Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The packaging and shipping time was great. However, the wheels look like they had started to rust and then painted over. I didn’t expect the wheels to appear to have rust before they were removed from the boxes.

Thank you for your review! If you are concerned about the wheel rusting, I just wanted to share a link to an article with tips and tricks to prevent rust. And I also wanted to note that the galvanized finish can have a rough or uneven texture to it which may explain the texture you are seeing. I hope this helps!

I bought a Loadstar 205/75R14 Radial tire/galvanized wheel assembly along with a U-Bolt type attachment as a spare for my aluminum trailer. I've had good luck with the quality of etrailer items so far and didn't want a cheaper spare tire from an unknown/fake lable manufacturer that you can sometimes get from a certain prime warehouse outfit on the internet. It all seems good but hopefully won't have to find out how good the tire is anytime soon. I do love the photos of the folks at etrailer who process the order as well as the map visual of the shipping progress. A nice touch and shows the attention to detail and quality etrailer gives to their product, services, and customers. Thanks

- AM32156

Shipping was fast and the tire and rim are quality

- AM32156

Great price, great quality and fast service and shipping. This is the best and only place to buy tires and trailer gear. The price I paid for two tires and wheels was less than I paid for a single tire I needed when one went flat on my last trip to lake Mead. Now with two spares I am no longer a victim of the " only tire shop open " Thank you .

- AM32156

Great price, service and free shipping! I used them on my boat trailer on a trip from north Idaho to Alaska. No problems and they worked great!!!

- AM32156

The spare was everything that I expected. I have aluminum wheels on my trailer but could not get myself to spend $250+ on a spare so I bought a galvanized version at $150. It looks great and saved me $$$$. Shipping was fast and it arrived undamaged, (yes I know it's just a spare but...).

- AM32156

Ordered on Thursday afternoon as a spare tire for my boat trailer. It arrived on Saturday. And saved my you know what on Sunday, when I blew a tire out. Etrailers outstanding service saved me! Great service, great price. Just ordered 3 more, to change all my trailers tires over

- AM32156

Wheels & Tires were exactly as described, they were am exact match for my boat trailer, and all I had to do was put them on. Shipping was very fast and they arrived at my door when they said. I would buy again

- AM32156

Good price with free shipping, we'll have to see how Karrier holds up. It's replacing a Tow Max (bought elsewhere) that blew out (wire everywhere) in less than 5 years and about 6,800 miles - that was always kept at proper pressure and ran at ~75% rated load. My 18 year old Kendra bias spare made 120 miles home.

- AM32156

Complete wheel and tire were order for use as a spare tire so haven’t used it yet. Order process was quick and easy. Product came as described and arrived as quoted. Very pleased has always has been, with etrailer

- AM32156

I ordered 4 of these for my boat trailer to replace the old tires/ wheels for safety sake and piece of mind. ---you are most likely buying this for its low price. Tire dealers in my area could not even come close to etrailer's price on this tire/wheel combo with the free shipping deal ----Most trailer tires are made in China, this one is no exception. ----I liked that the DOT date code on the tires shipped to me was with the last few months. Problems: ---One of the rims was bent when I got it. I believe it was a manufacturing defect. The good news is that the return and exchange with etrailer was very easy. Unfortunately the replacement wheel/tire they sent me was bent as well. So they processed a 2nd return for me and sent me a replacement. I think the quality control on the 'stamping' or fabricating of the wheels is lacking. So I would ask that customers check the wheels on receiving them.

almost 3 years later and no problems at all with these tires and wheels

The tires and wheels I purchased were a godsend, they have great wear pattern, and look great as well, am Blessed beyond measure, will definitely buy from etrailer again

I have used my trailer more than 40 times in the past year along with many maximum loads and my tires and wheels are still like brand new, with no issues whatsoever

I needed a spare tire for a recent blow out on my boat trailer, I came across this website after price matching with [other online vendor] and etrailer was priced right in line with [other online vendor] only etrailer promised and got me the tire much faster. It’s nice to see companies like this up and running and fulfilling their online orders when everyone else in the country seems to have what they sell you on hold.

- AM32156

I wanted larger tires and wheels on my UTV Trailer as I felt that the 13" tires that came on the trailer were inadequate. While shopping online I came across the etrailer.com website. It was very easy to compare various tire and wheel combinations and find the one that was right for me. The product pricing was very competitive with other online tire stores but the free shipping is what made me choose etrailer.com. I ordered 3 Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tires mounted on 14" Galvanized Wheels. The 3 tire/wheel combos showed up on my doorstep 4 business days later and were undamaged, neatly packaged in individual tire boxes. I installed the 14" tires on my UTV Trailer today and am very pleased with the results. The new tires did make my trailer ride higher so it was necessary for me to adjust the Ball Mount on the back of my motorhome so that the trailer tows level. I have some long trips planned in the near future so I will be able to assess the performance of the Karrier tires as the miles accumulate.

