Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Very fast shipment and free shipping to boot. I ordered 4 of these to replace my worn bias ply tires hopping to get better wear and handling from these radials. Price could not be beat as they were $50 less than what I could find locally for the exact same tire and wheel assembly. Will definitely be coming back to e-trailer for my future rv and truck needs!

David G.

After a year the tires are wearing extremely well. Switching to the radials was the way to go. Sway has been reduced a little bit and believe it is the radials vs the bias ply tires.

Excellent tires boxed and shipped fast. I even saved money by buying these tires.

Excellent tire set overall. Bought these to replace some aging tires on my enclosed trailer. I ended up talking to the fine folks at etrailer to make sure these were a good fit, and they indeed were. Simple to install, came pre-mounted and mostly inflated. Very happy with my purchase and they've held up great in the year I've had them!

So far so good. It's a spare will know more in an emergency.

Everything I've ordered from ETrailer has been as described. All has been received promptly.
I expect no less from this tire.

well long story short, bought local from DEALER ,they were garbage ! i guess 3rd times a charm! excellent every thing !price ,fit, and shipping at my garage in 3 days !i suggest if you need a set buy them here you will not be disappointed ! put them on my trailer today .can't wait to take it for a haul !1 HAPPY GUY thanks

The tire and rim appear to be of good quality. HOWEVER.....the rim has decorative blue and red pin striping. This pin striping is not permanent. It washes off if it contacts petroleum product like gasoline or carburator cleaner. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!

I ordered a Kendra tire and wheel and both where just what I wanted and looks great on my boat trailer. Thank you very much.

Kenda has been a great replacement option for all replacement tire needs - quality ite. Great price on tire and rim assembly thru etrailer!

Great bargain from Have not had the first problem. The rims have not rusted but I did spray wheels with a clear enamel before I installed them so do not know if that made a difference. The load range c is the way to go. I will never use anything less again. Never needed balancing and have run at 65 mph with no vibration.

John O.

These tires have been flawless. Only had to add 5lbs of air in years time. Use on landscape trailer so not too many miles per week, but handle weight good.

Just what I ordered. These wheels look nice and appear to be good quality. I have not used them much yet but they are woking fine on my KZ Spree Escape E160RBT.

Jeff R.

One year in on these and I have no complaints. I have put a few thousand miles on them and couldnt be happier.

Dexter lift kit and larger tires/wheels.
more scraping!

Bought this tire/wheel combo and a tire carrier for my travel trailer. Very pleased, good products, fast free shipping and products were packaged well to prevent shipping rash.

This wheel and tire were ordered to replace the one on my RV that blew out and destroyed the rim as I continued down the interstate, until I reached a safe place to stop. The price for the wheel and tire was cheaper than the tire I bought at a tire shop. There are several warnings about buying tires online, as the tires may be old. The tire's manufactured date was five month before purchased! Very happy about that. I used etrailer's [online] post to understand how to measure the lug distances, which made ordering the correct wheel size much easier too. I would highly recommend this item... and etrailer.

easy ordering fast delivery great so far

Excellent tire and wheel. Good quality and packaging was designed to protect item.

Works as intended

Super fast shipping and easy to deal with.
This is the third set of tires I’ve bought for our camper it makes it so easy to just take them out of the box and put them on without having to take my camper to a tire place.

Very fast shipping! Tire looks fine, and will be used as a spare so I hope I never have to use it :)

Good people. Prompt courteous service. Quality products.

  • How to Determine Correct Tire & Wheel For North Trail Travel Trailer
I'm sure we have a tire and wheel for your North Trail travel trailer, though we don't have any way of knowing specifically what is on that trailer. There also looks to be dozens of models, which don't have all the same tire and wheel. That's okay though because it's pretty simple, as what you'll need to know is just the tire size (which will be on the tire itself), wheel bolt pattern, and load range you need. For example, if you have a 205/75-14 tire and it is load range C (1,925 lb...

  • Spare Wheel/Tire Recommendation For Boat Trailer
The tire you described as P205/70/14R is actually designed to be a car or light duty truck tire. Typically, tires for a boat trailer will have ST listed meaning 'Special Trailer'. We have several wheel/tire combinations you can choose from. I have attached a helpful article that explains how to measure the wheel bolt pattern on your trailer for a spare. We do not have a ST205/70R14 tire available but the ST205/75R14 may work well for you. It measures 26.3 inches diameter when inflated...

  • Determining The Correct Tire To Replace Current Trailer Tires
You will know if your current tires are bias or radial by what is printed on the sidewall. If there is a letter R it is radial if there is a letter D it is bias. I've attached an article to help further that covers the differences in construction and function. If you want to replace the tires and wheels on your 5x8 trailer, I recommend you start with measuring the wheel and determining bolt pattern. If you want to keep your current wheel, then there will be tires available to fit. ...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace a C78-14
The C78-14 tire size will convert to a 6.95-14 tire size or about a 175/80-14 metric size. I do not have a trailer tire in that size. That sounds like a very old size that you are looking for. The width on a C78-14 tire would be 7 inches and the overall diameter is around 25 inches. The smallest 14 inch trailer tire I have available is the ST205/75-14. It has a width of 7.8 inches and an overall diameter of 26.3 inches. I am including a link to a list of the tires I have available in...

  • How To Choose Correct Tire Load Range for Trailer with 3,500 Lb Axle
In order to choose the correct load range for a trailer tire you'll need to know the full loaded weight of the trailer. Your Master Tow 80THD uses a 205/75-14 tire mounted on a 14 x 6 wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, according to what I read online. The # AM32153 wheel/tire combo you mentioned uses the same bolt pattern wheel and is the same size tire, so it will fit and work well on your tow dolly. However, If the existing tire is a bias ply or if it isn't a load range C tire, I'd recommend replacing both wheels/tires unless your intention was to use the # AM32153 as a temporary spare. The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM32153 that you referenced is no exception and should not exceed 65 miles per hour. You should also note that trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi listed so as to prevent heat build-up and to allow the tire to be used at its maximum capacity. I attached an FAQ article on trailer tires that you should find informative also.

  • Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Kenda White Wheel to Use as Spare on Travel Trailer
The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Kenda White Wheel, # AM32153, will work as a suitable spare for you provided that your current wheels have the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. Since you should always use tires of the same size, load range, and construction on a trailer, I recommend using this tire as a spare and not for long term use since it is not an exact match to your other tires.

  • Can a ST175/80-13 Tire be Replaced with a ST205/75-14 Tire
In order to change tire sizes you will want to measure the clearance you have with your existing tires and compare that to the difference in size. As a general rule of thumb you are going to want around 3-4" of clearance between the top of the tire and bottom of the fender in addition to 1" between the frame and tire sidewall. A ST175/80-13 tire is 24" diameter x 6.9" wide and for a 14" tire we can use a ST205/75-14 tire as a reference point. This size is 26.1" diameter x 8.1" wide. Therefore,...

To determine if you can go to a larger size tire you have to look at the clearance around the existing tire size. Using tire and wheel combo # AM32153 as an example you can see that the larger size will be 26.3 inches tall and 8.1 inches wide. An ST175/80-13 tire will be 24.1 inches tall and 7 inches wide. So the larger size will be 2.2 inches taller and 1.1 inches wider. Since only half of the additional height is above the axle that means that you will need more than 1.1 inches of...
