Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Mazda CX-5 - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on our 2015 Mazda CX-5, we're gonna take at and show you how to install the Draw-Tite, customer fit, Class II trailer hitch receiver. This part number is 36601. As you can see, we're really not changing the overall effect of the rear of the vehicle very much. Just a small cosmetic difference here with our receiver tube opening, and safety chain connection points. That main cross tube of the hitch remains completely hidden the fascia. That keeps it looking pretty clean here on the rear. This is a Class II hitch, so it's gonna work out really well for most hitch applications.

Best 2017 Mazda CX-5 Hitch Options

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the best hitch options for your 2017 Mazda CX5. Here we have the two most popular options. Up top here we're going to have the Draw-Tite. Down here we're going to have the CURT. Here we have the Draw-Tite installed on our Mazda CX5 but I do want to mention that both the CURT and the Draw-Tite are going to sit about the same, and the crosstube is going to be hidden nicely behind the bumper. The main thing we're going to see is the receiver tube sticking out.The first difference you're going to notice right away is how they look.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Mazda CX-5 - Curt

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Mazda CX-5 we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Class II Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C12170.Here's what our hitch looks like once we have it fully installed. It is going to tuck up nicely behind the bumper, and all we're really going to see is that receiver tube sticking out. It's a class II hitch, which means it's going to give us that 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. As you can see, it has a nice reinforced collar not only giving it that added strength, but a nice clean finished look. All of your accessories are going to mount right here with the pin hole, and it's going to accept a standard 1/2" pin and clip, which they are included in our kit, which is always nice. Our safety chain connection point is going to be a loop style underneath welded to the bottom of the receiver tube, and it's just slightly offset from the pin hole, so it's going to have plenty of room to get most size hooks on or off, and we're not going to have to worry about anything interfering.Your hitch is going to have a 350 pound tongue weight along with a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Mazda CX-5 - Draw-Tite

Whatever accessories you do decide to mount you're going to be using the mounting hole here and it's gonna accept a standard five-eighths pin and clip. Now they're not included in our kit, but you can pick one up on our website using part number PC3.Now the safety chain loops are gonna be a loop style, welded to the bottom of the receiver tube and as you can see we're gonna have plenty of room to get most sized hooks on or off and it is just slightly offset from the pin hole so even with a locking device we're not gonna have to worry about it interfering with our safety chains. Our hitch is gonna have a 600 pound tongue weight and a 4,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. Now I always want to mention you always want to double check your vehicle's owners manual to make sure it can handle that amount of weight.

Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX-5 we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Class III Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13315. Now our safety chain loops are going to be a rolled steel stock style welded to the bottom of our receiver tube, and as you can see we're not going to have any issue getting most size hooks on or off. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like installed on our CX5. As you can see, it offers a really nice, clean appearance. The crosstube is going to be hidden behind the rear fascia there, so all we're really going to be adding is the receiver tube opening and safety chain connection points. You can see it's going to hug nicely right along the bottom edge of the fascia there and still offer us pretty good ground clearance here behind the vehicle. Now this is a Class 3 hitch so we've got a 2" by 2" receiver tube opening. That's going to be ideal for just about any type of hitch accessory you want to use.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX-5, we're going to take a look at, and show you how to install the Draw-Tite Custom Fit Class II Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers the 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. Its part number is 36601. Here's what your hitch is going to look like installed on your vehicle. You see it snugs up nicely right underneath the fascia, and it doesn't require any trimming to get it in this orientation. Now this is a Class II hitch, that means its got the 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver tube opening, and it's going to be pretty versatile. Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5 - Draw-Tite

Today, in our 2016 Mazda CX-5 we'll be having a look at the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Class III Receiver part number 75217. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, there's absolutely nothing hanging below the bumper at all, just the 2" receiver for our Class III hitch. Everything else is tucked up behind it. As you can see, we have our standard 2 x 2 Class III opening here. We have these nice safety chain loops here which are easily accessible and easily hook on any size safety chain onto there for the most part.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5 - Curt

Today on our 2016 Mazda CX-5, we'll be having a look at the Curt Class III 2-inch Receiver Trailer Hitch, part number C13127. This is what our Curt Class III 2-inch Trailer Hitch Receiver looks like installed on the back of our CX-5. As you can see, the only part that really sticks out is the 2-inch receiver itself. The body of the hitch is stuck up underneath the bumper cover, so you don't see it at all. It provides just a very clean installation here. It has a nice gloss black powder coat finish, so it looks like it came from the factory with this hitch installed on it.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda CX-5 - Draw-Tite

Today on 2016 Mazda CX5, we will be installing the Draw-Tite Class 2 inch and quarter trailer hitch, part number 36602. With our hitch installed on our Mazda CX5, you can see how well tucked up it is behind the bumper. The only thing you can really see hanging down is the inch and a quarter receiver here and our safety chain loops here, which are very easy to hook safety chains onto because they are not very thick and recessed, so you can hook on even the smallest of safety chains really easily. This hitch has a 300 pound max tongue weight rating and a 3500 max gross trailer weight rating. Obviously you will want to consult the owner's manual of your CX5 to figure out which number is lower. If it is rated for a lower amount than what the hitch is rated for, obviously you will want to go by that number. You don't want to exceed the limitations of your vehicle. For a couple of measurements here to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessories you may need. From the center of our 1/2 inch diameter hitch pin hole to the back of our bumper, we are looking at about 6 inches.

Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Mazda CX-5 - Hidden Hitch

Today, on this 2015 Mazda CX-5, we're going to review and install the Hidden Hitch Class III 2-inch Receiver Hitch, part number 87686. This has a rounded collar around the edge of it. This is actually reinforcing for a tube.

Both receivers are basically identical as they have the same weight bearing capabilities and install in the same manner. If you are interested in using your hitch for towing, you will need a hitch ball, ball mount and pin and clip. I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118563 and our hitch ball mount kit # 989900 which comes with two hitch balls,...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2016.5 Mazda CX-5
  • Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 36602 fits up to but does not include the 2016.5 Mazda CX-5. For your mid-model year 2016.5 you can instead use Draw-Tite hitch # 36601. If you plan on doing any towing the recommended ball mount is # 36061. It comes with a hitch pin and clip. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19257 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. For trailer wiring you can use wiring harness # 118563 to add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle.

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • Thanks for the compliment about our website and videos! We all work really hard to provide information to our customers that's second to none. I'm not sure what Mazda offers in the way of a factory hitch. I can tell you from experience that it'll be two to three times what an aftermarket hitch costs. I'd recommend going with a Class III hitch like the Draw-Tite # 76138. Once installed, you'll have a hitch with the more common 2 inch receiver, which will allow you more flexibility...

  • Difference Between Draw Tite Hitches for 2016 Mazda CX5 36601 and 36602
  • The 36602 is a now discontinued trailer hitch similar to the part # 36601 that you also referenced. The # 36601 is actually the replacement for the 36602 and fits both the older and newer versions of the 2016 Mazda CX-5. I attached an install video for the hitch for you to check out as well.

  • Class II Hitch Availability for 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • It's a warranty situation for the Curt hitch. It's not that the Draw Tite is necessarily stronger than the Curt it's just that they approach the idea of carrying a non-supported load more cautiously than Draw Tite. The only thing is that for your 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 there is only the Curt hitch part # C12170 that is confirmed as a fit so you would have to use the # 18050 with a bike rack. Realistically Draw Tite will eventually have a hitch fit for your vehicle, but at this time we are...

  • Carrying 4 Bikes with a Hitch Mounted Bike Rack on a 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • Bike racks that are used on a Class I trailer hitch receiver are only allowed up to 2 bikes. This is because the additional force from weight being extended out from the vehicle is too much leverage for the vehicle to handle and could cause damage to the hitch, rack, and/or vehicle itself. So a bike rack for 4 bikes should not be used (And often will not fit) into a Class I trailer hitch. However, with that being said we carry Class II and Class III trailer hitch receivers that fit...

  • Does Exhaust Need To Be Removed To Install Trailer Hitch On 2016 Maxda CX-5
  • For the installation of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 76138 the muffler is very easy to remove. You just remove the two fasteners at the rear of the muffler and the 2 fasteners on the exhaust pipe going into the muffler and you can get the muffler out of the way while you install it. As the instructions state, you can lower the exhaust to have easier access, but I recommend doing it like the installers in our shop show.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Trailer Wiring Harness for 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • Since you mentioned that you already have 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver accessories, if you'd like to stick with a trailer hitch that has a 1-1/4 inch receiver, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class II Frame Receiver Hitch # 76138 after 2016.5 and # 36601 before 2016.5. I recommend this hitch because it will meet the 2,000 pound towing capacity of your 2016 Mazda CX-5, work well with your existing ball mount, and it will not require an additional stabilization strap (as the Curt hitches for your...

  • Tools Required to Install Draw-Tite Class III Hitch 76138 on 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • Trailer hitch installation on your 2016 Mazda CX-5 will require basic hand tools like a 3/4-inch socket and ratchet, and also a torque wrench like # ALL944001. The linked instructions tell you all the tools required to mount Class III Hitch # 76138 on your Mazda CX-5. I also included a helpful article with tips for an easier hitch install. If you'd like an anti-rattle lock for use with this hitch (to secure a ball mount or bike rack) you might consider the Tow Ready J-Pin Stabilization...

