Hi, I bought a used Palomino 500 SS Back-Pack and have mounted it on a Toyota Tacoma (Hilux in South Africa) with 4 ratchet straps to existing bed mounts. I have added 2 per side additional leaf springs at the rear and a 2 inch spacer system up front. All seems to be OK, except I notice the Cab Over moves up/down a lot on dirt roads. Should I add Air Shocks at the rear? Should I incorporate a Spring loaded mounting system at the front? There are only +/- 6 Truck Campers in South Africa! Thanks in advance for feedback. Regards, Hendrik
With a lot of up-and-down movement, a good set of air springs or sumo springs will definitely make a difference. Keeping your ride level will be the best thing you can do to prevent the camper from moving up and down. The rear will be the important one, but it wouldn't hurt to add some to the front.
I'm debating soft-sided truck campers with and without an overhang on my Toyota Tundra. Are there pros/cons to overhang in a truck camper?
The advantage of an overhang would be more room, the advantage of not having the overhand would be a lighter load for your truck. You'll want to compare camper weights with what your truck can handle and purchase accordingly. One thing to keep in mind is that your truck would likely benefit from having some suspension enhancement at the rear. This will help keep your truck more stable and help limit the amount of squat that you see.
I bought 2012 artic fox 990 camper from private party but don't have tie downs for my 2009 F 350 long bed diesel. I can use Torklift type frame mounted toe down brackets for front but what about rear. I have a treckstep on driver side near bumper that I think attached to the same spot on the frame as the frame mounted bracket so can I use the happyjack chromed connectors that go on my factory bumper and not interfere with the campers extension behind the bed of the truck? thanks
It does look like your TrekStep will interfere with a rear TorkLift tie-down bracket. Since you're wanting to retain the use of your TrekStep I'd go with the HappiJac # LC182910-182971 instead.
