If you’re planning on installing a hard wire version note you can’t connect it to your 120v home outlet if it has a GFCI on that circuit. I had to return it as there is no way to run a dedicated circuit to my trailer.

by:

Wired up and functioning properly. Word of warning choose your location wisely, it has a slight hum when operating. I had to do some soundproofing in addition to the installation.

by:

Fast shipping!

Hardware looks sturdy and well constructed. Would like to have the face of the display aligned with the front of the connector, but I think I can remedy that. I'll unscrew the connectors, add some silicone grease to the O-rings (I hope that I find) inside, and put it back together square.

Software could be better. The one most important metric I'm looking for is peak Amperage when my A/C starts up, and I'm not getting a good number there. The display doesn't update continuously, and the peak power usage is just a moment in time, so I get a reading just before the peak and another reading just after the peak.

Would be great if the iPhone app was upgraded to give an option for "Peak Level" like is common on audio devices. That, or a line graph of the last minute or so, with a Y-Axis where I could find the Amps at the peak.

Two stars deducted for the lack of a vital software feature and a slightly sloppy assembly. For the money, I'd expect both.

Highly recommend this product. I installed it on my 2014 Tiffin. Very straightforward installation. Information provided by BLuetooth and Wifi invaluable as far as electrical protection for my motorhome.

by:

Product came quickly with great communication from Jacob F. Its what we needed. Just bought a new trailer so will be back ordering things for it with Jacobs help.

by:

The shipping was very fast. The surge protector looks very good and seems sturdy. I really like the Bluetooth connectivity. The app shows how much power you are consuming. Very nice product!

by:

This is the way to go if you want to protect the electronics in your trailer. A couple of bucks for prevention can save you thousands later.

by:

I like the protector being in-line. Looks very good/neat. It was simple to install just a little time for neatness. Downside: if an issues occurs- no power.

by:

Excellent product that works exactly as expected. I sleep well knowing my RV electrical system and large solar installation are protected while plugged in!

by:

It silently works. I hear the thunk of the relay closing a few seconds after I turn power onto the RV. The photo shows my installation behind the hydraulics in a Brinkley Z2900. It is tied directly from in incoming shore power and the output goes to my inverter (with internal transfer switch). It has been flawless! (But to be fair, I've not plugged into any power that has been questionable nor encountered any violent storms).

We have been using the 30A version with our 50A trailer using a dog bone adapter for two years (previously had a 30a trailer for 3 years). During this time we had to monitor our usage to make sure we didn’t go over. We have now been using the 50A version on our first week long outing of the season and I should have gotten the 50A right away rather than stretching the use of the 30A surge protector. Works great, one of those purchases that goes unnoticed until you need it. Some strong storms may be rolling in as I type this so the surge may come in handy.

The app works great and really like that the 50A version shows you your consumption on both legs of the circuit. Also helps you understand which outlets are on which branch by tuning things on/off. Overall, a great unit for the price and gives peace of mind when plugging your camper into the power pedestal.

Shipping (USPS) was slower than expected, 2 days later than expected which had me a bit nervous as it came the day before we left. We have been having this issue with USPS on other shipments from other companies as well.

I'm really impressed with the Power Watchdog Surge Protector I installed in my RV. One of the standout features is the Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, which makes it easy to monitor everything right from my phone. The emergency shutdown feature also gives me peace of mind, knowing that my RV's electrical system is protected.

