Could Brophy Scissor Steps part # AS03 Attach to Top of Tailgate

Question:
We drive with our tailgate closed. Do you think we can attach the bracket direct to top of the tailgate instead of the camper?

The mounting bracket for the Brophy Scissor Steps part # AS03 could certainly be attached to the top of a truck tailgate with the included hardware but it's hard to say if your tailgate would be rated for the weight of people walking up and down on the steps.
