CURT Trailer Brake Controller - C96YV

Highlights

  • Custom Fit for Your Vehicle: Works with your vehicle's existing wiring.
  • Smooth, controlled stops: Proportional braking syncs your trailer and tow vehicle for steady deceleration.
  • Clean, clutter-free cab: Compact unit mounts under the dash, keeping knees and airbags clear.
  • Control from your phone: Bluetooth and the OneControl app let you adjust output and sensitivity hands-free.
  • Tow different trailers easily: Save multiple trailer profiles for quick setup and consistent settings.
  • Fast, no-splice install: Plug-and-play harness and adhesive mount get you towing in minutes.

Features to know about

Clears Up Dash Space: Compact Under-Dash Design

Big brake boxes can clutter your interior and get in the way. The Echo Under-Dash keeps things clean by mounting its 3-3/8" long x 3" wide x 7/8" thick main unit out of sight behind the dashboard. You control everything from your phone, so there’s no bulky controller to hit your knees or spoil your dash layout. The hidden setup looks stock and leaves all the legroom you started with.

Controls Right From Your Phone: Bluetooth with OneControl App

Instead of knobs or extra wiring, the Echo connects to your smartphone over Bluetooth. Through the OneControl app, you can adjust max output, tweak sensitivity, or hit manual override—all right on the screen. The app works with both Apple (5.0 and newer) and Android (4.3 and newer), and once it’s paired, it keeps running even if your data connection drops. Everything you need for towing control stays right in your pocket.

Handles Heavy Loads Smoothly: Proportional Braking for Up to 4 Axles

Uneven braking can make towing stressful, especially when carrying a heavy trailer. The internal 3-axis accelerometer senses how hard you brake and sends matching power to the trailer’s brakes for smooth stops every time. It works with up to 4 axles (8 brake assemblies) and supports electric trailer brakes, keeping braking steady on everything from light loads to fully loaded rigs.

Installs Fast: Plug-and-Play Harness and Flexible Mounting

No splicing or cutting wires—just plug into the factory brake control port under the dash using the custom harness. Mount the box anywhere under the dash with the included adhesive pad or zip ties, then let it self-calibrate in seconds. The 3-axis design means it can sit at any angle and still deliver proper braking force once paired and ready to tow.

Perfect for Multiple Trailers: Saves Custom Profiles in the App

If you switch between trailers, you won’t have to reset anything. The app lets you save custom profiles for each trailer, including output and sensitivity settings. Just swipe through profiles when you hook up a new trailer and get on the road faster with consistent braking performance every time.

Specs

Application

  • Application: trailers with 1 to 4 axles (8 brake assemblies)
  • Compatible with: electric trailer brakes

Dimensions

  • Main unit dimensions: 3-3/8" long x 3" wide x 7/8" thick

Smart Device Requirements

  • Apple OS requirements: 5.0 and newer
  • Android OS requirements: 4.3 and newer

OneControl app interface for Curt Echo Under-Dash Bluetooth Brake Controller showing numbered callouts for manual override button, brake output indicator, max output, and sensitivity level.

  • 1. Manual Override: This big orange button in the middle of the app is your manual override. Press and hold the button, and the brake controller will smoothly apply the trailer brakes without applying your vehicle's brakes.
  • 2. Brake Output Indicator: The outer ring gives you a visual indicator of how much power is being applied to the trailer brakes. This is determined by your max output setting.
  • 3. Max Output: Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes.
  • 4. Sensitivity Level: This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the max output level.
  • 5. Vehicle Hazard Lights: If you turn on your vehicle's hazard lights, there's a chance the trailer brakes will pulse on and off as the lights flash.

Warranty

  • Brake controller warranty: Limited lifetime
  • Wiring harness warranty: Limited 1-year

Note

  • Bluetooth connection loss: If Bluetooth connection is lost, the brake controller will continue to function safely, using the most recently programmed settings. This brake controller is not compatible, but will not interfere, with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
  • 7-way plug installation kit: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake controller installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

What is Proportional Braking?