Installation was straightforward, and it solved the worry I had about power surges during our trips. For anyone considering this product, I'd recommend taking the time to use the mobile app—it really adds to the convenience and overall value.

by:

Power Watchdog works as advertised. I love the Bluetooth connection to my phone that indicates power consumption. Installation was a breeze, other than the 50 Amp motorhome wire that is a tad stiff. Instructions were very clear.

by:

I purchased ths for added protection for my camper. I love the quality and design of the surge protector, and highly recommend it.

by:

Recently installed. First trip out it detected low voltage on one leg. Campground wanted to blame the surge protection until I showed them the app with the details. They replaced the breaker and all was good. The site next to us mentioned that someone had fried a board just last week. PAID FOR ITSELF IN JUST ONE TRIP!! I did need to modify the opening to accommodate the existing coach cord diameter. For the output to the transfer switch I purchased a 50amp range cord and it worked perfectly. Easy install. 2005 Newmar Mountain Aire.

by:

Has not been installed yet. No installation instructions were provided and do far have not been sble to find any? Etrailer has been awesome in providing support for questions pertaining to installation! Will update on product once installed and functional

by:

After hard wiring this into my electrical bay, everything has worked as designed.
I like the App and the ability to track kWh and line voltage.

by:

The ”Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth – Portable – 30 Amp” works exactly as advertised. It was easy to set up, performs flawlessly, and offers excellent value for the price. One of my favorite features is the Bluetooth capability.
Shipping was fast, and the product arrived in perfect condition. My only minor criticism is that the package was shipped without an outer box, making the contents obvious during transit. While this didn't affect the condition of the product, an overpack would have provided a little more protection from possible shipping/porch theft.
I highly recommend this product. The Power Watchdog surge protector is a quality product, and both the manufacturer and the e-tailer have earned a solid 5-star rating from me.

Have not put it to a campground test yet but worked perfect at home. Install is straight forward and no issues. Etrailer is great to do business with. Thanks

Keeping your coach’s electrical guts safe from campground power problems is what this Power Watchdog 30 amp hardwired surge protector does best. I like that it automatically cuts power if voltage goes out of range, because that saves your appliances from the kind of stress you don’t always notice until something burns out. I think the four-second start delay is smart since it pauses just long enough to confirm steady power before flipping everything back on. The hardwired install means you don’t have to mess with plugging in a separate box at the pedestal, and it stays protected from weather inside your RV. I’m a fan of the app features too, since you can glance at your phone to see your live power draw instead of guessing what’s running. The logo light makes it obvious when your line is clean or when there’s a fault code to check. This setup is great for 30 amp RVs where you want a permanent solution that runs in the background. It’s not a match if you need a portable option you can move between rigs, but for folks who like things tidy and out of the way it makes a lot of sense.

It's really hard to review a product when request arrives before the product arrives at my home.
I am very happy with the quick shipping

See what our Experts say about this Hughes Autoformers RV Surge Protectors

  • How Do You Hardwire Hughes Watchdog Surge Protector 30A In RV?
Greg, the Power Watchdog Surge Protector # HU72VR gets wired as the first stop on your shore power cord, right where it enters the coach. That way it protects the transfer switch if you have one, your breaker panel, and all appliances. With a transfer switch: Pedestal > Cord > # HU72VR > Transfer Switch > Distribution Panel Without one: Pedestal > Cord > # HU72VR > Distribution Panel You’ll cut your main cord, land the pedestal side on the # HU72VR input lugs (bottom of surge protector),...

  • Which Surge Protector Is Best Option For 2023 Grand Design Reflection With 50A Service Plug In
Kendra, congrats on the new Reflection! Those are super nice. Since your RV has 50 amp service, you’ll want the Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector # HU74ZR. The Watchdog Surge Protector # HU72VR is 30 amp and won’t cover both legs of your panel, and it gets hardwired in which isn't for everyone! The # HU74ZR simply plugs in without any hardwiring, will protect against surges, monitor each leg individually, and boost low voltage on heavy draw days. Have you run into low power at campgrounds...

  • Is Power Watchdog Surge Protector HU72VR Gen II?
Hello Kimberly, thanks for reaching out. Yes! The Power Watchdog Surge Protector # HU72VR is indeed the Gen II Surge Spike Protector with Bluetooth, WiFi, and Emergency Shut-Off.

