Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Second tire/wheel combo from etrailer! First spare became replacement for a major blowout rolling down I95 NY to Florida. South Carolina I95 so bad, parts are coming off semi trucks. Missed with my truck, but cut tire down to wheel on tread and both side walls. Having the first etrailer spare ready was super! I did try to find the Karrier tire locally, but ended up back at etrailer. Fast delivery, great price and now with a new spare! Great job you guys.

Great tire wheel combo has went from spare to in service. Ordered another recently to go into standby position. As trailer tires for our boat have exploded, went out of round, we have replaced them at etrailer. etrailer has provided many tires and other products for us and all have performed perfectly! Delivery even faster than the big A. Great job...!

I did an axle over/under conversion and added these new wheels and tires. The galvanizing isn't the prettiest, but they look fine. They have performed well. With about 4500 miles on them, they still look good and perform perfectly.

Great price, service and free shipping! I used them on my boat trailer on a trip from north Idaho to Alaska. No problems and they worked great!!!

Drove my boat trailer, with these tires and wheels, from Idaho to Alaska without a problem and still going strong

Quick, quality purchase as always. Got this for our boat trailer spare for the trip to North Fort Myers Florida for the winter. We will be wintering in our NY house. North Fort home was totaled by hurricane Ian. Prayers up for all our Florida friends and neighbors. Many lost their primary homes. Be Strong Florida. America is pulling for you!

exactly what i ordered !!! beautiful.

PAUL R - 10/24/2022

The tire arrived . After unboxing it I noticed an ugly heavy bead of solder on the back of it . If I was picky I would be unhappy but it’s a trailer tire and it is fine .

Exact match as a new spare for our Loadmaster boat trailer. The Kenda tire brand has an excellent manufacturer's warranty - any type of damage within first year mfgr. offers a free replacement. The price for the tire and wheel combo was excellent. Arrived two days ahead of schedule; perfectly packaged. It's a No brainer -- just call etrailer!!!! Also, be sure to ask for Quinn F. In my experience, he's an excellent salesperson; mainly friendly and very knowledgeable about the parts they sell.

The packaging and shipping time was great. However, the wheels look like they had started to rust and then painted over. I didn’t expect the wheels to appear to have rust before they were removed from the boxes.

Thank you for your review! If you are concerned about the wheel rusting, I just wanted to share a link to an article with tips and tricks to prevent rust. And I also wanted to note that the galvanized finish can have a rough or uneven texture to it which may explain the texture you are seeing. I hope this helps!

I bought a Loadstar 205/75R14 Radial tire/galvanized wheel assembly along with a U-Bolt type attachment as a spare for my aluminum trailer. I've had good luck with the quality of etrailer items so far and didn't want a cheaper spare tire from an unknown/fake lable manufacturer that you can sometimes get from a certain prime warehouse outfit on the internet. It all seems good but hopefully won't have to find out how good the tire is anytime soon. I do love the photos of the folks at etrailer who process the order as well as the map visual of the shipping progress. A nice touch and shows the attention to detail and quality etrailer gives to their product, services, and customers. Thanks

These trailer tires have performed excellent over the last year of travel and they still look brand new. We have taken our 5,000lbs boat all across Illinois and Wisconsin without an incident. I am much more confident trailering our boat with these new tires.

I don't use my trailer much as i keep my boat at a local Marina...However; i do use once a year to take my boat with us on vacation.

So after several years of traveling w/ no spare; i decided to get a spare tire. The Tire and Rim showed up today (fully inflated) matches the other tires on the trailer exactly and on time, bolted on the bracket and i'm ready for the road.

Angela at etrailer help me with the order to insure i ordered and received the exact tire and rime i needed.

Thank You

Have these on my boat trailer. Great tires, no complaints.

Great tires and rims at a reasonable pr ice!

Horrible experience with this company! Will not be shopping ever again and I warn others to think twice before they shop with this company. Ordered a tire from this company, paid significantly more to purchase from here, but I did it because I needed it by a specific date. Well the tire came and it was the wrong tire. Called customer service and since we needed the tire by a certain date I asked them to please overnight it and they told me that they could not afford to do that. They told me I could pay over $xxx to have them ship it. Well, I'm sorry, but that is not my fault that you sent me the wrong tire. A reputable company would get that tire out asap when the mistake was on them. I asked to speak with a manager and the rep on the phone told me that the manager would tell me the same thing and wouldn't connect me to a manager. So I asked again to speak with a manager. I was put on hold for quite some time just to be told that the manager was busy and they would call us right back. guessed it, we haven't heard anything back from the company and we need this tire in 2 days.

