Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX-5 we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Class III Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13315. Here's what our hitch looks like fully installed. The cross tier's going to be hidden underneath, and it is a class III, so it's going to give us that two-inch by two-inch opening. It has a nice, reinforced collar, giving it that nice clean finished look. Now our safety chain loops are going to be a rolled steel stock style welded to the bottom of our receiver tube, and as you can see we're not going to have any issue getting most size hooks on or off. Now, our hitch is going to use a standard 5/8 pin and clip. It's not included, but you can pick one up on our website using part number PC3.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX5 we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Custom Fit Class 3 trailer hitch receiver. Part number is 76138. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like installed on our CX5. As you can see, it offers a really nice, clean appearance. The crosstube is going to be hidden behind the rear fascia there, so all we're really going to be adding is the receiver tube opening and safety chain connection points. You can see it's going to hug nicely right along the bottom edge of the fascia there and still offer us pretty good ground clearance here behind the vehicle. Now this is a Class 3 hitch so we've got a 2" by 2" receiver tube opening. That's going to be ideal for just about any type of hitch accessory you want to use.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX-5, we're going to take a look at, and show you how to install the Draw-Tite Custom Fit Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers the 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. Its part number is 36601. Here's what your hitch is going to look like installed on your vehicle. As you can see, a very nice thing about it is that our cross-tube remains completely hidden, so the only thing we're really going to be adding to the rear of the vehicle is going to be the receiver tube area here, and our safety chain connection points. You see it snugs up nicely right underneath the fascia, and it doesn't require any trimming to get it in this orientation. Now this is a Class II hitch, that means its got the 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver tube opening, and it's going to be pretty versatile. This is something that with Class II accessories you can carry large cargo carriers, you can carry the bigger bike racks and things like that.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5 - Draw-Tite

Today, in our 2016 Mazda CX-5 we'll be having a look at the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Class III Receiver part number 75217. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, there's absolutely nothing hanging below the bumper at all, just the 2" receiver for our Class III hitch. Everything else is tucked up behind it. As you can see, we have our standard 2 x 2 Class III opening here. We have these nice safety chain loops here which are easily accessible and easily hook on any size safety chain onto there for the most part.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5 - Curt

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX-5, we'll be having a look at the Curt Class III 2-inch Receiver Trailer Hitch, part number C13127. This is what our Curt Class III 2-inch Trailer Hitch Receiver looks like installed on the back of our CX-5. As you can see, the only part that really sticks out is the 2-inch receiver itself. The body of the hitch is stuck up underneath the bumper cover, so you don't see it at all. It provides just a very clean installation here. It has a nice gloss black powder coat finish, so it looks like it came from the factory with this hitch installed on it.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5 - Draw-Tite

Today on 2016 Mazda CX5, we will be installing the Draw-Tite Class 2 inch and quarter trailer hitch, part number 36602. With our hitch installed on our Mazda CX5, you can see how well tucked up it is behind the bumper. The only thing you can really see hanging down is the inch and a quarter receiver here and our safety chain loops here, which are very easy to hook safety chains onto because they are not very thick and recessed, so you can hook on even the smallest of safety chains really easily. This hitch has a 300 pound max tongue weight rating and a 3500 max gross trailer weight rating. Obviously you will want to consult the owner's manual of your CX5 to figure out which number is lower. If it is rated for a lower amount than what the hitch is rated for, obviously you will want to go by that number. You don't want to exceed the limitations of your vehicle. For a couple of measurements here to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessories you may need. From the center of our 1/2 inch diameter hitch pin hole to the back of our bumper, we are looking at about 6 inches.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Mazda CX-5 - Hidden Hitch

Today on our 2014 Mazda CX-5 we're going to take a look at, and show you how to install the hidden hitch custom fit Class 3 trailer hitch receiver. This offers the 2 inch by 2 inch opening. Today, on this 2015 Mazda CX-5, we're going to review and install the Hidden Hitch Class III 2-inch Receiver Hitch, part number 87686. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on our CX-5. As you can see, there's really not all that much to see but the receiver opening itself. This is our 2-inch opening here. This is our 2 inch opening here and this has a rounded collar around the edge of it. This is actually reinforcement for our tube. We'll see two hitch pin holes. The larger hole is 5/8ths of an inch in diameter and the small one is actually designed for use with a J pin stabilization pin and that works with accessories that do not have their own anti-rattle device built into them.

