Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • Correct Leaf Spring for Trailer with Lippert 3,500 lb Axle
Thank you for the photo! I was able to use the serial number on your axle to determine which is the correct replacement leaf spring for your trailer. For this, you are going to want to use the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e57SR. The measurement you provided of 26" long is correct but the leaf spring needs to be measured while unloaded as it will lengthen while a load is present. If you were to take the leaf spring off of the trailer it would measure 25-1/4" unless badly worn. I don't recommend...

  • Trailer Leaf Springs Rated Slightly Higher Than 4,400 lb Axle
Hi Todd, To go with trailer leaf springs that are slightly stiffer than the 4,400 lb rating of your axle you can go with 4,500 lb springs or 5,000 lb springs. The right one is going to depend on the length of your current springs though, as you'll need to measure from center eye to center eye of your springs to get the right length. You'll want to measure with the trailer jacked up and no weight on the springs if you can, and since leaf springs flatten out a bit over time, you can go...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs and Hardware for 2022 Forest River Platinum 179DBKX
Hey Michael! I can definitely help you find replacement leaf springs and hardware for your travel trailer. However, we will need some more information to get the right parts. For the leaf springs, I need to know your axle capacity, as well as the length. Measuring the flat length is the most accurate, see the attached picture. For hardware I'm assuming you want new bolts and shackle straps. I highly recommend using a wet bolt kit for more durable parts so you can avoid any future failure....

  • Replacement Leaf Springs for 2017 Grand Design Imagine 2600RB
Thank you for providing that information. Leaf springs like the ones you have now typically match the axle capacity on your trailer. Although adding leaf springs with a slightly higher capacity won't hurt, it also is not necessary. Based on the leaf springs and and other information I'm sure you have 3,500 lb axles. Your standard diameter for this capacity would be 2-3/8". In addition to the capacity you want the eye to eye length to match, so we are looking at 25-1/4" long leaf springs. I...

  • Recommended 25-1/4" Long Leaf Springs
Hey Rob! Both the 25-1/4" long item # DX95CR and item # e44SR springs will work if you're replacing a 25-1/4" long leaf spring. They're close enough in capacity so long as you're not using too light of a spring with the 4,400 lbs item # DX95CR. How did you measure your leaf springs to come up with needing a 25-1/4" long one?

  • Looking For Replacement Leaf Springs For Boat Trailer
Hello Christopher, thanks for reaching out. We do carry leaf springs so we may have what you need. That said there is no way for me to look up your trailer to know exactly what spring you will need. Trailer manufacturers are just not that specific with their online literature. Basically I need to know the eye to eye length of your current springs, and the weight capacity of your axle. Jack up one side of the trailer so you can measure the springs when unloaded. Then your axle capacity...

  • Difference Between the etrailer 4 and 5 Leaf Springs
Kevin, the only difference between a 4 leaf spring # e44SR and a 5 leaf spring # e34SR is that the 4 leaf spring will use slightly thicker leaves, and is 1/8 of an inch shorter, so the difference between the two springs are pretty negligible in my opinion. So with that said, I'd suggest going up to the 5 leaf springs # e34SR instead. Especially since you mentioned that you've already had two break, which makes me think they might be getting overloaded.

To bump up to a heavier duty spring, you'll want the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long item # e34SR.

  • What Suspension Upgrades do I Need for My 2019 Powerlite Toy Hauler 29FBXL Tandem 5,100 Axles?
Hello Jose, Looking to upgrade the suspension on your 2019 Powerlite Toy Hauler 29FBXL? That’s always a great idea. With your tandem axle setup, it’s important to match the weight rating of the leaf springs to that of your axles. Going with a spring that’s rated significantly higher than your axle capacity can result in a stiff ride and may even cause damage to your suspension over time. You’ll need to double-check your eye-to-eye measurement on the leaf springs with the trailer unloaded,...

  • Will Adding Heavy Duty Springs Lift My Trailer?
No, that wouldn't help your clearance issues Kenneth. I do have a solution for you depending on what kind of axles your travel trailer has that will give you additional clearance. There are a couple of options to lift your trailer depending on if your axle's sit above or below the leaf springs. If your axles are already below your leaf springs the only option is the Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit item # RR23QX. This kit mounts to your spring hangers and moves the attachment...

  • How to Find Replacement Leaf Springs for 2021 Coleman Lantern 17B
Hey Ronney! To find replacement leaf springs you will need to measure their length and know your axle capacity. If you don't already know your axle capacity try checking the axle tag, it should be listed there. For the leaf springs, I recommend getting the flat measurement. This removes any guessing since they have probably flattened out over time. I went ahead and attached an article below with a video that shows how to measure. • Replacement, Heavier Duty 26 Inch Leaf Spring For 4,400 lb Axles
We do have a more robust option to replace your 072-078-00 double-eye springs, which are for 4,400 lb axles and have a 2,200 lb capacity, like you mentioned. So for a higher capacity option, I do not recommend going any higher than a 5,000 lb spring. Anything above that is going to give you a very stiff, bouncing, uncomfortable ride. So I recommend going with either of the following: - 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,500-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # e27SR - 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for...

It's okay to replace leaf springs with ones rated for more weight and pretty common to do so but keep in mind, the higher you go the rougher the ride will be. If you have a utility trailer then I'd probably opt for the higher rated 5,000 lb springs, 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 5,000-lb Trailer Axles part # e44SR. If you have a camper trailer then I'd probably opt for the lower rated 4,000 lb springs, 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles part # e57SR.

  • Recommended Replacement 1-3/4 Inch Wide Leaf Springs for a Boat Trailer
Thanks for the picture and all of the information! Those dimensions do not match up to a leaf spring we currently have but I do have a close option which I think will work. When leaf springs are measured for replacement we ask people to jack the trailer up, on one side, to take the weight off of the springs. Over the years the springs will stretch out and a 10 year old trailer could very likely have started out with a shorter leaf spring. Another way to accurately measure is to go from...

Hey Jaime, yes you can replace your 25-1/4 inch 3,500 lb axle leaf springs with a 5k rated axle spring like the part # e44SR. This will increase the suspension's weight capacity and might make the ride quality a little rougher but it would fit and work just fine.

  • Replacement Leaf Spring Solution for Dexter D52 Axle with 5,200 lb Capacity
As long as the axle the won't exceed 5,000 lbs the trailer leaf spring # e44SR would work great since it has a 5k capacity. If you need the full capacity of your axles you'd have to move up to a 6k spring with the part # e34SR instead. This would be rated a little high and could potentially give you a stiffer ride, but it would still work great. I do want to note that using 6k leaf springs doesn't increase the capacity of the trailer, and that you would still be limited to the 5.2k rating...

You need to measure from the center of one eye of the leaf spring to the center of the other to get the proper length. However, since yours are flat, they have stretched quite a bit. I can definitely point you in the right direction. Leaf springs can expand up to 1" when under a load. If yours measured 26" with weight on them, I would be looking at a 25-1/4" long spring as a replacement. If you want to beef up the suspension a bit, we have the # e44SR which is a 4 leaf 25-1/4" long spring for a 5,000 lb axle. We also have the # e34SR which is a 5 leaf 25-1/4" long spring for a 6,000 lb axle. Both of these springs are 1-3/4" wide, which is standard width for a double...