  • Which Surge Protector Is Good For 2005 Newmar Mountain Aire Travel Trailer Stored In Barn With 30A
Sandy, the # HU84ZR is actually built as a portable-style power center, so it’s meant to plug into the pedestal (or wall outlet) and then accept your RV’s shore cord on the other side. That means it usually lives outside at the hookup point, and its housing is weather-resistant for that purpose. If you’re using it in a barn or garage, that’s fine too - just keep it off the ground where it won’t sit in puddles or dust. Unlike the hardwired # HU72VR, there’s no rewiring involved; just plug...

  • Can Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector Be Mounted In Compartment On Its Back?
Steve, you’re right to ask. The Watchdog Power Center Surge Protector for RVs and campers # HU74ZR should never be mounted on its back. It’s designed to rest on its legs in the upright position so the ventilation slots can do their job. If it’s laid flat, airflow is blocked and there’s a real chance of overheating - the unit will even shut itself down if internal temps climb past 165°. Also, this unit is meant to sit outside near the power pedestal, then your rv plug runs outside to connect...

  • Can Watchdog Surge Protector 30A Be Used With 15A Residential Adapter For Storage?
Yes Keith, the Watchdog Surge Protector # HU72VR will still protect your RV even if you’re plugged into a 15A residential circuit with an adapter like Mighty Cord RV Power Cord Adapter - 30 Amp Twist Lock Female to 15 Amp Male # A10-1530DBK. It doesn’t care about the amp rating - it just watches the voltage and wiring for safety. The only difference is you’ll be limited on what you can run in the RV running off only 15A as opposed to 30A. Perfect for keeping batteries charged and the fridge...

  • How To Install Hardwired Surge Protector In Winnebago Minnie Travel Trailer With Transfer Switch 30A
Jim, you’re on the right track. The Watchdog Surge Protector 30A # HU72VR is designed to be wired in ahead of your transfer switch, so it sees the pedestal power before your coach’s electronics do. That way, the transfer switch itself is protected along with your appliances. The install is pretty straightforward: disconnect shore power and turn off breakers in RV, cut your main line, and land the input/output leads on the labeled lugs. We recommend mounting near the power cord entry in...

  • Will Watchdog Surge Protector Give Errors When Using Generator With Jayco Jay Flight?
Alan, that’s a great question. Yes, the Watchdog Surge Protector # HU72VR works fine with generators, but you may see open neutral or open ground codes if your generator has a “floating neutral.” That’s not the Watchdog malfunctioning - it’s protecting your rig. The fix is the Hughes Ground Neutral Bonded Plug # HU33FR. Just plug that into an unused outlet on the generator, and it bonds the neutral and ground properly. (you may not need this, but figured I'd mention it) Do you plan to...

  • Can I Use 2 Surge Protectors On RV 30A At One Time For Extra Protection?
Rick, you won’t need to double up. Both the 30A # HU72VR and the 30A # HU84ZR already have full surge protection, emergency shutoff, and monitoring built in. Running them in series could actually create more hassle and even issues perhaps. If you mainly want voltage boosting (to keep A/Cs happy in hot campgrounds), then the # HU84ZR is the better fit. If you just want hardwired, permanent surge protection and monitoring, the # HU72VR is perfect. But you don’t need to run both at once -...

  • Does Watchdog Surge Protector Keep Record Of Faults And Store Them?
Yes, Mark, it does. The # HU72VR logs each fault in the app, so you can check when, why, and how long power was cut. That’s especially handy if you leave pets or food in the rig and want to know if things warmed up while you were gone on a hot day. Would you like me to walk you through setting up the app notifications so you’ll get alerts on your phone?

Brenda, the # HU72VR has the same smart monitoring as the boosters. Through the app you can see volts, amps, watts, and even kWh used since hookup. It’s really handy for load balancing - turn on the microwave and you’ll see the amperage spike in real time. Do you want me to walk you through setting alerts in the app?
