Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

  • Modern Size Replacements Needed for 7.00 x 14 Tires on Boat Trailer
The closest modern tire size to the 7.00 x 14 size you mentioned would be a ST205/75-14. The two load range C tires we offer are part # AM1ST86 in bias ply and # AM10234 in radial. The ST205/75-14 is about an inch larger in diameter and 3/4 of an inch wider than the tires you currently have. The load range C bias ply tire in that size is rated for 1,760 lbs at 50 psi. The radial is rated a bit higher at 1925lbs at 60 psi. For optimal tire performance and to realize the full load bearing...

  • Solution for Trailer Wheel that Has Lower PSI Rating Than Tire
Dexstar wheels are not typically limited to only being able to handle 50 psi, if there is a limit that low on a wheel it's almost always the valve stem as typically the wheel is the highest rated pressure rated component. For a higher rated valve stem we have the metal # AM20906 which can handle over 100 psi and fits the two wheel hole sizes on trailer wheels of .453 and .625 inch. If you had a limited tire pressure situation this would solve it, but most likely you'd be fine as Kenda...

  • Should I replace My Castle Rock ST ST205/75R14 Tires
This type of question is always challenging due to the amount of varying opinions, different experiences, and lack of controlled environment with set standards. Please keep in mind that Castle Rock is an economy trailer tire so they will not perform at the same level of a Goodyear tire. However, feed back available to me was a statement of a 7,500 mile trip with great performance and no significant wear. But your 12,000 mile trip will be pushing the limit on most any economy tire currently...

  • Replacement 7 Spoke Aluminum Trailer Wheel for Aluma Trailer
We have an aluminum 7 spoke 14 inch trailer wheel that looks pretty close to the wheel in the picture you sent us, but it's not an exact match. For that wheel you would want the part # AM22329. For a 205/75R14 you can use # AM10234 or tire # AM10229 for a ST215/75R14.

  • Radial vs Bias Trailer Tires and Can the Same Wheels Be Used for Both Types of Tires
The same wheels can be used for both bias and radial tires. You do not need different wheels for radial tires. The tire you have now that is labeled ST205/75D14 is a bias tire because the D inside the tire size means diagonal or bias ply construction. A radial trailer tire will be labeled as ST205/75R14. The R inside the tire size meaning radial construction. The trailer specification of ST205/75C14 is meaning you can use a bias or radial with a Load Range C rating. Normally on a tire...

  • Clearance Needed For ST205/75R14 Trailer Tire on Trailer & How to Tell if New Axle isNeeded
Hey Russell, You should have at least 2 inches (but ideally 3 inches) of clearance between the top of a fully inflated tire like the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10234 and the bottom of your wheel well or fender. As for the axle, check for rust, any small cracks, poor handling by your trailer compared to how it had been, and things like your tires wearing unevenly or faster than they had. If you find yourself needing a new axle, I'll add a link below to a video on how to...

The tire size F78-14ST is the same as the modern tire size of 205/75-14 like the part # AM32131 which comes on a 5 lug wheel. Then for just a tire in this size you would want the part # AM10234.

  • Replacing 175/80R14 Trailer Tires
I can certainly point you in the right direction. A 175/80-R14 is fairly uncommon these days, but we do have options for replacing them. A 175/80-R14 has a diameter of 25" and is about 6.9" wide. The best replacement we can offer will be the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias trailer tire # AM3S331. This has a diameter of 24.4" and is 7.2" wide. So you will be losing .6" of diameter and adding .3" of width. I imagine this will fit very nicely in the current fender area, and you will stay very close...

  • Can Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire Be Inflated to 50 PSI
The tag on your trailer listing 50 psi would be for the stock 205/75R14 tires. I'm sure the max psi for those tires was 50. You should always inflate your trailer tires to the max psi as indicated by the tire manufacturer. The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10234 max psi is 60 which gives you a max load of 1,925 lbs. Inflating them to 50 psi would give you an unknown capacity. You can still use these on your trailer, you just need to inflate them to 60 psi instead of 50.

