I plan to replace a 3500 pound Smart Jack with the Stromberg Carlson JET-5000 and in doing so I want to make sure my truck tailgate can open when it is hooked up to the rv trailer. What are the dimensions of the head? Can the unit be mounted 90° if needed? Thank you

From the center of the tube to the furthest part of the motor housing on the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack item # JET-5000 measures right at 5-3/4". The distance from the mounting bracket to the top of the jack is 23". This jack would clear a tailgate if the measured distance from the back of the tailgate to the jack mounting point on the trailer was 24", which gives 1" of clearance.
It can not be mounted at 90 degrees. No electric jack like this can.
If you are worried about having enough clearance for your tailgate there is another solution, which is a long ball mount.
Assuming you have a 2" hitch, here are three options depending on the rise or drop you need:
- Ball Mount 3/4" Rise or 2" Drop, Extra Long item # D-26
- Curt Class III Drawbar - 2" Rise - 4" Drop - 13" Long item # C45270
- Curt Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 4" Rise, 6" Drop - 14-1/4" Long item # D-28
