When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Dexter Adjustable-Channel Brake Actuator Review

Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Titan weld-on adjustable channel drum brake actuator. Has a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and the momentum will push the trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. So with the surge brake actuator system, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down.

So when this happens, the actuator, the inner portion, will contract, apply force to the master cylinder back here, and this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailers brake. Now this one, if you notice, has the unique roller design, and this will reduce resistance during the telescoping to help create a nice straight line movement. They do use the grease Zerk fittings on the rollers, makes it easy for lubrication of the moving parts. Just attach a grease gun to it and pump grease into it.Now, this one is an adjustable channel design. You can see it has three different mounting positions for the coupler. Now the coupler that goes in here, those are sold separately on our website. Now the channel height on this, if we measure from the bottom all the way to the top is seven and a half inches.

The inside width is the standard three inch. And the distance between the mounting holes right here center to center is two inches. If you notice it is a nice gray prime finish. Now this does come with a breakaway kit that is required by law. Basically this breakaway kit will prevent a trailer runaway situation. So what you'll see is this chain right here, this long chain is attached to this lever back here.

So what you do is you'll take this hook on the end of this chain, hook this to your tow vehicle. And then what'll happen is if by chance your trailer comes disconnected, it would pull on this chain, which would activate the lever. And again, that would apply pressure in the master cylinder to stop the trailer in a runaway situation. But that is all included. Now this is a weld on installation. A few specs on this again.

This is for trailers with drum brakes, gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. Maximum tongue weight is 2000 pounds. It is designed to mount on a straight three inch wide trailer tongue. And one last note on this, if you look in the back here where you connect your brake lines to right here into the master cylinder, because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with either a reverse lockout solenoid on the back here or our free backing brakes on your trailer, that way you can drive in reverse without this actuator triggering your trailer's brakes. But that should do it for the review on this Titan weld-on adjustable channel drum brake actuator with a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity.
