Why Fold-Down Steps are Right for You

If you've ever stepped into a camper that has standard metal steps, you've probably felt that scary springboard effect that makes you reach for the handle. That bounce occurs because those pull-out steps never touch the ground. Fold-down steps have adjustable legs that steady the steps on the ground, so you can feel safe using them. Also, fold-down steps store behind your camper door, which means they aren't left out in the elements to rust or warp like factory steps.

MORryde StepAbove vs. Lippert SolidStep

But what makes these MORryde steps different from other fold-down steps, like the Lippert SolidSteps? The StepAbove has a couple advantages over the SolidStep.

First, the MORryde steps can be detached when you need park your camper in tight spots. If you have to park close to another vehicle in a storage lot, for example, there might not be enough clearance to deploy your steps. With SolidStep, this means that you can't deploy the steps and now they are blocking your entryway. MORryde steps can be easily detached by sliding the pins out of the floor hinges, which allows you to lift the steps out of the doorway so you can slip inside if needed.

Second, unlike the SolidSteps which have a solid backplate on the top step, the StepAbove has no backplates blocking the gaps between each step. This makes it easy to sweep the steps free of dirt and debris before folding them up in your doorway, so you aren't stuck cleaning up your entry after every hike or trip.

Will MORryde StepAbove Entry Steps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and 5th wheels. The fold-down steps from MORryde install inside your camper's door frame and lift up to latch into the doorway for storage. To ensure that you choose the correct size for your application, follow these 3 easy steps:

Step 1: Measure the Entry Height

Measuring your RV entry height

Measure from the doorway threshold on your camper to the ground. For these steps to work, you will need an entry height between 25" and 29".

If you find that you have a larger entry height, there are other step assemblies that fit entry heights ranging from 25" to 42". (See table below.)

Step 2: Measure the Doorway Width

Measuring your RV doorway width

Measure from the inside of your door flange to the inside of the door flange on the opposite side. Your doorway will need to be between 23-3/4" wide and 26-1/4" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out that you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 21-3/4" wide to 30-1/2" wide. (See table below.)

Step 3: Measure the Threshold

Measuring your RV threshold height

Measure the rise of your threshold. The distance between the floor and top of the threshold must be between 5/8" and 3/4". If the height of your threshold is outside of this range, the doors may not close properly.

Measuring your RV threshold gap

To allow room for the hinge plate, there must be a gap of at least 3/8" between the threshold and the bottom of the entry and screen doors. If the gap is too narrow, the doors may not close while the steps are down.

Find the Step that Works for You

If, after taking your camper's measurements, you find that these steps will not work for you, use the table below to determine which part number you need.

  • Is There A SolidStep Manual Fold Down Step That Will Fit My 25-1/4 Wide Doorway
The SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps for 25" - 28-7/8" Wide RV Door Frames - Double - Aluminum, part # LC733931, will fit your RV door without any issues. These steps will fit doorways from 25" wide up to 28-7/8". The 1/4" difference will not cause problems with the fit. I have attached a video review link below.

  • Will The MORryde StepAbove RV Steps MR26RR Work With 22" Entry Height?
Hello Ed, thanks for reaching out. The MORryde StepAbove RV Steps # MR26RR are designed to work with an entry height between 25" and 29". With only 22" between the threshold and the ground the step would not have enough room to open all the way. A better fold-down step option will be the Lippert SolidStep RV Steps # LC733931. This step will fit doorways between 25" - 28-7/8" wide, and it will work perfectly with the 22" entry height.

  • Is There Longer Adjustment Leg for MORryde StepAbove to Allow for More Height Range
Hey Erik, all of the MORryde StepAbove RV steps use the same adjustable legs part # MR36DR so there isn't a longer version available to give you more adjustability there. Do you know which step you have currently and your threshold height? I can see if there's a better option than what you have now.

  • Recommended Replacement For MORryde STP-017 StepAbove RV Steps
I spoke with MORryde since the STP-017 is an OEM number and everything we offer is aftermarket and was found that that number should relate to the MORryde StepAbove RV Steps for 23-3/4" to 26-1/4" Wide Doorways # MR26RR. I would just measure your door with and entry height just to be safe, but this should be an exact match besides the fact that this one won't have a wolf design laser cut into the steps.

  • Does Lippert StepAbove Have Quick Release and Strut/Spring Lift Assist
Hey Emerson, it sounds like you previously had an older version of the MORryde StepAbove which had a quick disconnect built into the hinge system. The Lippert Stepabove part # LC733931 that you referenced does not have that nor does it have a strut/spring assist to raise and lower it since it is a two step model which doesn't weigh quite as much. The most similar MORryde step above that has this is the part # MR26RR which fits doorway widths of 23-3/4 inch to 26-1/4 inch.

  • Replacement Leg for 2nd Generation MORryde StepAbove RV Steps
I could not locate anything specifically from the STP-015-MR226-09 number. It looks like that may be an OEM part number for whoever manufactured your RV. From the little information I could find, it looks like it may be the OEM equivalent of the MORryde StepAbove RV Steps # MR26RR. The correct replacement leg would be the Replacement Leg for MORryde StepAbove RV Steps # MR36DR. • Threshold to Door Clearance Needed for Lippert SolidStep RV Steps
The MORryde StepAbove RV Steps, like part # MR26RR, do require that 3/8" gap from the bottom of the door to the top of your threshold but that clearance is reduced to a range of 1/4" to 3/8" for the Lippert SolidStep, like part # LC733931. If you don't have enough height for either of these solutions then I recommend checking out the TorkLift GlowStep Revolution Scissor Steps, like part # TLA8102, instead. • Can 3-Step MORryde StepAbove Kit Be Installed on 27" Threshold Height
Hey Steve, thanks for reaching out! You can try using the 3-Step MORryde StepAbove RV Steps # MR98RR, but since your height is 3" shorter than the minimum the stairs won't sit correctly which is why MORryde recommends the 2-Step # MR26RR. When I spoke with my contact at MORryde they said the 3-Step will retract to a minimum of 28" and since your height is 27" the threshold bracket will stick up enough that you won't be able to close your door. So for your case you'll need to stick with...
