Solution for Trailer Wheel that Has Lower PSI Rating Than Tire

Published 10/24/2019

Question:

Jameson - thanks so much for your reply. As to more specifics to refine your response: my tires are Kenda Karrier LoadStar ST205/75R14 and the wheels are DexStar 17-114 -4x5.5 JJ Appears to me the capacities are compatible ~ 7000 tot load. To fit the actual load — 5,000 lb — inflating the Kendas to 50lb might handle the load and match the wheel...but there seem to be advantages to inflating to the max. Perhaps, as the load is not max, the apparent discrepancy is not an issue!?

Dexstar wheels are not typically limited to only being able to handle 50 psi, if there is a limit that low on a wheel it's almost always the valve stem as typically the wheel is the highest rated pressure rated component.

For a higher rated valve stem we have the metal # AM20906 which can handle over 100 psi and fits the two wheel hole sizes on trailer wheels of .453 and .625 inch. If you had a limited tire pressure situation this would solve it, but most likely you'd be fine as Kenda and Dexstar mounted tires/wheels usually do a great job matching all of the capacities needed. You can get me the size and style of wheel and I should be able to identify it and determine it's pressure rating.

Also with trailer tires you really do want to inflate them to their max psi rating when cold to prevent heat build up and ensure you get full tire weight capacity.

The wheel you have is not limited to only 50 psi. Thanks for getting me that info. Your Kenda trailer tire # AM10234 does need to be kept at its max psi rating of 60 psi to ensure you get full capacity of the tire and also to prevent heat build up which leads to tire failure.
