How to Adjust GEN-Y GoosePuck Arms That Won't Fully Seat

Updated 09/29/2026 | Published 09/26/2026

Question:

Hello, I just bought the Gen-y gen 2 5” offset ball for my 2022 GMC Denali HD. I tried to install it and the shaft for the center puck fit fine, but the two arms will not go all the way in no matter what I tried. They go part way down, but won’t go down far enough to swing the chain hooks back. I tried WD40 but that didn’t work. Maybe there’s some rust that I can try to remove with a wire brush, but it seems like the metal on the Gen-Y is too thick? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome back Ronald.

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble installing this # GY55XR. If I were there with you, I'd recommend going the wire brush route first. Just gently clearing any surface rust or debris that could be hindering the arms from going in, avoiding excessive force as to not grind away any metal. If this doesn't solve your problem, then moving onto the adjustment of the puck attachments would be step two. I found something on a Gen-Y install guide that says to slightly loosen the center nut of each locking puck to allow adjustment, once the proper adjustment is found, go ahead and retighten the nut. I'm finding very similar comments about fitment, I'm confident this will help you.

What trailer are you planning to tow with the 5-inch offset ball?

Yes, I’m sorry to bother but thank you for the reply! It was in fact the center nut.