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

Excellent controller for my needs...fast shipping and a great price too! I read up on Progressive vs. Time Delay controllers; and for my needs I felt this Curt controller would be just fine. I just finished installing and adjusting the controller this morning.
We recently bought a '99 Coleman Westlake Pop-up that weighs about 2,400 lbs. dry (much less than my brake-less boat trailer) and wanted to take advantage of the brakes that came on the camper for when we travel in the SC & NC mountains camping. On level ground I have found the controller to be very responsive and easy to adjust. I am sure having working brakes in the mountains will be nice! As others have said, finding just the right place to mount the controller was the most difficult part. The "plug & play" adapter/harness was more than long enough to complete the installation. Oh, did I mention fast shipping too! I am another very satisfied etrailer.com Customer!

I was sent the incorrect "direct plug in" harness originally but after contacting etrailer they sent out the correct one. Everything works perfectly now.
The small rubber pieces that hold the brake controller to the mounting bracket instantly fell off and rolled away, not the best design. Other than that it is small and compact and works great!

As first time truck and pop-up trailer users, we initially purchased a cheaper brake controller that required drilling the dash. This is a new truck, so we decided to switch and spend more for the Bluetooth. etrailer was easy to work with for a return, and the Bluetooth brake controller is fantastic - so easy to use with our new trailer!

I really wanted a trailer brake controller that I didn’t have to stick an ugly knob/box hanging off my dash. This was my solution and it works perfectly. Plugged right into my Honda Ridgeline existing plug, and easily connected to the app on my phone. Nice setup.

This was my fourth order from etrailer and, as were the earlier ones, was delivered quickly. The instructions were clear and easy to follow and it took me only about 15 minutes to install the Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller with the wiring adapter for my 2012 Tundra. The white ground wire did not have to be grounded separately as it connects to a white ground wire in the adapter. I used Velcro on top of the controller and beneath the panel instead of the included bracket and can easily make adjustments without removing it. Adjusting the slides on top and the left side of the controller to get the desired braking action and a test drive to verify took another ten minutes. Great product.

Item worked great. It was able to connect with the Trailer Brake Controller and straight to my wiring harness in my truck. I couldn't have asked for a better installation! Thanks etrailer.com!!!

Mating harness is perfect. Well made, quality connectors, proper length, time saver, priced right, a no brainer. Buy it!!!!!

Great. This controller is very consistent in applying dependable braking while towing our travel trailer. After dozens of trips and thousands of miles the unit continues to do the job. Very satisfied.

by: Paul08/29/2022

I was looking for a trailer brake controller that did not require a permanent mounting to the dash or center console of my 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. I initially considered the wireless bluetooth controller from Curt Echo that plugs directly into the 7-pin outlet next to the tow hitch. However, reviews from individuals that tow RV trailers identified that particular option prevents the 12v battery on the trailer from charging off of the TV while connected. This would limit the RV utilization during long trips involving boondocking.
The Curt Echo under-dash controller seems to solve that problem and uses the same user interface as the Curt Echo.
Easy to install and operate; problem solved!

by: Michael 04/05/2023

Easiest install ever !
Plug and play.
App is easy understand and use.
My favorite is with the app and on selected active profile you can see the amount of brake amount is being applied to the trailer when the vehicle brakes are applied. I also install the manual override button. FYI: you don’t need the app on your phone open for the controller or the manual override button to work. Also another nice feature of the manual override button is the size about the size of a quarter, uses a CR2032 battery and the battery level is displayed in the app.

by: Ted05/31/2024

plug in to factory harness without cutting orvsplicing. saved a couple hours working under dash. worth the cost. unfortunatelt harness adapter, brake controller or some other fault is causing random trailer brake lock-up without applying vehicle brakes at highway speeds, a scary event. unable to troubleshoot as winter snow then heart health issue continue to prevent me from moving trailer to troubleshoot.

by: Jason08/20/2022

This wiring adapter fit perfect between the Curt Adventurer brake controller and the pigtail harness in my '06 Tundra. Remove the truck's driver side kick panel, cut the truck connector loose from where it was secured, and plug this adapter into both the truck and the brake controller. Plug and play.