  • What are the Differences between Curt Class III Hitches for 2016.5 Mazda CX-5
  • The Curt hitches part # C13127 and # C13315 are both a fit for your 2016 Mazda CX-5 whether it's the mid year update or the older style 2016 model. At first one hitch was designed to fit the newer and older model but then the figured out they both fit both models. So essentially you have two similar hitches that install differently for the same vehicle with slightly different capacities. The part # C13315 has the higher capacities at 600 lbs tongue weight and 4k total trailer weight...

  • Tips for Routing Trailer Wiring Harness Power Wire to Battery on 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • The most direct route to run trailer wiring power wires for harness # 118564 on your 2016 Mazda CX-5 is to follow along a frame rail (there are likely other wires or lines you can wire tie the power wire to). Avoid any areas that might pinch or burn the wire such as suspension, exhaust, and engine components. I actually wrote a help article which I have linked for you that has tips for routing the power wire including a few different methods.

  • Best Trailer Hitch Comparison and Recommendation for a 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • For your 2016 Mazda CX-5 there are two Class III hitch choices available. There is the Curt Hitch part # C13315 and the Draw Tite hitch part # 76138. Both have the same capacities, install the exact same, but since Curt requires the use of a stabilizer strap, # 18050, any time you carry a non-supported load like your Thule bike rack I would rule that one out for you.

  • Will a Underbody Panel Need to Be Removed When Installing Hitch on 2016-1/2 Mazda CX-5
  • When installing the Draw-Tite hitch # 76318 on your 2016-1/2 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Model there is an extra panel that is installed on this model only that may need to be removed. One of our customers found this out while installing this hitch to a 2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring model. They described the trim piece at about 2 feet long and L-shaped. We do not know if the this piece is on a 2016-1/2 model CX-5, so you may not have to remove it from your vehicle.

  • The 2-inch Class III Draw-Tite hitch that fits your mid-year 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 is part # 76138. The installation process is outlined in the linked instructions and is also shown in the video linked for you. Hitch 75217 does not fit the mid-year model. For a 4-pole wiring harness you can use part # 118563 which is a powered converter harness that isolates and protects your vehicle wiring from any shorts or other faults in the trailer wiring.

  • Trailer Hitch Clearance on 2016 Mazda CX-5 for Kuat Sherpa Bike Rack
  • The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76138 is a great choice for your 2016 Mazda CX-5. When we had the opportunity to install this hitch on a similar 2016 CX-5, we found that the clearance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest part of the bumper measures about 3 inches. If you have the newer Kuat Sherpa 2.0, such as # SH22G, the hitch and rack will work well together. This rack will sit 9 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole when folded up, so the...

  • Can Curt Hitch C13315 Fit 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 with Back Up Camera
  • We just called our contact at Curt and they told us that the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # C13315 will fit just fine on your 2016.5 CX-5. They said the only thing that changed on the 2016.5 model is the static pack which includes a back-up camera. If anything is placed in the hitch with a camera installed then you can expect issues when using the camera on the back of the vehicle, but there is no issue installing this hitch on the vehicle. What that means is that you will end...

  • We just recently confirmed with Curt that their 2-inch Class III hitch # C13315 will indeed fit the mid-year version of the 2016 Mazda CX-5. The noted fit exclusion was temporary, until Curt engineers could get their hands on the 2016.5 to test fit this hitch. Our hitch pages will be updated shortly. If you also need a 4-pole wiring harness you can use Curt kit # C56310. This is illustrated in the linked review video and the linked article will assist your installation.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Mazda CX-5 for Before and After Mid-Year Upgrade
  • I have a really easy hitch solution for your 2016 Mazda CX-5. The Draw Tite hitch part # 76128 that you referenced fits both the early and late models of your vehicle so it would fit regardless. Because of that you would not be forced to first determine what version of the vehicle you have is.

  • Trailer Hitch for a Bike Carrier and a 2016 Mazda CX-5
  • None of the trailer hitches for the 2016 Mazda CX-5 require any cutting or trimming of the fascia. The instructions for the hitches are linked on their product pages for you to take a look at. For a hitch to use with a bike carrier I recommend going with a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver such as # 76138. The 2 inch receiver opening will afford you many bike rack and accessory options. If you can tell me how many bikes you want to carry I can make some recommendations for you.

This hitch is confirmed to fit your vehicle and provides a 2 inch receiver opening with a 600 pound tongue weight capacity and a 4,000 pound towing weight capacity. I recommend also checking the capacity of the vehicle itself as listed in the owner's manual, as this will likely be the limiting factor. I have attached an installation video on your Mazda CX-5 for you to check...

With that being said, regardless of the model vehicle you have, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 76138. All of the hitches will install in the same place so there wouldn't be a single option that would change the viewing angle. The hitch I recommend though is the Draw Tite part # 76138 which is a confirmed fit. For trailer wiring you want the part # 118563 which is a custom fit. I attached an...
