Why is Center Pin on 7-Way End of 7-Way to 6-Way Umbilical Missing

Updated 05/07/2021 | Published 05/06/2021

Question:

The center of my Blue Ox 7- blade connector to 6 pin blue umbilical cord is blanked out. I was hoping to use the center for a charge line on my motorhome socket but there is no blade in the center of the cord socket. Is this a manufacturer error? Thank you

It's not a defect. The center pin on the 7-way trailer connector is used for reverse lamps, which aren't needed when flat towing a vehicle. The pin in the 1:00 position on your tow vehicle 7-way is the pin that provides the constant 12-v supply which can be used to maintain but not charge the battery in your towed vehicle. The 12-v power should come out on the center pin of the 6-way connector on the other side. You can confirm this by turning on the ignition of the tow vehicle and using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 on the pin in the 1:00 pin on the tow vehicle 7-way to ensure it's active. Then, plug in the umbilical to the 7-way and test the center pin on the 6-way end, which you should find powered up.

On the vehicle you're flat towing, I'd recommend installing the # RM-156-25 charge line kit and connecting its supply wire to the center pin of the 6-way socket on the front of the vehicle. I'll link to a demonstration video showing how that's done.