Custom cable made my brake controller installation a simple project. Fit perfectly and took all stress out of the job. I would buy again without hesitation.

Yup, still working as supposed to. No complaints. Well worth the money.

by: James 12/19/2023

This was relatively easy to install under the dash of our 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, especially since ours has the factory Trailer Tow Package and therefore an existing pigtail connector ready to connect to the brake controller. The Curt wiring adapter made it super easy to connect the Brake Controller to the vehicle's wiring harness. The controller was easy to calibrate and worked seamlessly while we're towing a rented trailer. We used a dedicated (older) cell phone to operate it while we're towing to avoid any potential interference from other apps rather than using our regular phone on which we receive phone calls texts, etc. This was our first time towing a trailer and this easy-to-use Brake Controller helped make us feel safe and comfortable. Highly recommended.

I’ve owned 5 brake controllers. This is the only one I’ve disliked. This controller has non digital controls (should have been my first clue it might not be good) it just has two slide controls. Problem is two things, the slide controls themselves are black, the same color as the case on the unit and you can’t even see the position of the slide controls because they blend in with the color of the case. It’s impossible to tell if they’re turned down all the way, turned up all the way, in the middle? The other problem is that the slides are so imprecise, They slide way too easily and there’s no detents and I found if you even bump the unit slightly or are going over rough roads the slide switches migrate. I was towing a couple of weeks ago and I thought I had the switches dialed in as good as I could, I was on some rough roads, due to road construction in the area, the output switch vibrated over to maximum and the next time I hit the brakes , the trailer locked up completely. So I had to turn it off until I could get to the next town where there was a parking lot I could readjust. I’m definitely getting rid of this thing and I definitely recommend you do not buy it. Buy something with digital output controls so you know precisely where the settings are. I firmly believe this controller is dangerous and I know if I keep using it I’m going to get an accident.

Teconsha P3 is an excellent brake controller.

by: Ed D01/19/2015

Well that was the easiest thing I've ever done on a vehicle. The info on the etrailer site was instrumental in this being a quick plug-n-play mount of the Curt brake controller. I watched the two minute video and 10 minutes later I had a new brake controller installed in my 2010 Tundra.

by: Alan03/12/2024

Do not buy either the Curt Under-Dash or plug-in Wireless brake controllers until Lippert fixes the phone app. I’ve used both happily with the old ECHO Smart Control app. I could use the remote manual button with the phone app not even running. As one would reasonably expect the button talked to the controller directly via Bluetooth. The new OneControl Auto app must be running and in the foreground to use the manual remote! And the most recent version of ECHO Smart Control is non-functional, it just tells you to install OneControl Auto.

by: Matthew 11/25/2023

The break controller worked seamlessly. Profiles are easy to set up and it has very reliable Bluetooth connectivity with my phone. Installation was really easy on my Honda Pilot!

  • Wiring Brake Controller to Under Dash Wiring of 2021 Ford Ranger

I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller # RED44FR for your 2022 Ram 2500. This will connect with the Plug and Play Wiring Harness # 331-TPH-020 to the under dash connector. I prefer this controller over the Curt Echo # C27JR with the Adapter # C51458 and factory options as it gives you more adjustability and is easily controlled with the dash mounted control knob. While the Curt is easy to install you have to control everything from your smart phone including adjusting braking...

The first place I would start is with the Curt Custom Wiring Adapter # C51362 that you have connected between the Curt Spectrum Trailer Brake Controller # C51170 and your 2014 Toyota Tacoma. The red light that you are getting when the brakes are pressed indicates that the red wire that connects to the brake switch is either connected to the ground side of the switch or there is a short to ground. I do believe that you have a ground wire issue. The Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter 3040-P...
