Can Furrion Chill Cube Operate With RV Furnace

Hello etrailer, I'm looking at getting the Furrion Chill Cube for a ducted setup and I was wondering if this will work with my furnace? I see it has a remote that also acts as a thermostat, can the furnace be tied into that? Thanks.

Hello Sam; that is a great question! I reached out to Furrion and you will be able to use the Furrion Chill Cube # FR69TD (white) or # FR49TD (black) with your furnace. However, the remote is not capable of operating the furnace at this time. Also, we have found that the included wall thermostat isn't always compatible depending on the furnace you have.

My recommendation is to get the # FR39TD (black) or # FR99TD (white) and then add a separate thermostat like the Dometic Digital Thermostat # DMC84RR. This works with 2-wire systems and will control the furnace independently.

What AC do you have right now? Even if you have a Furrion, you will still have to swap out the wall thermostat since none of the old system parts are compatible. If you have a different brand it is going to be a complete replacement one way or another.

Thank you for all of that information, that really helps clear things up for me. I have a Furrion setup right now but I like all of the features the new one has. I wasn't sure if the old thermostat would work so I'm glad you pointed that out. Thanks again!

@Jake since you have a ducted setup but no furnace you need the # FR99TD (white) or # FR39TD (black). This includes the air distribution box along with the remote.

@RobinH, I am trying to replace a Carrier Air V ducted system that does have a separate furnace and I am seeing and being told all kinds of different replacement models. I would like to go with the 18k Chill Cube and have to have the IR remote because the ceiling in my RV where the a/c is more than 8' high.

@Robbie with all of the new system changes and the new R32 refrigerant units it can get confusing. If you want the AC to work together with the furnace you need the # FR69TD or # FR49TD. This has the replacement wall thermostat required to run your furnace. The other option is to get the # FR99TD or # FR39TD and keep the AC and furnace separate. Your furnace would continue to run off of the existing wall thermostat and the Chill Cube would run off of the remote and ADB. Most people prefer to have it all connected but this is a viable option.

Does the cube work with the Micro Air thermostat (currently have the one compatible with Colaman Mach) and does the micro air softstart work with the cube?

@BradS this system, and pretty much any other rolling out right now, uses the new R32 refrigerant. This means you will need to use the thermostat that comes with the Chill Cube because all of the settings are different compared to old systems. The Chill Cube does not need a soft start and using one wouldn't be of any help. The variable speed compressor keeps the start up current incredibly low so you don't have that initial spike in power like other AC units.

@RobinH so you're saying the Chill Cube can not be used with the micro air touch thermostat....that's not good. I have the MicroAir thermostat and some of my customers also have it and won't want to give up the functionality of it.

@BradV that is correct. Unless MicroAir comes out with a variant that works with R32 AC units none of their thermostats will work properly with the models rolling out right now. You can't even cross over the old Furrion thermostats with the new units and the same is true for other brands. As of right now the only option is to use the thermostat from the AC manufacturer. I would reach out to MicroAir to see if they're working on a way to make them compatible or working on new thermostats. I don't know everything about their products so it may even be possible for them to reprogram them to work with the new R32 units. I imagine they're aware of this issue and working on a solution but I can't say for sure.

The Furrion thermostat will control the gas furnace, but only if you have AC power to the Furrion main unit - there is no separate DC feed to the main unit, so if you are not on AC (generator or shore power for me) the Furrion thermostat will not operate the heater. I’m going to see if I separately feed 12V DC to the thermostat if the heater part may work. Lippert tech support said it would as is relies on the “brain” in the main unit, but I want to confirm. As is, my backup plan is to have a separate 12DC thermostat for the gas heater. Also, I relocated the room temperate sensor to the thermostat - the default is in the return air.

@RussellB - Were you able to feed 12V DC to the thermostat for the gas heater? I wired the two wires coming from by Dometic heater labeled "Thermostat" to the thermostat, but it still requires shore power to work. On top of that, when I switch to "Heat" mode, the AC unit turns off and the wall thermostat loses power (and then the heat kicks off). Where would I wire the 12V into that thermostat to ensure consistent power?

@Matt I just installed a battery powered thermostat above the Furrion one for heat only. Even on shore power where it had the 12V hot all the time, I could not get the heat to work.

Hey Robin. I'm thinking of adding a Chill Cube to my 2024 Imagine 2600RB. It's prepped with power to the vent in the bedroom. So, there are ducts to that space, so I'm thinking the ducted unit. Ideally I'd like to upgrade the existing thermostat to the Microair dual zone, tie both units and the furnace to make a nicely engineered project. The existing unit(liingroom) is a furrion HE 15000. Is this possible?

@Barry if you have ducts then I would get the ducted unit. They actually have different designs between ducted/ductless to optimize how it works. I can't really comment on that thermostat and trying to use them together. People are starting to report back that other thermostats work but they may be risking damage to the AC. The reason the thermostats are different on the new R32 units is because it responds differently compared to the R410A refrigerant. It is also mildly flammable and needs to be handled carefully because of that. I'm guessing the old Furrion is an R410A unless you just swapped it out so I would keep them separate. At the very least I would ask the thermostat company if it is capable of handling both even though they're different. Worst case you stick with the remote on the Chill Cube and smart thermostat for the other.

@RobinH on the ducted cube, do you have the option to open a baffle to dump the air at the unit or does it only go through the ducts?

@Barry you do have the option to open the shutter which will dump cool air below the unit. Check out my answer page linked below and you will see a picture of this.

I see that the back of this thermostat has a separate spot that has "gnd" and "furn+" terminals. I only have two wires (red and white) coming from the furnace in my ceiling. I traced them back to the furnace and they are both connected to blue wires that say "thermostat" on them. I believe these just signal wires. Are these the two wires that i should connect to that side of the thermostat?

@BobT not a problem, best to check. Luckily you have 2 wires and not more since we have heard of some other systems that have issues working with this thermostat. It is only setup to work with a 2-wire and takes some creativity if you don't have that kind of wiring on your furnace.

Hey Robin H. The problem (at least for me) is that the furrion chill cube fan turns on even in heat mode. This draws too much power away from the furnace while its trying to fire up. The furnace fan will turn on but it doesn't have enough power for the igniter. The thermostat will eventually say "Lo" and turn off the furnace fan. I called furrion support and they said that there is currently no way to prevent the fan from turning on in heat mode, so my only option was to return the single zone thermostat, use the remote control for the ac unit and use a honeywell heat only battery powered thermostat for the furnace. This method works. It's unfortunate that I had to separate the ac unit and furnace. All they have to do to fix this issue is to have the single zone thermostat not turn on the fan while in heat mode. Im sure that the engineers over at Furrion can make this happen.

@BobT yeah if it wasn't clear that is what I was saying to do before. I don't really see it being a big deal keeping the systems separate since most of the time they won't overlap. I am, however, frustrated with Furrion that they don't have a better solution since you expect the thermostat you ordered to work as intended. Hopefully they sort all of this out in the near future but it may take a while to update the thermostat. It already took months for them to even release it in the first place.

@RobinH So am I understanding this correctly? If I install the wall thermostat sold for the chill cube, when I turn on the furnace via the thermostat, the ac fans come on? Also, is there a thermocouple in the thermostat for the ac or does it remain in the plenum?

@RonnieM it is not supposed to do that, what Bob was describing is a problem. I recommend keeping the Chill Cube separate since we're finding more and more issues with the wall thermostat working correctly depending on the furnace. The Chill Cube thermostat does have a temperature sensor, so does the ADB, so does the remote.
