An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall when loaded. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride when loaded or towing because the rubber has more travel.

Easy to install. They work great!

by:

Never showed up in time.

by:

Reviewed with the vent covers I purchased. I would highly recommend adding these or other suspension products especially for Class A.
I chose the Timbren because I could install them without taking the tires off and without drilling any additional holes in the chassis.

by:

very pleased

by:

Bought the timbren rear suspension bump stops to help with rear sag in our 2011 Suburban. We pull a 6000 lb travel trailer. Half way through our 8000 mile trip out west, the automatic leveling system failed. Dealer wanted $xxxx. to fix. Decided to finish the trip Without the repair. No issues. Actually we still haven’t repaired the leveling system and taken two additional trips to Florida and North Carolina. Need I say more. The Timbren stops work great.

by:

Very easy to install but not sure they help much. It appears to make my ride much rougher as it doesn't seem they have my shock absorption.

by:

Exactly what I needed, easy to install. Very fast delivery as always.

by:

We had these installed about 1 year ago on a 2015 Lexus GX460 to help with towing a horse trailer. On the stock suspension, there was a noticeable sag on the back end of the car when towing that was likely "fine" but was concerning for us over the long term.

Since installing this suspension system we are more confident towing a heavy load behind us. It did make things slightly "bumpier" when not towing anything, but we probably wouldn't have even noticed if we weren't looking for it.

by:

Love the design and simplicity of the product. Unfortunaly one of nuts that is welded to the inside of the bracket was just floating around in the box when I opened it up. It didnt look like anyone had tampered with it, maybe a quality control issue as it was a little rusty because of some poor welds. Im on a time crunch so I ended up making it work but definetly bummed I recieved a sub par $xxx product.

by:

Ordered type Timbren system. Had a question before buying, sent email and within an hour it was answered. Ordered and installed with no issues.

by:

Works great. Holds back end up like its suposed to

by:

These things are great. I put them on 2011 Honda Odyssey with 180,000 miles. We road trip a lot and load the van to the weight limit (at least…). They do engage with moderate to heavy loads. I only had a half inch between the axel and the bottom of the Timbren after loading the vehicle and when the family entered the vehicle I am sure we were resting on the Timbren. Felt much more confident with these things on. I pull a small camper (pop up—2,000 lbs loaded) too and love these for that.

I had my mechanic put these on when he changed out my shocks and coil springs in the rear. Think he charged me like $60 since he was already in there.

by:

Easy to install and works perfect NO more sag on my truck I have push it past its rated limit and never had any issue.

by:

Works great, easy install

by:

Works flawlessly

by:

Terrible, ride. jarring.

by:

Quick service and delivery. Parts were in stock. Overall great service!

by:

Install was a breeze, can't wait to tow our camper with these babies on the Tundra

by:

Quick delivery and exactly as described!

by:

The vent covers and Timbren products were shipped quickly and everything I needed was included. They were very easy to install, 3 covers done in 20 minutes.
Timbren suspension products I chose because of ease of installation, no additional drilling, no taking the tires off. These did take some time but we’ll worth the effort, handling greatly improved. Also added Safe-T-Plus steering.

by:

Fantastic. Nothing to leak or tear up

by:

So far so good easy install

by:

I think that they are awful. I was told that I couldn’t return them. Upon me purchasing them you did not have the item I was specifically looking for and I spoke to one of your salesman who recommended these and said they were the same thing. Which they are absolutely not. So I would say I am totally displeased not necessarily for the product but for the lack of knowledge from the salesman don’t really know if the product is in good working condition because it’s not the product I was looking for. So now I’m stuck with something I can’t use.

by:

I have a 1991 Mazda B2600I 4x4. I would give this product a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the fact that it didn't exactly fit my vehicle as advertised. I had to modify things a bit to make it work. Other than that the product preforms as advertised as far as I can tell so far. I haven't really hauled any overly heavy loads yet but I have noticed the difference. Would recommend the product though you may want to call to double check the fit if you have an older make and model.

by:

Quick delivery & excellent product for those 3/4 ton truck owners who wish they purchased a 1 ton instead

  • Best Way to Prevent Sagging Suspension When Towing a Trailer
For sag from towing a trailer the best recommendation I can make is actually a weight distribution system. Suspension enhancement will help level your truck while towing. But the advantage to a weight distribution system is that it levels the vehicle by distributing the tongue weight of the trailer up to the front axle of the vehicle as well. This will help greatly with handling and braking, especially in an emergency situation. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is...

  • Recommendation for Fighting Sag When Towing with a 2010 Toyota Tundra and Weight Distribution
Weight distribution (WD) systems actually take on the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle (your 2010 Toyota Tundra) as well as the tongue weight (TW) of the loaded trailer. This is why you are finding that your WD system isn't performing as well when you load down the bed of your pickup. For example, the Equal-i-zer # EQ37100ET has a TW range of 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs. If you were using this system and the 709 lb TW of your trailer plus the cargo behind the rear axle...

Suspension enhancement systems like Timbren springs are perfect for the scenaro you're describing. These solutions supplement your factory suspension but don't necessarily increase your capacity. • Towing Capacity Limits for a 2010 Toyota Tundra
As long as you stay under the 10,300 pound mark you should be fine. Currently your trailer and gear estimate would weigh 9,100 pounds. Take a look at the rig when the trailer and truck are fully loaded as though you were ready to hit the road. If the Tundra is sagging in the rear, I would suggest using some sort of suspension enhancement system. They spread the load to to more springs so there is a total of 4 points on the axle that weight rides on. Timbren makes hollow rubber springs...

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2015 Coachmen Freelander 22 ft Class C
Suspension enhancement would be your best option since you mentioned having an aluminum frame trailer. That we've found there isn't an aluminum frame trailer manufacturer who will state that you can use weight distribution with their trailers. They just put a different kind of stress on the trailer frame. So the best option I have would be the SuperSprings part # SSA22 which installs on the leaf spring you have now and gives you 2,200 lbs of additional suspension support.

Hey Erwin, I always recommend matching the enhancement to the weight you plan on towing while also factoring in your vehicle's payload capacity to avoid affecting your unloaded ride quality. With the payload capacity of your Gladiator being only 1,200lbs and the camper weighing in at 1,000lbs the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SS42XR (1,400lb capacity) would be more than enough to help support your suspension with the camper loaded in without being so stiff that it becomes uncomfortable....

I recommend the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TTORTUN4 over the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SSR-612-47 for your 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport. The Timbrens have a much higher weight capacity at 6,000lbs versus the SumoSprings at 1,000lbs. This will give you a better ride level and stabilization when you are towing your car hauler. • Should Timbren's Be Engaged w/ a Weight Distribution System?
Yes, this is normal. The Timbrens will engage first when you hook up the trailer and the weight distribution hitch will then work with the remaining sag. Just make sure you're not overloading your truck's tongue weight capacity and the weight distribution system is set up correctly. Any gear in your bed will add to the trailer's tongue weight.
