Question:

Purchasing a Alliance Avenue 23Ml 5th wheel and am considering putting a Gen Y gooseneck on it. The RV will be towed by a 2026 Chevy Silverado 2500HD standard bed. Do I need a offset ball or not. My research finds people going both ways. Your thoughts. Thanks

Hey Dave, congrats on the new truck and trailer. You're definitely going to want the extra clearance an offset gooseneck ball provides with a 6-3/4' bed. The Gen-Y gooseneck pin boxes do not help with turning clearance.

For your 2026 Chevy Silverado 2500, I recommend the Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck Trailer Hitch item # GY55XR. This 2-5/16" hitch ball is designed to fit in the factory puck system. It will push the connection point with your trailer back 5" toward your Silverado's bumper. The bracket will attach to the gooseneck ball and rearmost pucks. It also has safety chain loops built in.

Do you know what pin box bolt pattern the Alliance Avenue 23Ml 5th wheel you're looking at getting has? I can find you the right Gen-Y pin box if you do.

Dave. I have an Alliance Avenue 32RLS and tow with a 2024 Silverado 3500 Standard bed with a Gen Y pin box. I was also concerned about the same thing when I bought the truck but I will tell you in 2 years and many trips out I have not needed the offset ball. I keep it in the bed of the truck in case I get into a situation that would require it but I have not. When I towed with the short bed Ram, I needed an offset as that bed was short. Hey I always use an off set on my standard bed 2500 gmc pickup. My trailer is 42’ and about 4000 lbs of tongue weight. The offset give me more room with my cab on tight corners. We are always backing into tight spots at the race track. The Gen Y gooseneck hitch I got had the offset built in. Hope this helps.

I use the offset in my 22 gmc standard bed. It gives me more turning radius for backing and tight turns. It’s not really necessary for the 8 ft bed

Does the offset ball affect the towing characteristics do to shifting the pin weight of the trailer 5" back?

@Dave The item # GY55XR offset ball is going to change where that weight is distributed across your truck's axles. It'll put more weight on the rear axle. You've plenty of truck to compensate for that weight shifting more towards the rear axle on your Silverado 2500 and it looks like your Alliance Avenue 23Ml 5th wheel trailer tops out right around 10,000 lbs. If you were pulling that with a Silverado 1500, I would be worried about that extra weight raising your front end and causing squat. Your 2500's pinweight capacity is between 3,300 lbs to over 3,600 lbs depending on what model you have. You'll have no issues with the connection point being pushed back 5".
