What Hitch Extension Can be Used For Motorhome With 5,000 lb Towing Capacity

Updated 01/05/2026 | Published 09/24/2024

Question:

Is this extender suitable for my application? I am flat towing a 2024 Ford Maverick Hybrid weighing approximately 3700 lbs behind a motorhome with 5000 lb towing capacity. I want to use an extender to protect the vehicle from making contact with the motorhome rear bumper in the event of a tight turn. The tread on this extender is a desirable feature also. I understand the tongue weight capacity will be diminished, but I'm not sure the pulling capacity will be a problem. it seems to me, this item should be rated to tow my car any help is appreciated.

Hello James,

We have a hitch extender for you that'll work to protect your Ford Maverick from making contact with your motorhome, though the MaxxTow Hitch Extender with Step # MT70069 is ill suited for the job. Reason is the total capacity of your hitch is going to be diminished by 50%, so you're looking at a 2,500 lb towing capacity for a 3,700 lb truck. What you can use that will give you added length and has the weight capacity you need is the Roadmaster Anti-Rattle Hitch Extender for Tow Bars # RM-071-1075.

This will still reduce capacity by 50% but it's 10,000 lb capacity will still make it 5,000 lbs so well over the capacity you need.

Hey James, how did things go with the Roadmaster hitch extender for your Maverick and motorhome setup? Did it give you the clearance you needed on tight turns? Your results could really help others towing similar vehicles.