  • Recommended 205/75-14 Tire For a Utility Trailer With 3,500LB Axle
I recommend the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10234 for your utility trailer with the 3,500lb axle. This is a load range C tire and is what I run on my similar 3,500lb utility trailer. The radial construction provides better road handling characteristics and tread life. We do have it as a wheel and tire Package # AM32131 to fit a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern if you need a spare or are replacing the wheels along with the tires.

  • Can a Bias Ply Spare Tire Be Used On a Trailer When Switching to Radial Tires?
You can keep a bias ply spare tire after you switch to Radial # AM10234 tires on your aluminum utility trailer. Since it is only a spare you will not have to worry about the long term differences in wear between the bias and radial tires.

  • Availability of ST205/75R14 Trailer Tires In a Load Range E or F
Currently we only carry a Load Range C # AM10234(1,925lbs) and D # AM10235(2,200lbs) in the ST205/75R14. I've never seen tires this size with a higher capacity as it typically involves needing a larger axle to carry the capacity of larger wheels and tires. You would need to go up to the ST225/75R15 # AM10303 to get up to a load range E tire. This tire is rated for 2,830lbs per tire. You would need to get a larger wheel and ensure you have enough room for the larger trailer. If you can send...

  • What Does Load Range Letters (B, C, D) Indicate On a Tire?
The load range C and D indicate how many ply layers the tire is constructed of. A load range c tire like the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10234 has 6 layers. These layers give the tire a weight rating of 1,925lbs at 60psi. The load range D version of the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10235 has 8 layers. The additional layers give it a weight rating of 2,200lbs at 75psi. The additional layers allow for more weight and higher PSI as it makes the tire stronger....

  • Determining Tire Pressure Required For a Load Range C Trailer Tire
For the correct tire pressure for your tire you will want to check the sidewall of the trailer tire. A tire like the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10062 does have a recommended cold tire pressure of 90psi and is rated load range C with a weight capacity off 990lbs. A tire like the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10234 that is also a load range C only requires 60psi.

  • How Old Are the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tires That Ship Out
I don't have a way to provide the exact date code for any one set of tires that we ship but I can tell you that trailer tires are a top product for use and we sell a lot of them. This means that they don't sit on the shelf long in our warehouse once they leave the manufacturer, especially for common sizes like a 205/75-14. Therefore, it's very likely that the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10234 will be under a year old. I would also like to point out our warehouse is...

  • Is the Replacement Wheel # DM11574 from Demco the OEM Wheel for the Kar Kaddy SS Tow Dolly
The Replacement Wheel # DM11574 is an exact replacement for the chrome wheel on the Demco Kar Kaddy SS Tow Dolly (9713045) so it would be considered an OEM piece. Good morning, Mark. I can definitely try to point you in the right direction. Most of the Demco car trailers use a unique wheel. • Can ST205/75R14 Load Range C TIres Be Replaced With Load Range D
A higher load range within the same tire size means a higher ply rating which also means a higher capacity. The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM10234 has a maximum load of 1,925 lbs at 60 psi. The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10235 has a max load of 2,200 lbs at 75 psi. The tire dimensions are the same so you can certainly upgrade from a C to a D. This will also mean your tires run a little cooler so they will last longer.

  • Are Larger Wheels Beneficial to Trailer?
Slightly larger wheels will not have a bearing on your trailer in terms of gas consumption or wear and tear. It fits 14" x 5", 14" x 5-1/2", 14" x 6", and 14" x 6-1/2" wheels, has a load range of C with a maximum capacity of 1,925 lbs at 60 psi, and an 81 mph speed...

Yes, the narrower ST205-75R14 tire will fit in place of an ST215-75R14, It is important for all of the trailer tires to be the same size and construction type (bias ply or radial). Using different sizes can cause tracking problems and lead to premature and/or uneven tire wear. Ideally you would replace all of the tires at the same time. There is a difference in width for the ST215-75R14 (8.4") # AM10234 and the ST205-75R14 (7.8") ex: # AM1ST86. You can replace all tires with the ST205-75R14,...
