The DeeMaxx Difference

Close-up image of DeeMaxx disc brake installation

When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. DeeMaxx addresses this problem by incorporating drainage holes in the hat section of each rotor to provide even more ventilation than other brands. Combining these holes with the conventional venting design allows DeeMaxx brakes to disperse heat faster. They're also able to shed moisture better, leading to less internal corrosion. The result is cooler-running, longer-lasting brakes that offer consistent performance.

DeeMaxx brakes are the only trailer brakes to satisfactorily pass the high standards of the SAE J2681 brake test. This test is designed to evaluate the friction performance of automotive brakes, so DeeMaxx's passing grade should tell you just how well made these products are.

Close-up image of DeeMaxx disc brake installation of brackets

The patented design of the caliper mounting bolt and sleeve makes installation easier while ensuring that the sleeves stay in place within the caliper. In addition, the side-support design of the caliper mounting bracket puts all of the weight on the bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.

DeeMaxx brakes perform well even in the most demanding environments, which is one of the many reasons why they are preferred by law enforcement agencies like the Texas State Patrol, U.S. Border Patrol, and U.S. Coast Guard.

Great for Campers and Boat Trailers

If you own a trailer, you know that rust and corrosion will eventually creep up no matter where you tow, especially if your equipment doesn't have any kind of protective coating or plating. But if you tow your camper or trailer in the Midwest during the winter, or if you ever launch your boat in brackish water, you'll need even more protection because of the salt you'll likely encounter.

disc brake with signs of heavy rust and corrosion

The Maxx coating on the rotors, calipers, and brackets in this brake kit helps to ensure that DeeMaxx brakes don't end up looking like the one pictured above. It offers great corrosion protection, even with occasional use in saltwater. Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. Zinc plating typically begins to deteriorate after about 100 hours. Dacromet usually lasts for around 300 to 400 hours. DeeMaxx's Maxx coating lasts for more than 1,000 hours in the salt spray test.

The environment this test creates is much harsher than anything you'll ever experience in your journeys, but it provides a testament to how well DeeMaxx brakes resist rust and corrosion.

If you're living the salt life full-time or you live right on the coast, you'll probably want to invest in something that offers even more protection, like DeeMaxx kits that include stainless steel components for the ultimate in corrosion resistance.

Get a Safer, More Comfortable Ride

Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

side-by-side comparison of an electric drum brake and a hydraulic disc brake

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

close-up image of DeeMaxx disc brake caliper parts

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. And the caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.

instructions on how to bleed brakes laser etched into the back of a DeeMaxx disc brake caliper

DeeMaxx also has simple instructions for bleeding the brakes laser-etched on the back of the calipers. This convenient time saver means you'll always have the guidance you need on hand when the time comes for maintenance.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure even bolt pattern

For example, on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

diagram showing how to measure odd bolt pattern

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Product seems high quality, well built and customer service was also excellent.

by:

WOrks very good. Fit on a 15" rim were not good. The site said any 15, 16 or larger. The calibers drag on the inside of rims. I had to choose to go larger size rims but did not want to go larger because the hight I was at lauching boat now. Called tech support, they worked wirh manufacture and was told to grind dowm edge or caliber. It has extra metal from mold at factory. I did about 1/4 inch end to end and all is good with about 1/8 clearaance now.

by:

Product was as expected, good quality braking system, installed easily in about 1-2 hours per wheel. Shipping and ordering was quick and easy. Time will tell more after installing on my fresh water boat trailer.
Unfortunately, it did not clear my 15” wheels properly, as indicated in the product description. I found by adding a 1/4” wheel spacer, that was just enough to get the clearance needed to prevent the calipers from rubbing on my 15” rims. (I have also seen others say that they used a grinder to take about 1/4” off the caliper body to get them to clear). This is the only reason for 4/5 stars.

by:

The customer service is spot on. I had an issue with shipping and their customer support was on it from the time I notified them to when the replacement arrived. Hard to find customer service like this these days.

by:

Emma was great at helping me purchase these parts. They arrived two days earlier than expected as well. Your videos are also very well done and full of great information. I have some painting and rust removal to do before reassembly but will send pix when complete. Thx again

by:

Have not installed yet but the kit appears well made. Hoping the pads hold up well.

by:

They definitely made a huge difference for stopping no question about it

by:

Braking effect is much more pronounced that my previous disc brakes. Parts delivered quickly. Installed to replace Knott calipers which had been locking up frequently- these calipers and rotors show no signs of corrosion or loss of brake effect after a couple of uses in saltwater. I would highly recommend purchasing mounting hardware as these do not come with any- also note if you have tandem axels you need to have “T” line splitters as the brake line inlet is standard 3/16 (or 1/8 NPT if you remove the included 90° fitting)- the Y splitter that my previous calipers used through the lower bleed fitting were too big. Very satisfied so far; just need to see how they hold up over time.

by:

Parts look good.  One problem is the caliper plate sticks out 3/16 inches farther which means you have to change the plate .  Drilling out the old plate is a nightmare.

by:

Fast Delivery, great tracking and all parts fixed perfectly.

