Converting From Surge Brakes to Electric Brakes on 2012 K-Z Spree Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a 2012 KZ Spree camper that I am interested in converting to electric brakes and replacing the coupler. Just wanted to make sure I am getting the correct parts. The trailer has a 2 3/8” dexter axle. I’m interested in electric brake conversion, leaf spring flip kit, and replacing the existing Atwood surge brake coupler.

We can start with the over-under conversion kit since that is pretty simple. Since you have a 2-3/8" axle you will need the Dexter # K71-384-00. This will allow you to mount the leaf springs on top of the axle on your 2012 K-Z Spree.

Moving on to the brakes, I'm assuming with your 2-3/8" axle that you have 3,500 lb axles. Make sure to verify this information. Assuming that is the case, you will need the following:

-Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35-SA
-Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-K (If you have a standard axle)
-Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K (If you have E-Z Lube axles)
-Trailer Wiring Junction Box - 7 Color Coded Terminals - ABS # 3375601101
-7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector, 4' Long # H20043
-10 Gauge Primary Wire # 10-1-1
-Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger # 20400

The brake assemblies are for a 3,500 lb axle and fit a 4-bolt brake flange pattern. The hub and drum assemblies I listed are also for a standard 3,500 lb axle, but won't be necessary if you already have drum brakes. The junction box and connector will add a 7-way to your trailer to use the electric brakes. The 10 gauge primary wire will be used to run wire back to the brake assemblies. You will also want to add a breakaway like the Hopkins listed above.

For your coupler, if it isn't in bad shape you can lock it out permanently and save yourself the money and trouble of replacing it. You can drill through it and add a bolt so it won't compress, making it a standard coupler. If you want to replace it I have added a link below to all of our couplers so you can choose the correct size and style.

You will also need a 7-way on your vehicle and a brake controller if you don't already have one. The # ETBC7 comes with everything you need to add a 7-way. It is possible there is a custom fit wiring harness for your vehicle. If you let me know the year, make, and model I can check for you.

For a brake controller I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED52VR. This is a reliable controller that won't take up a lot of space in the cab. Again, if you let me know what vehicle you have I can see if a plug and play wiring harness is available for installation.