The remaining portion of our hitch is hidden behind the rear facial making it a really sleek and stylish design when added to our CX5. Next I'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 2 3/4 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 13 1/4 inches.

  • Both the Curt Hitch Class III Reciever # C13127 and Draw-Tite Class III Reciever # 75217 is confirmed to fit on your 2016 Mazda CX-5. Both receivers are basically identical as they have the same weight bearing capabilities and install in the same manner. The Curt Hitch does require the use of stabilizing straps for all non-trailer loads similar to # 18050. Also, this hitch does weigh a few pounds more, but the construction between the Curt hitch and the Draw-Tite receivers are very similar....

  • Would Curt Hitch for 2016 Mazda CX-5 Contact Vehicle Exhaust
  • You would not have to worry about the Curt hitch part # C13127 contacting the exhaust of your 2016 Mazda CX-5. While the exhaust will be relatively close to the hitch it would be far enough away that there would not be any clearance issues. I attached a couple pictures that show how much clearance we had when we installed this hitch on a similar CX-5. I attached an install video for you to check out too. In some situations the hitch will contact the exhaust, we made a help video that...

  • Tips for Routing Trailer Wiring Harness Power Wire to Battery on 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • The most direct route to run trailer wiring power wires on your 2016 Mazda CX-5 is to follow along a frame rail (there are likely other wires or lines you can wire tie the power wire to). Avoid any areas that might pinch or burn the wire such as suspension, exhaust, and engine components. I actually wrote a help article which I have linked for you that has tips for routing the power wire including a few different methods.

  • Trailer Hitch for a Bike Carrier and a 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • None of the trailer hitches for the 2016 Mazda CX-5 require any cutting or trimming of the fascia. The instructions for the hitches are linked on their product pages for you to take a look at. For a hitch to use with a bike carrier I recommend going with a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver such as # 75217. The 2 inch receiver opening will afford you many bike rack and accessory options. If you can tell me how many bikes you want to carry I can make some recommendations for you.

  • Trailer Hitch Fit Recommendation for 2016.5 and 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • Actually the same Curt hitch part # C13127 fits the 2016 and 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 so this hitch part number would be exactly what you need. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage...

  • Can Curt Hitch C13127 Fit 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 with Back Up Camera
  • We just called our contact at Curt and they told us that the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # C13127 will fit just fine on your 2016.5 CX-5. They said the only thing that changed on the 2016.5 model is the static pack which includes a back-up camera. If anything is placed in the hitch with a camera installed then you can expect issues when using the camera on the back of the vehicle, but there is no issue installing this hitch on the vehicle. What that means is that you will end...

  • Trailer Hitch Clearance on 2016 Mazda CX-5 for Kuat Sherpa Bike Rack
  • The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75217 is a great choice for your 2016 Mazda CX-5. When we had the opportunity to install this hitch on a similar 2016 CX-5, we found that the clearance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest part of the bumper measures 6 inches. If you have an older model Kuat Sherpa, such as the S101, the hitch will not provide sufficient clearance to be able to fold the rack up against the vehicle in the stored position. The older Sherpa...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Mazda CX-5 that Early and Mid-Year Models
  • One solution is to go with the Curt hitch part # C13315 which is confirmed as a fit for the early and late models of the 2016 Mazda CX-5. This way you wouldn't have to determine which you have and can order it now without having to do any type of homework. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd then want the part # 118563 which is also a confirmed fit. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount...

  • Difference in Aerodynamics Between Curt C13127 & Draw-Tite 75217 Class III Hitches on Mazda CX-5
  • There is a small difference in size and shape between the receiver tube reinforcement plates that are part of Curt # C13127 and Draw-Tite # 75217 Class III hitches. The size/shape/position of these plates are determined by engineering considerations, to give the hitches their maximum strength, but not with regard to wind resistance or drag. Hitch makers do not really address wind resistance in the design of their hitches since in reality there are many other factors in play that will...