- AM32156

I bought this tire and galvanized wheel assembly along with a Fulton bracket to use as a spare tire on my boat trailer. The price was the best I could find and the total was just enough to get me free shipping. Awesome! Speaking of shipping, etrailer provided tracking details on the order so I new when to expect delivery. The whole process from web-order to delivery took just five days. Once I received the parts, install took less than half an hour and it looks great!

- AM32156

Actually I am very impressed with the quality of this rim/tire combo; I purchased 5 to have a spare for my trailer, already installed them and put the trailer in service. Thanks much not only for a quality product but also a quick delivery. Dan

- AM32156

these tires and rim's are real nice quality. couldn't beat the price elswhere and free shipping was awsome! i had my tires in three days! will use you again!

- AM32156

Delivered on time and as described. Have three of these tires-two for the trailer and one spare. I travel quite a bit with the trailer, an E-Z Loader with an 18' boat on it. Several trips over 100 miles this summer and had zero issues. Galvanized finish stands up great after two seasons of salt water launches. Pic is of one of these tires after two years of use.

- AM32156

Shipped quickly, arrived safely, as described. Excellent quality. Great peace of mind knowing I have a spare on the trailer.

- AM32156

Easy to order, deliver on time, competitive price. To be used as a spare for my boat trailer.

- AM32156

I mounted these on a boat trailer for a 17ft center console boat. These tires replaced the 175/80/14 bias tires that had started to dry-rot. I’ve towed the boat a couple times now and the larger tires seem to be smoother on rough roads, potholes ect. Kenda seems to have a good reputation, time will tell about the reliability.

- AM32156

Very fast delivery, good pricing, free shipping and freshly manufactured tires. Galvanizing on rims could be a little less rough but overall decent product.

- AM32156

Fair price and order was fulfilled quickly. This is how I’ll buy my trailer tires from now on. Great job!!

- AM32156

Nice upgrade to the old girl. These replaced the 195/75/14's that were on the trailer. Had to add some washers to get the spacing right for the fenders since these are a bit larger but no big deal. Very happy!!!

- AM32156

Tire and wheel received was what I was looking for. Received order very fast .

  • Picking Between Radial and Bias Ply Trailer Tires for Boat Trailer ST205/75-14
Radial tires are superior to bias ply tires for highway use so I would go with the # AM32156 that you referenced. Radial tires flex more, which provides better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler than a bias ply tire, and since cooler tires last longer, radials generally outlast bias ply tires. At one time, radials were more costly than their bias ply counterparts, but that's changed, and the two types are now similar in price. Radial...

Also, if you plan on towing a lot we would urge you to use only radial tires. I have included a FAQ on trailer tires for you to check out.

  • Replacement Trailer Wheel and Tire Recommendation for Size ST195/75R14
Your tire size of ST195/75D14 is very unusual so we aren't going to have an ideal spare. The closest size we have would be 205/75-14 like the part # AM32156 that you referenced. In a pinch this would get you home, but ideally you swap all of your trailer wheels with this and then use an additional one as a spare.

  • What is the Difference Between ST175/80D13 Tires and ST175/80R13 Trailer Tires
The D in 175/80D-13 indicates that it is a bias ply tire where as the R in 175/80r-13 indicates that it is a radial tire. The difference is how the steel belts inside are oriented. Bias ply tires are generally better in off road types of situations. Radial tires track better and run cooler. You do not want to mix the different construction types because that can lead to uneven wear and decreased ride quality. Each type of tire will have a load range such as # AM10210 which is a radial...

  • What is Difference Between Trailer Tire Sizes ST205/75R14 and P205/75R14
The difference between the two tire sizes is the application the tire was intended for. Tire sizes that start with ST are intended for use on trailers and tire sizes that start with P are designed for passenger vehicles. You shouldn't mix the applications as the tires are designed differently for their intended applications. If you have a trailer you are looking for a wheel and tire for you should stick with an ST205/75R15 size like the part # AM32156 that you referenced. This setup is...

  • Can a Mix of Bias Ply and Radial Trailer Tires be Used at the Same Time
For a short distance, you can use radial and bias tires at the same time, but you would not want to have the mix for long distances or periods of time. The problem is that the 2 different tires track and perform differently and this can affect ride quality and increase wear on the tires. For a bias ply tire, load range D, 175/80-13, use # AM1ST77. For the same tire on a 5 on 4-1/2 inch galvanized 13 inch wheel use # AM31242. I have included a link to our tire FAQ article for you.
