Video Transcript for Hopkins 7-Way Trailer Connector Installation

Today on our trailer we're going to be installing the Hopkins Endurance 7-way trailer connector for the trailer end with a holder that holds a 7-way, part number HM48500. Let's begin by showing you what the Hopkins 7-way plug looks like. Here's the holder for it. Just simply snap in place like this. What this is for is it will allow you to attach it to the trailer so that the wire's not hanging down low when you're not using it. Gives you a good place to store it. Now on this particular trailer we have a section of wire that has 7 wires in it, so it's a 7-wire cord coming off.

That's what we're going to be attaching here to our plug. We're going to first need to undo this little Phillips-head screw here to open up the plug so that we can wire it. Next we're going to go ahead and take our razor knife and we're going to have to trim back some of the black covering that's over the wires. Now as you can see, our wires are a little big to be fitting through this rubber grommet here so I'm going to go ahead and trim that down so that it fits nice and tight around the wiring. Slide the rubber grommet up onto our black section of the wire.

You'll also want to go ahead and pull the connector end out away from the housing. Now if you look just above where the screw is there's some little initials that are written for each location. Before we get started and make all of our connections let's go ahead and go over what each color of the wires do and what each of the initials stamped in here do. The white wire will go to the ground. The ground on this one will have a GD stamped near the screw. The electric brake wire will be the blue wire.

There's an EB stamped into it. The right turn and brake, that will be the brown wire. The left turn and brake on this wiring harness, we'll be using the red wire for that location. TM: this is taillights. We'll be using the green wire for that.

The center location on this plug has a BU stamped on it, or the reverse circuit for back up. On this wiring harness that would be the yellow wire. Our final wire here, the black wire, will be connected in with the 12 volt charge circuit. Now let's go ahead and make our connections. We'll need to strip back a little bit of wire from each end and loosen the screw at each location and slide the stripped section of wire underneath and retighten. Once you have all the wires connected, this being the top, your wiring should look like this. Now that we have all of our wires connected, now we're ready to put the outer casing back in place. Now we'll need to go ahead and choose the location to mount our holder. Now the screws that come with the holder will not go through this metal so we're going to need to change over and we're going to use a couple self-tapping screws instead to attach the holder. Just going to loop it up and over the top of the trailer just because that's wire is pretty long on this one. You can slide it into the holder and that way it keeps the wire in the plug up off the ground, as well as helps protect it because our connection point here is facing down, allowing any water to run out of it. With that, that will conclude the installation of the Hopkins Endurance 7-way trailer connector for the trailer end, part number Hm48500. .

I really wanted to like this item 48500, but after using only once, I decided to replace with model 48510 (Metal). I obviously like the product and ergonomic designed since I brought another (better) one. Night and day difference. The cons on this product is 1. I'm using on a boat trailer. The housing felt like putting together a cheap plastic toy. When wired and assembled the plug would still move a little and was not completing snug within the unit. I can see no way it could keep out rain, no less work on a boat trailer. 2. There is only one screw and it's very easy to strip when trying to tighten to a snug fit. I would attribute this to the quality and the very short screw supplied. My unit stripped on the second try, hence the other model. Personally I found model 48510 to be a much better product. For one, it has two screws (the other screw actually secures the plug to the METAL housing within the unit). As a result, no movement in plug, and thus no movement in wire connections. More metal means less plastic. It also comes with a longer and bigger screw for a completely snug application that I now feel comfortable using in a marine environment. Unit 48510 feels solid - like professional equipment. My opinion is spend the few dollars and spring for the better model. 662510

I loved the concept of a robust RV style plug with holder. Unfortunately the design is flawed to three different failure modes. My trailer has the heavy duty, 7 conductor wire used in larger trucks. 1) The first failure occurred by using a too small a screw to hold the sides together. It's design is split down the middle with only the center screw to hold it together. Rain easily gets inside the connector as the split shell design is too thin and opens up at the slightest change of cable angle. 2) The screw strips easily as well. 3) The blade connectors inside the plug are not well retained and can slip back into the connector. This is especially exciting with the ground wire, as trailer brakes are important going down hill. I would not recommend this product and replaced mine with a cheaper, more robust design that I have used over the years. 426018

I was pleased with the delivery time and the simplicity of the product. However, when I removed the old plug, I was unable to trace the original connections. There were no instructions using the color coded wires coming from the trailer. However, after some time on the internet, I was able to find a diagram that matched the same color of wires and eventually got the wiring connected correctly. 218223

The product is holding up well. About what can be expected from plastic in the elements. It is an acceptable product for the price.

Don't buy this product if you wiring cord covering the seven wires going to your traileris heavy duty. You will have a VERY difficult time terminating the wires in the plug and then getting everything back together. The plastic handle on the back of the plug and the metal frame that it mounts to leave almost no room for the wiring. 42902

What do you mean when you say, if you wiring cord covering the seven wires going to your traileris heavy duty.My application is to install five wire to the connector. Will that be difficult?ThanksJim

I think Bob H. is referring to the size of the wire bundle he has on his trailer that he needed to fit into the connector. If you have a full 7-wire bundle, particularly that uses heavier gauge wires, it could be problematic fitting it into the connector. I've emailed Bob H. to let him know about your question and he can come back and add anything he might have.

Im not sure what gauge wire the OP was using but my insulated cord of 3 12 ga. and 4 14 ga. wires fit perfectly!

I like the design of tnis connector. It is plastic but seems like it will hold up. Perfect match for the multi-tow vehicle end connector. The directions are clear also. Had no problems installing it. 18148

Well built product. Easy wiring instructions. Purchased the truck side of this Hoppy product also (HM48480). These are replacements for old wiring connectors and these are a much better product than what I orginally had on both the truck and trailer. 13314
