it for trailers since the hybrid is not rated to tow but works perfectly for my bike rack that I share with my other vehicle, a Grand Cherokee. Had to trim some plastic and move the tailgate foot sensor and is tucked away nicely so it doesn't drag.

2021 Honda CR-V

recently purchased this hitch for my 2021 Honda CR-V. The main purpose I purchased the hitch is for a hitch mounted bike rack. The CR-V isn’t very accommodating for strap mounted bike racks. As for the installation of the hitch, I would rate it as a 7 with 10 being the most difficult. The etrailer video instructions are good and cover everything I think you should know. The video shows the installation using a car lift. I did the installation with jack stands. I would highly recommend getting the exhaust hanger tool. I did have a couple of different sizes of pry bar’s but the hangers were difficult to release. Also, aligning the CR-V mounting bolts to the hitch mount points took a bit of maneuvering. Otherwise, everything installed pretty much how the video showed it. The hitch looks good as noted in the attached pictures. Overall, I’m very happy with this hitch.

Comments
It sounds like that the side brackets were knocked out of alignment. This can happen while in transit to our facility or to you. We do have a great FAQ that provides ways to move the brackets back into alignment so the hitch can be installed.

Fit was perfect and installation was mostly uneventful. Looks good. Instructions could be a little bigger print is the only issue I have

Great hitch, looks great on the CRV, I was a little nervous cutting the area for the hitch but took my time, watched the video over and over again. Made sure my measurements were right and I felt good about them and it went great and looks great.
Only problem….. my sensor for using my foot for the tailgate. I bought a new plate that moves the sensor and it still doesn’t work right.

by:

This was a very good buy for our Honda CR-V! It was a very straightforward 1-2 hour install for 2 people (probably tougher with 1 but likely still possible) and it's been rock-solid for something like 15-20 trailer-hauls we've made over the past year.

The installation thread lines were indispensable for the project so I strongly recommend getting a kit with those on there. We used a Dremel to cut away some soft plastic trim to fit around the hitch point, but at least for a CR-V even a pair of diagonal cutters would probably work just fine too.

Incidentally, we also installed a trailer brake light connection around the same time; the CR-V has a premade plug-and-play connection for this, so it was a very feasible 1-person install and well worth the extra safety. But I digress.

Strong recommendation from me for eTrailer if you're in need of an aftermarket trailer hitch!

Perfect fit. Slight shipping delay, but still good...especially for free. The only suggestion is to include a better schematic of where to cut out fascia.

Love it. Finish coating on hitch has proved to be durable. All hardware remains tight. Would buy again.

Perfect fit for the 2022 Honda CRV. Installation was straight forward with the included instructions and watching the installation video also helped. Overall, it took about an hour and a half to install.

by:
2018 Honda CR-V

Hitch delivered yesterday as scheduled and I finished installation this morning. The video installation instructions at etrailer extremely helpful . My CRV has only one muffler, so it was that much easier. I went ahead and pretrimmed the under body panel and that I think also made the installation easier. Didn’t have a hoist, so I blocked up the rear about 4 1/2 inches and that was enough. Even had my wife helped me slip the hitch in place and hold it while I fastened the nuts without yelling at each other. Be careful when remounting the rear muffler hanger as there are some sharp edges. Probably took me more than an hour, but that included gathering tools and blocking up the vehicle.

Comments
Don’t use it often, but works fine when I do. Very happy with it

Need to tell people in instructions that this cover needs to be removed to install hitch.

The video made it look easy. @75 it was a little harder.
The video was of a regular CRV not the Hybrid, which is what I was putting it on. Only one exhaust.Parts fit well.Nicely made and finished.

I chose the etrailer hitch for my 2018 Honda CRV because I preferred the matte finish and I wanted to support the company products.

This website is great! Very organized and easy to navigate. The company videos and photos are very helpful, and the customer photos and reviews are good guides too. Ordering was easy and the shipping was quick. I like that you show/credit your employees fulfilling the order.

The project time estimates seem a bit short for the first-time installation, but overall they are reasonable. The main reason it took me longer was because I installed the hitch alone. A few hints:
1. Read and understand all directions (including NOT pulling off the fish wires until AFTER the hitch is in place)
2. If you are installing the hitch alone placing the large bolt through the tow hook first will help hold the hitch while you screw around lining everything up.
3. Double check the measurements before cutting the facia as there were minor variations between what is published and what I saw on my vehicle.

Overall, I'm impressed with the products and support from etrailer.com!

by:

Hitch works great. I could not get it to secure suggly until I noticed that the OEM wire bundle was mounted right underneath where the hitch needed to me. I assumed it wasn't going to fit until I removed the wire and wire clip (then it fit right in!)