  • Class II Hitch Availability for 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • It's a warranty situation for the Curt hitch. It's not that the Draw Tite is necessarily stronger than the Curt it's just that they approach the idea of carrying a non-supported load more cautiously than Draw Tite. The only thing is that for your 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 there is only the Curt hitch part # C12080 that is confirmed as a fit so you would have to use the # 18050 with a bike rack. Realistically Draw Tite will eventually have a hitch fit for your vehicle, but at this time we are...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2016 mazda CX-5
  • The most popular hitch for your 2016 Mazda CX-5 is Curt hitch # C13127. This hitch is rated for 525 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. Consult the owner's manual for the vehicle capacity and go by the lower of the 2 ratings. In addition to the trailer hitch you will also need a wiring harness. You can use wiring harness # 118563 to add a 4-Way flat trailer connector to the back of the vehicle. I have linked videos showing example installations of the hitch and...

  • Cargo Carrier and Cargo Bag Recommendation for a 2016 Mazda CX-5 with 1-1/4 inch Hitch
  • Sounds like you have a Class II 1-1/4 inch hitch like the Curt part # C12080 installed on your 2016 Mazda CX-5. The Rola cargo carrier part # 59507 would fit this hitch and work well, but if you do have the Curt hitch you will need to use the stabilizer strap part # 18050. Curt requires the use of their stabilizer strap part # 18050 when using their hitch to carry a non-supported load like a bike rack. I attached a review video for you to check for the strap as well. • Looking For Lightweight Cargo Carrier With Good Ground Clearance
  • It sounds like you're looking for a cargo carrier. Due to the steep driveway, you'll need a carrier with the tallest rise available, like the Curt 20x48 Cargo Carrier # C18110. The carrier features an angled shank that will raise the cargo platform up by 3-3/4inches. This carrier comes in at 30 pounds by itself, which fits your needs. This cargo carrier will fit well in the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75217 on your 2016 Mazda CX-5. When we installed this hitch on a CX-5, we...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • The location of the backup camera on the 2016 Mazda CX-5 is high enough that if you were towing a trailer you would see it but it would not be totally obstructed by the trailer behind the vehicle. All of the hitches will install in the same place so there wouldn't be a single option that would change the viewing angle. The hitch I would recommend though is the Draw Tite part # 75217 which is a confirmed fit. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118563 which is a custom fit. I...

The noted fit exclusion was temporary, until Curt engineers could get their hands on the 2016.5 to test fit this hitch. If you also need a 4-pole wiring harness you can use Curt kit # C56310. This is illustrated in the linked review video and the linked article will assist your installation. Several helpful videos and articles are linked for you.

  • What is the Correct Trailer Hitch Receiver and Wiring Harness for a 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • I am not quite sure what all the changes were between the 2015 and 2016 Mazda CX-5 models, but I can tell you that it must have been fairly minimal as some trailer hitch receivers and wiring are pretty consistent between both model years. The Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13127 that you referenced is a confirmed fit for both models and is an excellent choice in a trailer hitch. Even though the hitch is rated for 3,500 lbs Gross Towing Weight and has a 525 lbs Tongue Weight...

  • 2016 Mazda CX-5 Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation
  • As long as you do not exceed the towing capacities of your 2016 Mazda CX-5 you would be fine. Since you plan to just tow a small trailer and sport bike that shouldn't be a problem. Whenever available I recommend people use a Class III hitch instead of a Class II as the hitch size has more capacity and has more accessory options available since it is a more popular hitch size. For that I would recommend the # 76138 which is a fit for your vehicle and would work well. For trailer wiring...

The installation process is outlined in the linked instructions and is also shown in the video linked for you. Hitch # 75217 does not fit the mid-year model. For a 4-pole wiring harness you can use part # 118563 which is a powered converter harness that isolates and protects your vehicle wiring from any shorts or other faults in the trailer wiring.

  • Can a 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness be Mounted Outside of a 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • After a trailer wiring harness is installed on your 2016 Mazda CX-5, you will only pull out the harness from inside the cargo area when needed. When not in use it is stored in the cargo area of the vehicle. For a harness I recommend # 118563. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you. If you want to run it outside of the vehicle and permanently mount it on the exterior it will require routing the 4-Way end through the bottom of the cargo area. Look for a grommet that...

  • Hitch and 4 Bike Platform Rack Solution Recommendation for a 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • I have a solution for you but Curt requires the use of the stabilizer strap part # 18050 when using any of their hitches not rated for a weight distribution system with a non-supported load like a bike rack. Failure to do so will void the warranty. So for your 2016 Mazda CX-5 I would recommend the #87686 as this hitch does not have that requirement. To convert your Thule T2 part # TH9044 to a 4 bike rack you would only need the extension part # TH918XTR. The hitch I recommended has...