  • Converting From Hydraulic Drum Brakes to Disc Brakes
Hi Mike; can you send me your axle information? Is it a 3,500 lb axle? If I had to guess it is likely a 3,500 lb axle on there right now. Assuming you have the standard 3,500 lb bearing combination you can use the DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit # DE66YR. This uses # L68149 inner and # L44649 outer bearings. You already have the hydraulic lines so the only other thing would be an actuator for disc brakes. Assuming you want a coupler for a 2" ball and have a 3" wide tongue the # DM62VR you looked...

With those pieces of info I can help you get what you need. In the mean time I attached a link on this page to an article that covers how to add disc brakes to a trailer that will walk you through the entire process as well.

  • Looking For New Disc Brake Kit For 2020 Continental Boat Trailer
Hey Ryan, thanks for reaching out. We certainly should have a disc brake kit that will work for you, but there is no way to know exactly what kit you will need based on the make and model of trailer. Trailer manufacturers just do not make this kind of info available online. Specifically, I will need to know your axle weight capacity, and your inner/outer bearing sizes. This way we can be sure you get the right brake assembly, and correct hubs for your trailer. For example, what we see...

Hey Gary, thanks for all of the info on your axle. From that I can tell you have a 3,500 lb trailer axle with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern so the correct DeeMax disc brake kit would be the part # DE66YR. Then for a electric over hydraulic actuator kit the best option is the Hydrastar part # HBA16-252-82 as it comes with the best EOH actuator that is the most reliable and quickest reacting plus it comes with all of the electric components and brake lines so it would cover everything...

  • Can The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator DM72VR Be Used With Disc Brakes?
Hey Doug, thanks for reaching out. So the # DM72VR actuator you mentioned is only for drum brakes, you can't use it with disc brakes. If you want to run a disc brake setup, you need to use the # DM62VR actuator instead. They operate at a different PSI. That said, I see you already ordered the # DM72VR drum brake actuator, so if you intend to use that we should definitely have a drum brake kit for you, but I'll need a bit more information in order to be sure you are getting the right thing....

  • Marine Grade Surge Brake Kit Recommendation for a 16' Boat Trailer
Hey Stephen, thanks for reaching out! I believe you have a 3,500 lb axle so I'm going to base my recommendations off of that, but it would be best if you verify this on your own. You can see the axle rating either on the tag near the tongue of your trailer or on the tag in the middle of the axle itself. We have some drum brakes with a dacromet finish, but there aren't any hub/drums with a marine coating so I recommend going with some disc brakes; specifically the DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit...

Thanks for reaching out, Mike! Your 2-3/4" hole spacing sounds like it matches with a standard 3,500 lb axle brake spacing (2-13/16") so we'll get you setup with an Electric-Over-Hydraulic (EOH) brake system using those parts. I really like the DeeMaxx kits because they have a much better coating on them than others on the market. Hey Doug, your bearing numbers don't match up with current 3,500 lb trailer axle bearing configurations so I don't believe we'd have a set of hubs for your axle that would work. With that said if you somehow did get idler hubs that ift and the bolt pattern was 5 on 4-1/2 inch the # DE66YR could in theory fit but you'd need to have brake mounting flanges on the spindle currently. I attached a picture of a spindle that has a brake mounting flange for you to compare to what you have on your...

  • Can DeeMax 3,500 lb Axle Hub/Rotors Fit on 4,400 lb Trailer Axles
Hey Gary, this is a great question but it comes down to what brand axle you have. The Dexter 4,400 lb axles use the same bearings as the 3,500 lb axles so your current DeeMax rotors # DE66YR would work but if instead your axle is a Lippert or AL KO brand axle they would not transfer as they use a different bearing set. If you can find out your axle brand and let me know I'll be able to help further if needed.

That is an extremely good question, Jim. The DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit - 10" Hub/Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - Maxx Coating - 3,500 lbs # DE66YR is indeed two of the # DE89YR put together to make ordering for one axle easier. That said, I have no idea why we have the pricing the way it is and I will be bringing this up to our pricing team. We do have some options for replacing the Knott calipers and rotors on your Coyote Boat Trailer. We really do not have any info or specs on the Knott brand brakes, but since it is all for a 3,500 lb axle the sizing should be standard. Standard meaning the axle uses the standard 4-bolt brake flange (holes 2-7/8" apart on center), and the hub uses the # L68149 (1.378" inner diameter) inner bearing, and the # L44649 (1.063" inner diameter) outer bearing.