Honda

Using your online video, I was able to install the trailer hitch on my wife's 2021 Honda CR-V by myself. The unit looks factory-installed. My wife loves it. We use it all the time with our bicycle rack.

by:
2021 Honda CR-V

I had high hopes for etrailer based on the pictures and stories on the page for this model e98848. As soon as I pulled out the hitch I noticed lots or topical damage to the matte finish which I was surprised to see as the box was not damaged when it arrived. These were in places that if you dropped it in any fashion those areas would not be scraped like that. The hitch opening itself was scraped up too. As I was finally getting close to the end it became apparent that this was defective and one of the sides that connects to the frame was bent in significantly. One side near the exhaust was flush and the other must have been off by a quarter inch or more. This one was either repackaged or was just poor quality control. This thickness of steel does not bend out to squeeze it in. Project failed and hours wasted. If they send a replacement, I get to enjoy this process at least one more time.

Honda

I had this mounted onto my 2019 Honda CR-V to carry my bike rack (but I've also towed a trailer across the country with it.) Works great!

by:

Works good. This went on a hybrid CR-V and the lower panel won’t fit in its present state. Need instructions on cutting to make it fit. Should be able to make cover fit.

by:
2021 Honda CR-V

Reasonable price but there was a major issue with the fit. The bolt holes in the bracket on the passenger side of the vehicle were off by over an inch. I had to find a sturdy vise to bend the bracket. I had the hitch partially installed with the bolts lining up on the drivers side but off by over an inch on the passenger side. It is not a matter of sliding the hitch frame from driver to passenger side because the hitch frame is anchored in the center with the loop near the receiver. In the days it took me to find a vice strong enough to hold the hitch frame while I bent it, my garage got cleaned out and the hitch fasteners were accidentally discarded. I had to pay over $XX to get a new set of hardware. Additionally the bumper had to be cut out by an inch more than the directions specified in order for the hitch to fit. All total I have over 8 hours invested in getting the hitch installed.

by:

Only giving 4 stars right now because I haven’t installed it yet, having it done Monday. I’m having one of your recommended installers doing the work, All Roads who you’ve got listed as Fort Pierce when they’re actually in PSL. Seems like a really nice shop, they do a lot of true off road work. I’ll definitely bump you up to a 5 after it’s done.

by:

This is a sturdy, well-built trailer hitch. Unfortunately, it does NOT fit the 2020 Honda CR-V Touring edition as advertised. The problem is the hands-free tailgate sensor that gets in the way of the hitch. Honda makes a sensor adaptor, but the hitch still does not fit with the adaptor installed. I actually had to completely remove the sensor to install the hitch, and so now I wasted $XXX on a sensor adaptor, and my hand-free tailgate feature no longer works. I brought this to the attention of etrailer and disappointingly didn't receive any response.

Comments
I reached out to the manufacturer who advised that these hitches have been tested to work with the hands free lift gate through 2020. It could be that the antenna is unplugged or to kick to the left or right of the receiver tube a bit slower.

2021 Honda CR-V

Worked great. However, my mechanic who installed it had to trim my bumper (2021 Honda CR-V) to get it to fit. Cost me a little more for the installation but it was delivered on-time for a trip and I was able go for a couple of bike rides with my son as a result. Thanks, etrailer.

I love that the hitch is hidden except for the receiver. It was on back order, but I received it 2 weeks earlier than the expected date. I had my local auto body shop (Don's Auto Body in Castro Valley) install it and used it two days later for my bike rack going to Yosemite. Everything worked out beautifully. The etrailer rep helped me a lot on the phone explaining all the different options for my hitch. I am very happy with the etrailer hitch.

Comments
Very well. Still in good condition. I like that it is hidden and doesn’t hit on high curbs.

Once I got it installed it was crooked. I tried loosening everything and redoing it but the weird security loop on the frame prevented me from moving it too much. Pretty annoying all in all. Not sure if this is so much a problem with the hitch or with the car. Regardless this reflects my satisfaction with the hitch paired with my 2017 CR-V.

Comments
It can be hard to maneuver around that tow hook. You mention the word crooked, it would be very helpful to see photos of the hitch installed to help resolve this for you.

The trailer hitch receiver was of good quality and the installation was very easy. The perfect fit for my Honda CR-V

by:

Installation went much like the video. Had some trouble lining up the bolts on the frame rail. I pushed one bolt almost all the way into the frame rail. I used a magnet, put a socket over it with the nut. Magnet held the bolt until I was able to get the last nut started.

The hitch box was somewhat damaged but no apparent damage to the hitch. I’ll do the wire harness tomorrow.

Honda

I have a 2020 CRV Hybrid. Despite other reviews on here saying this hitch worked for the hybrid model, I was nervous since Honda specifically does not make a hitch for the hybrid. But a year in, I can say this hitch DOES fit/work, and I have had zero issues with it. Installed it myself with a friend of mine. Note: I’m only using it for a bike rack, no real towing. Very pleased with the purchase and would absolutely do it again.

Great question. The etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish part # e98848 does require trimming the lower rear fascia. The best tools to use to trim the panel are either tin snips or a dremel. You can either mark off your sections with tape or use chalk before cutting.
