Where Do Safety Chains Attach on Curt Trailer Hitch # C13180

Updated 04/01/2025 | Published 04/11/2018

Question:

I bought this hitch and there does not seem to be any points to attach the chains. Am I missing something or doesnt it come with it?

The safety chain holes are well hidden on Curt trailer hitch # C13180. There is a part of the hitch above the receiver that attaches to the vehicle bumper. The holes are in that plate. I have included a picture pointing them out.

why will this not work with the towable bumper, what is the issue?

@Ro From the looks of things it has to do with the bracket that connects under the bumper. You'll want the Curt # 13184 if you have the factory towable bumper, or the Curt # C13180 if you don't have it.

@JonG , looking at the photo by Dennis on 5/2/20, it looks like those bolts go into the bumper simply to hold the bracket in place, not for load transfer, is that correct?

@Ro I would imagine there is some load that goes to it. If your idea is to just not install some of the hardware, I highly discourage that.
