Gen Y 5 Inch Offset Gooseneck Ball for 2025 GMC Sierra 3500 Short Bed and Solitude 310GK

Hello, Im thinking of purchasing a Gen-Y gooseneck for my 2026 310GK Solitude. I have a 2025 GMC Sierra 3500 crew-cab short-bed truck. Question: what are pros and cons of Gen-Y and Curt offset puck systems

Hi David, between the two, I’d go with the Gen-Y setup for your 2025 GMC Sierra 3500 crew cab short bed. Unless I’m misunderstanding what you’re looking at, Curt doesn’t offer an offset gooseneck ball for the factory puck system on your particular short bed GMC. Gen-Y does with the 5 inch offset part # GY55XR, and that would be my pick with your 2026 Solitude 310GK.
The major pro with the Gen-Y is that 5 inch offset. It moves the ball farther back toward the tailgate and gives you some extra breathing room between the Solitude and the cab when you get into those sharper turns. That’s something I really like on a short bed truck. Your 310GK also has that rounded front profile to help with cab clearance, so you’ve already got that working in your favor. I still wouldn’t say you can turn as sharp as you want without keeping an eye on things, but those extra 5 inches sure are nice to have when you’re maneuvering into a campsite.
The only con I can think of with an offset setup like this is that moving the ball farther back changes where the trailer’s weight is sitting in relation to the truck’s axles which can sometimes lead to more strailer sway. With only a 5 inch offset, that change is pretty minimal, but it’s still worth mentioning when you’re talking about a fifth wheel the size of your Solitude. As long as you’re staying within the ratings of the truck, hitch, and Gen-Y pin box, it wouldn’t keep me from using the offset.
Are you mainly looking at the offset for those tight campground turns?

David, I have a Brinkley Z3100 with the GenY gooseneck and I pull it with a 2024 GMC AT4. It’s a standard (not long bed) and I use the GenY 5”” offset. It works great. I’ve towed it nearly 15K miles. The GenY hitch does have its fair share of chucking until you get around 3K miles on it. It’s a cinch to hitch up. I have a lot of room when the tailgate is down to move around. I’ve had it almost at 90 degrees while backing (not ideal on the axles). The point is I don’t have to worry about the truck and the fifth wheel coming in contact. I would highly recommend this set up. Plus a ton of room in the bed. I put a pancake compressor, a propane tank and a Honda 2000 generator in the back even when towing.
