Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great tires and rims with a great price and super fast shipping so glad I found etrailer on the internet

Went from a bias ply tire to a radial tire. The radialbtire was a higher speed rating ( highway speed) then the bias ply tire that came on my trailer. The radio tire towed so much better than the bias did ride quality wise, it's almost like not even being back there, jogging the truck around. Rims and tire combo was the best deal going and this company got it going on with prices and with shipping. Got them in a few days. Will buy from them again!

This tire and wheel combo is an excellent choice for single axle or tandem axle trailers. I have had my slngle axle boat trailer for 22 years now and this tire with wheel is the best setup I have ever purchased. Rating is excellent.

Just what I ordered. These wheels look nice and appear to be good quality. I have not used them much yet but they are woking fine on my KZ Spree Escape E160RBT.

One year in on these and I have no complaints. I have put a few thousand miles on them and couldnt be happier.
Jeff R - 04/03/2018

Great tires and rims after one year still holding up like they are new

Went to a local shop to have them balanced followed by a 7000 mile tour of the Maritime Providences. They served my 30 ft camper exceptionally well.

Accidentally ordered one tire instead of two. Contacted etrailer with my mistake. They got the second tire order underway. Ordered the first tire on Sunday, the second on Monday. Received both tires on Wednesday. Can't beat that!

Ordered two of these for my travel trailer. Upgraded from 13" wheels and ST175's. Couldn't be happier with the timely delivery and the quality of these!

Tire blew up my my first trip with it

Very fast shipment and free shipping to boot. I ordered 4 of these to replace my worn bias ply tires hopping to get better wear and handling from these radials. Price could not be beat as they were $50 less than what I could find locally for the exact same tire and wheel assembly. Will definitely be coming back to e-trailer for my future rv and truck needs!

Nice finish on the wheel! Tire goes round & round like it should.

No issues everything went smoothly. My product was delivered a day earlier than expected. I’ll shop with again in the future.

Good price and fast shipping. I wanted a quality wheel and tire package and that's what I received.
The information on tire dimensions helped me to make a change to a larger size tire than original, that was invaluable.

Really good price and excellent quality!

GREAT PRODUCT AND SERVICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FAST SHIPPING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great bargain from Have not had the first problem. The rims have not rusted but I did spray wheels with a clear enamel before I installed them so do not know if that made a difference. The load range c is the way to go. I will never use anything less again. Never needed balancing and have run at 65 mph with no vibration.

These tires have been flawless. Only had to add 5lbs of air in years time. Use on landscape trailer so not too many miles per week, but handle weight good.
John R - 01/24/2020

Although I was disappointed that the wheel with tire I had ordered wouldn’t be available for six months, Ashley explained the situation and guided me to a good alternative that saved me $xx. This was no surprise since my previous experiences with etrailer have always been good.

Excellent quality and super fast shippi ng!

These are working great for my heavy smoker setup

After pulling the trailer 1000 miles I have been very pleased with the tires. They arrived on time and properly inflated. Excellent experience on several levels.

Bought this tire/wheel combo and a tire carrier for my travel trailer. Very pleased, good products, fast free shipping and products were packaged well to prevent shipping rash.

happy to say I haven't needed it yet, but it was the perfect match and feel confident that when I need it there will be no problems

Perfect it fits the bill

I bought these for my car dolly and they look great on it. I will be using it later this week so hopefully they do well on the road. I wish they had an option to have them already balanced.

Fast delivery, as always, and great tires ready to put on my trailer! Keep up the good work!

  • Will an ST205/75R14 Trailer Tire Fit in Place of an ST175/80D13 Trailer Tire
To determine if you can go to a larger size tire you have to look at the clearance around the existing tire size. Using tire and wheel combo # AM32153 as an example you can see that the larger size will be 26.3 inches tall and 8.1 inches wide. An ST175/80-13 tire will be 24.1 inches tall and 7 inches wide. So the larger size will be 2.2 inches taller and 1.1 inches wider. Since only half of the additional height is above the axle that means that you will need more than 1.1 inches of...

  • Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Kenda White Wheel to Use as Spare on Travel Trailer
The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Kenda White Wheel, # AM32153, will work as a suitable spare for you provided that your current wheels have the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. Since you should always use tires of the same size, load range, and construction on a trailer, I recommend using this tire as a spare and not for long term use since it is not an exact match to your other tires.

The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" White Wheel part # AM32153 has a 0 offset which means the hub is centered in the wheel therefore the backspacing is around 3.25". • Can a ST175/80-13 Tire be Replaced with a ST205/75-14 Tire
In order to change tire sizes you will want to measure the clearance you have with your existing tires and compare that to the difference in size. As a general rule of thumb you are going to want around 3-4" of clearance between the top of the tire and bottom of the fender in addition to 1" between the frame and tire sidewall. A ST175/80-13 tire is 24" diameter x 6.9" wide and for a 14" tire we can use a ST205/75-14 tire as a reference point. This size is 26.1" diameter x 8.1" wide. Therefore,...

The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM32153 that you referenced is no exception and should not exceed 65 miles per hour. You should also note that trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi listed so as to prevent heat build-up and to allow the tire to be used at its maximum capacity. The old tire size B78-13 is actually very close in size to the 175/80-13 that you currently have so I would not recommend going to that size to gain ground clearance. The only bigger 13 inch tire that we carry than the 175/80-13 is the 185/80-13 which only gains you about .3 of an inch so it probably wouldn't be a worthwhile upgrade.
