Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

How to Manually Adjust Trailer Brakes

The more miles you put on your trailer, the more your brake pads will wear down. As they lose contact with the drum, stopping distances get longer and longer. To keep your brakes working great, it's important to adjust them pretty routinely. For this job, grab a floor jack and either a brake adjustment tool (sold separately) or just a standard flathead screwdriver.

Jack up your trailer enough to get the wheel(s) off the ground. Remove the adjuster plugs from the backing plate on the brake, and insert the flat end of the tool through the back of the assembly.

Screenshot from an instruction video shows how to manually adjust the the alignment on a drum brake

Push in on the star gear and lift it up. Keep doing this until the brake pads catch on your drum. When you can't spin your wheel by hand anymore, back the gear off by about 10 clicks by pushing down on the star gear. Does the wheel now spin freely (even if it sounds like the brake pads drag slightly on the drum)? Great! Then you're all done with that one and ready to adjust the rest.

How to Break In New Brakes

After you get these brakes installed and adjusted, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

Our 2021 Reflection 260rd 5th wheel gets used ALOT, that being said I will guess it has at least 4o,ooo plus miles.
While doing a wheel bearing inspection I noticed one corner brakeshad unusual wear on just one shoe and another corner had a leaking wheel seal that needed attention.
I placed an order for all four corners to replace all the backing plates and hardware, order came in as scheduled, I did the work and the brakes are back as good as new, very happy with the parts and prompt service.

I do a vehicle inspection after every longer camping trip and our last journey was to Wyoming. About 4500 miles in all, after the trip I did another roll around inspection, all good ,no adjustments needed.

by:

Original equipment, exact replacement for my Dexter 4400 lb axles. We're full time campers and my old ones had many, many miles on them. This was a really easy, do-it-yourself, job. 4 bolts and two wires and you're done. Etrailer had them in stock, shipped fast, no problems.

by:

This was an exact match for my 5th wheel. Not to hard to install and has worked well with no issues.

by:

They fit like a glove.

by:

oem part was excellent and direct bolt on

has been working great and no noise

by:

Working good!

by:

These brake kits are not normally stocked in most places but etrailer had them and at a good price. These kits made replacing my brakes a lot easier and they are still working great after a couple of long trips and many short ones.

by:

Worked great. Too bad this is the only option for this axle. Dexter has made it quite profitable for this axle versus the 3500 lbs axles.

by:

Etrailer was the only source I could find that had brake assemblies to fit my 3,500 lb axles. Thanks to them and overnight shipping we were on the road quickly.

by:

Awesome price, very quick delivery, carefully shipped and exact oe fit. Would even say better than original brake springs.

by:

Fast, efficent service and delivery. The parts were nust what we needed .

by:

Good product, but more information about installation would be helpful

Only received one set, when we ordered and paid for two sets.

  • Replacement Electric Brakes for 4,200 lb Axle on Coachmen Apex Nano Trailer
Though I would not be able to answer for parts that are on your trailer now, it is a good idea for your brakes to match your axle's weight capacity. As for a replacement, I could not find a reference to the brakes you have now, and the only replacements that fit a 10" x 2-1/4" drum have a 4-bolt mounting flange or a very specific 4-bolt flange with 2.83" x 2.83" spacing. Since the brake kit you referenced has a 4-bolt flange do you have 2.83" x 2.83" spacing or need a different size?

  • 10" Electric Trailer Brake Assemblies For 4,400LB Axles With 3-1/4" Lower Bolts and 2-7/8" Top Bolts
The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # K23-462-463-00 and Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # K23-478-479 for 4,400LB axles have a similar bolt pattern. They have 2-7/8" measured on the top 2 bolts and 3-1/4" spread on the bottom 2 bolts, so either the numbers got entered in the wrong order or someone may have flipped the axle rather than using the proper Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00. The brakes are still the 10" diameter by 2-1/4" wide.

It sounds like you need the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # K23-478-479 or Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # K23-462-463-00 for your 5th wheel trailer. These 10" x 2-1/4" brake assemblies are for 4,400lb axles and have a bolt mounting pattern of 2-7/8" on the top bolts, 3-1/4" on the bottom bolts and 3" from the top to the bottom bolts. • Replacement Trailer Brakes for Tandem 3,700 lb Axle Trailer
Trailer brakes can definitely wear faster depending on the style of driving and the terrain, but that sounds like excessive wear. You should get way more than 3,000 miles out of a set of brakes. With your axles you must be using the 4,400 lb assemblies instead of the 3,500 lb assemblies. For the replacements I recommend the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 4.4K # K23-478-479 or the manual assemblies # K23-462-463-00. • Recommended Dexter Electric Drum Brakes for 4000-lb Axles on 5th Wheel Trailer
We have electric drum brakes rated for 4400-lb axles (and hydraulic drum brakes rated for 3750- and 5200-lb axles) but none rated for exactly 4000-lbs. For electric drum brakes in the 10 x 2-1/4-inch size for a 5th wheel the 4400-lb-rated brakes will be fine. I suggest using Dexter kit # K23-462-463-00 which is a left- and right-hand set of manual-adjust brakes with the 4-bolt mounting pattern. These work with trailer wheels from 13- to 15-inches. When you install the new brakes either...
