Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I Purchased four tires for my 20 foot travel trailer. The price was great and I receive the tires within days of my order. I had them put on my vehicle and they are great. Overall experience I would give five stars. Thank you very much 599494

- AM32156

I wanted larger tires and wheels on my UTV Trailer as I felt that the 13" tires that came on the trailer were inadequate. While shopping online I came across the etrailer.com website. It was very easy to compare various tire and wheel combinations and find the one that was right for me. The product pricing was very competitive with other online tire stores but the free shipping is what made me choose etrailer.com. I ordered 3 Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tires mounted on 14" Galvanized Wheels. The 3 tire/wheel combos showed up on my doorstep 4 business days later and were undamaged, neatly packaged in individual tire boxes. I installed the 14" tires on my UTV Trailer today and am very pleased with the results. The new tires did make my trailer ride higher so it was necessary for me to adjust the Ball Mount on the back of my motorhome so that the trailer tows level. I have some long trips planned in the near future so I will be able to assess the performance of the Karrier tires as the miles accumulate. 437066

I bought this tire and galvanized wheel assembly along with a Fulton bracket to use as a spare tire on my boat trailer. The price was the best I could find and the total was just enough to get me free shipping. Awesome! Speaking of shipping, etrailer provided tracking details on the order so I new when to expect delivery. The whole process from web-order to delivery took just five days. Once I received the parts, install took less than half an hour and it looks great! 53260

Delivered In 4 days as schedule for my locations. Rims look nice however the galvanize coating could use some refinement. The tires are a big improvement, no road noise and feel great in tow. Excellent buy would differently recommend this tire package for boat owners. 617488

Have put over 4k on my trailer in the last year and the tires are great. Many thanks! 698075

- AM32156

The order process was great and shipping was fast. However, upon receiving the 3 tires on July 11, 2018, I noticed that the tire sidewalls were cupped (indented) in spots. I called etrailer customer service, who requested that I send them pictures. I sent pictures immediately after the phone call. After a few days I got an email informing me that the indent on the sidewall would not affect the tire. I sent two emails asking for a reason why the sidewalls were cupped and got no reply. On July 18, 2018, I called etrailer and asked the same question. They told me that the tires could be under inflated or over inflated. I checked the tire pressure and all tires were inflated with the correct pressure. I read on a tire manufacturer website that sidewall cupping could indicate the steel belt on the sidewalls could be defective. I do not know much about tires, so I am worried about the cupping on the sidewalls. Without knowing if the tires are defective, it's difficult to give a good review rating for these tires. 543108

According to Americana, the indent you describe is where the belt overlaps itself causing the rubber to dimple inward somewhat. The dimple is not anything to be concerned about and will not affect the performance of the tire. The indent does not involve the tread, so it will not affect the ride quality or the safety of the tire.

I bought a Loadstar 205/75R14 Radial tire/galvanized wheel assembly along with a U-Bolt type attachment as a spare for my aluminum trailer. I've had good luck with the quality of etrailer items so far and didn't want a cheaper spare tire from an unknown/fake lable manufacturer that you can sometimes get from a certain prime warehouse outfit on the internet. It all seems good but hopefully won't have to find out how good the tire is anytime soon. I do love the photos of the folks at etrailer who process the order as well as the map visual of the shipping progress. A nice touch and shows the attention to detail and quality etrailer gives to their product, services, and customers. Thanks 857087

As usual, this ETrailer purchase arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Kendra tires are not made in the US, but are made in Taiwan, which produces good products. Cannot give 5 stars for a trailer tire that I can't actually test until I get a flat (and I hope I do not get a flat). Will need to investigate now whether it needs to be balanced locally…my guess is yes. Will look at the American-made Goodyear tires when I replace the main trailer tires. 853284

So after several years of traveling w/ no spare; i decided to get a spare tire. The Tire and Rim showed up today (fully inflated) matches the other tires on the trailer exactly and on time, bolted on the bracket and i'm ready for the road. • Recommended Spare Tire for Yamaha SX230 Boat Trailer
There are three things you need to look for when choosing a spare tire for your trailer and that is a radial ply, load range c rating, and 205/75-14 size. The least expensive spare wheel/tire combo we have that meets the above and comes with a galvanized wheel is the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Galvanized Wheel part # AM32156. The least expensive spare wheel/tire combo we have that meets the above and comes with a silver wheel is the Contender ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer...

The next size up from an ST175/80-13 is an ST185/80-13 and they do both use the same size wheels. You can go up to the ST185/80-13 as long as you have enough clearance all around the existing tires. The larger size will only be about 0.3 inches taller so that is not going to be an issue. The width is only going to be 0.4 inches wider so it is not likely going to be a problem either. But it never hurts to check ahead of time! • Why Go to a Larger Wheel and Tire on a Bass Boat

  • Can I Use a Smaller Size Spare Tire On a Boat Trailer with 14 Inch Wheels
The same dynamics for passenger tires are not applicable for trailer's. Therefore, I do not recommend using a smaller tire on your trailer as a spare. The spare tire on a vehicle is mainly designed to get you to the nearest repair station. The nearest repair station most likely has the correct replacement tire for your car but not your trailer. Therefore you will be forced to either have the trailer sit idle until one has arrives or you can use a full size spare. There are much greater...

To do this, I recommend looking at an ST205/75-14 size tire. This tire size will have an overall diameter of 26.3 inches and a width of 8.1 inches. This is compared to the 24 inch diameter and 6.9 inch width on your current 175/80R13 tires. This means that the top of the new tire...