I ordered two mounted tires and wheels and two Fulton spare tire carriers. The tires were shipped in two different boxes. The spare tire carriers were put one each in the box containing the tire/wheels. When I opened the boxes, both of the spare tire carrier packages had come open in transit and the contents were scattered inside the tire boxes. One was fine and all parts were there and in the second, the keys for the spare tire carrier lock were missing. I called etrailer and told the representative, Ericka, what occurred. They were super helpful, professional and friendly. etrailer is sending me a replacement. Fantastic customer service! I highly recommend this company!

Tires and rims arrived earlier than expected. Shawnee was a great help and followed up with information I didn’t expect. I feel she went well out of her way. Great experience.

Love these tires. After 15 years of running smaller passenger tires, I finally have been able to stop worrying about blow outs. The rims look great and the tires run cool with little sway. Thousand mile trips no longer give me worry.

I ordered 4 of these for my boat trailer to replace the old tires/ wheels for safety sake and piece of mind.
---you are most likely buying this for its low price. Tire dealers in my area could not even come close to etrailer's price on this tire/wheel combo with the free shipping deal
----Most trailer tires are made in China, this one is no exception.
----I liked that the DOT date code on the tires shipped to me was with the last few months.

---One of the rims was bent when I got it. I believe it was a manufacturing defect. The good news is that the return and exchange with etrailer was very easy. Unfortunately the replacement wheel/tire they sent me was bent as well. So they processed a 2nd return for me and sent me a replacement.
I think the quality control on the 'stamping' or fabricating of the wheels is lacking. So I would ask that customers check the wheels on receiving them.

almost 3 years later and no problems at all with these tires and wheels

Nice tires/wheels (tires manufactured 37th week of 2021). Delivered 6 days early! This my second time ordering 4 wheels and tires from etrailer. The old tires/wheels are still in good shape but 4 years is my limit of use on the boat trailer -changing a tire 3ft off the road with interstate/turnpike traffic flying by is something I will try to avoid. Very convenient and worth the money to have tires already mounted delivered to my door.

Looks good for my spare on boat trailer, price good for tire and wheel combo.

I received the two trailer tires pretty quick, they look great
.I haven't hit the interstate with them yet to see how they do but so far I am happy with the purchase and customer service.

I was looking for a reasonably priced spare tire for my boat trailer, which previously didn't have a spare. had exactly what I was looking for. I received the product a day ago, and it looks great! This tire will serve me well and provide me with big peace of mind as I'm trailering my boat around.

The tire was delivered before it's due date. It's a great looking tire and has a better LB load rating than the tires I have bought locally. I am putting it on my boat trailer so I hope it will perform well.

Very happy I ordered two tires and rims it came pretty quick very satisfied

I wanted larger tires and wheels on my UTV Trailer as I felt that the 13" tires that came on the trailer were inadequate. While shopping online I came across the website. It was very easy to compare various tire and wheel combinations and find the one that was right for me. The product pricing was very competitive with other online tire stores but the free shipping is what made me choose I ordered 3 Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tires mounted on 14" Galvanized Wheels. The 3 tire/wheel combos showed up on my doorstep 4 business days later and were undamaged, neatly packaged in individual tire boxes. I installed the 14" tires on my UTV Trailer today and am very pleased with the results. The new tires did make my trailer ride higher so it was necessary for me to adjust the Ball Mount on the back of my motorhome so that the trailer tows level. I have some long trips planned in the near future so I will be able to assess the performance of the Karrier tires as the miles accumulate.

  • What Causes Frequent Tire Blow Outs on a 10K Holiday Rambler Presidential 5th Wheel Trailer
Normally you would use the tire size recommended by the trailer manufacturer with the proper capacity for the gross trailer weight. Trailer tires can blow for a few reasons. It basically boils down to heat though, the number 1 enemy of a tire. How does a tire get too hot? One way is overloading the tires by carrying more weight than they are designed to handle. Most people never reach the gross trailer weight capacity so this is not as common as you might think on travel trailers. Heat...

  • Difference Between Trailer Tire Size 205/75R15 and 205/75D15
Based on the tire sizes you listed you went from a radial tire to a bias ply tire of the same size. As long as all of the tires on your trailer are of the same construction you would be just fine. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel...

  • Can Bias and Radial Tires be Used at the Same Time on a Trailer
You should not mix bias and radial tires on any trailer. It would only be OK if it was an emergency situation, like getting a flat, and you just needed to get to a place to replace the flat tire. The problem is that the two different types will wear unevenly, it can cause tracking problems, suspension issues if left unchecked, and one tire can heat up more than the other leading to eventual failure. If you have the option of both radial or bias in the size and load range you need then...

The speed rating you mention of "L" allows a max of 75 mph and the "M" tires allows a max of 81 mph. If you use these different speed rated tires and don't exceed 75 mph I don't foresee an issue since it's the same tire size and as long as the load range is also the same.
