Question:

Can the 3 bike yakima hangout fit on a 2019 volvo xc90? One answer i see says yes, but the instruction manual says use of the anchor strap is only for the 2 bike option?

Both the 2-bike, part # Y02637, and 3-bike, part # Y02638, versions of the Yakima HangOut trunk mount rack do fit your 2019 Volvo XC90. However, you're correct, the Glass Hatch Hooks, part # Y02612, that are included with the racks can only be used with 2 bikes. So even though the 3-bike rack fits your vehicle you're limited to 2 bikes on it.

To carry 3 bikes on your Volvo I recommend adding the Curt trailer hitch, part # C53HR, and a hitch mount bike rack. Hitch mount racks are generally preferred over trunk mounts mainly because they don't make contact with the vehicle at all.

A great option for a rack is the Swagman Trailhead, part # S63365. The Trailhead is an entry level rack that still has some additional features like anti-sway cradles to hold the bikes still and the tilting feature to access the rear cargo area of your Volvo without taking the rack off the hitch. It also has an anti-rattle hitch pin the stabilize the rack in the hitch.

As with any hanging rack like the HangOut and Trailhead you may need a bike frame adapter bar like the Swagman Deluxe, part # 64005, for women's or children's bikes. The adapter bar fits between the seat post and handle bar stem to create the horizontal crosstube like men's bikes have.
