Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

I purchased this item to install on a 2013 Toyota Tundra 5.7L V8, 4x4. It took about a week for the product to arrive. Once I received it, I took an 18V Battery Operated Impact Wrench and removed the U-bolts from the Springs, removed the OEM Bumper mounts. Installed the Timbrens, retightened the U-bolts and torqued the bolts to factory specs. Total time to do the install, 30 minutes! Also, I want to mention that I never jacked up the truck. The ride quality is the same when the vehicle is unloaded. When I hook up to the Travel Trailer, the truck doesn't squat like it use to and I don't get the bottoming out or rocking effect when I hit a waving section of pavement when pulling the TT. I'm very happy with my purchase. 181778

Installed these on 7/6/2018. Install was pretty strait forward. Sure made a difference on the ride height. It is one of our service vehicles that we have, so we shall see if the driver of it notices the difference. 539447

I bought these as a replacement for "air bags" which I had two different sets, which failed over 10 years. i would say this product is helpful with pulling a trailer and lighter loads but from time to time I haul heavier loads and this product doesn't offer as much help/support as the air bags. This product is a little cheaper and if they don't weaken over time they will be a help. I have added additional leaf springs to two different pickups but then you end up with a stiffer ride full time. 421383

Very easy to install. Works great. Didn’t seem to affect my ride. Levels up my rig when I put the camper on or hook up to a trailer or piece of equipment. Love it and would highly recommend it. 570299

Comments
Timbren suspension systems wont have a whole lot of effect on vehicle ride except during cornering or when the vehicle is under load. Once a load is applied to the suspension, either from cargo or from the tongue or pin weight of a trailer, the suspension will compress enough for the Timbren Aeon springs to contact the axle.

I recently ordered and installed this suspension enhancement for my 2017 Nissan Titan SV 2WD, Crew Cab. I will be road testing it next week with a heavy duty 20' flat trailer, carrying a 2,800 lb car, 500 lb 4 wheeler and misc items for an estimated total of near 6.5-7k lbs of trailer weight. In addition, I might be carrying a 450 lb go-kart in the truck bed. I feel this will be a good test of the products' capability and performance. Approximately 2 weeks ago, I towed an 8.5' x 20' cargo trailer weighing out at nearly 9k lbs on the same 500 mile trip. For that trip, I had the stock suspension setup and used a weight distribution (WD) system. The trip went smoothly, but I'm hoping that this suspension enhancement will eliminate the need to go through the WD hookup process. A followup review to come. I've given this a 5 star review due to the excellent customer service I received from Ashley. I was traveling back down to Florida from up north and had questions regarding compatibility with my truck. She called the company, Timbren, to verify that it would work and answered all my questions, since I was driving at the time. She even pushed the order through quickly and got it out that same day. I was amazed when I received it yesterday, less than 2 days after I ordered it and installed it in less than an hour. This is truly an example of the excellent level of customer care that etrailer provides its patrons and exactly why they are my first choice for all my trailering needs. Thank you. 725798

Just finished installing the TTORTUN4 Suspension kit on my Tundra. It took me, with limited mechanical ability, about an hour to install and was a simple and easy installation. My truck loaded with tools, a construction canopy, and heavy bed-slide sits up in the back like its unloaded, rides great, and handles so much better! I'm super pleased! Thanks so much! 340924

20 min install tops. Took more time retorquing the nuts after loading. Couple tips: only remove the two rear nuts on each u bolt to slip out the old bump stop to replace with the timbren. Go ahead and spray those nuts with pb blaster or wd 40 to help ease removal. I used a breaker bar so it was no problem. I would suggest that once you have the timbrens in place, I would jack up the rear under the receiver hitch (I used wood blocks) and slip your socket and extension back into the bump stop to retorque the 17mm bolt. I also went ahead and retorqed the nuts once I hooked up trailer. As far as towing now, wow what a difference. Virtually eliminated all front axle hop from road dips making for a much more confident and stable ride. 26' coach, 4900# dry. Pics are unloaded and then loaded. 270693

I just wanted you to know that prior to my installation, this Coachman with a hitch weight of 700+ pounds would push the rear down so much that there was barely daylight between the tire and the wheel well...but look at us now. This '04 Titan with 189,000 miles and original suspension is riding high. Your product helped me get the bed level and has reduced the sway on the trailer so much that it is hardly noticeable. I am very happy with my purchase, your follow-up and the results. 564348

2018 Toyota Tundra

Bought these for my new 2018 Toyota Tundra. On my previous 2010 Tundra, I had installed helper springs and decided to try Timbren's this time around. I bought 1/2" spacers, since I did not want the truck to sag too much. Not sure if you can see in the pictures, but with the 1/2" spacers, the Timbren's come into contact approximately 1/2" to 3/4". They can be a bit rough and bouncy once they come into contact, but no rougher or uncomfortable than with helper springs. Over all I am very happy with how they perform. The installation was very easy. Took me about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour. All you need is a 24" breaker bar, a ratchet wrench, and a 19mm deep socket. Unloosen the nuts enough to remove the existing bump stop and replace with the Timbren's. That's all it takes! 451415

Ive had the timbren 6k lb bumpstops on my 2018 tacoma for a year now. I put them on to help with any suspension sag when pulling my 4700lb camper and I have to say they do the job admirably. Next to no sag even before connecting my weight distribution hitch. They do hit kinda hard without a load but thats to be expected. Not noticeable at all until you're on a rough, bumpy road. 818741

I love my Timbrens! After a year of driving my Toyota Tundra 8 footbed with Timbrens under the rear, I can attest to the support they give. The rear no longer sags under heavy loads and my truck handles excellent with firewood and tools driving over the rough roads of the Adirondacks. When I turn, the truck doesn’t sway. They give me peace of mind when I’m driving which to me is invaluable. Timbrens were recommended to me over airbags for the harsh cold climate we have up north here and I love their simple design, quick installation, and no maintenance. I will be installing another pair in the front to haul a truck camper. I recommend them to anyone who regularly hauls a lot of weight. 810129

This is an amazing product. Took about 30 minutes total to install on my Toyota Tundra. That includes setting up and clean up. I pull a 20 foot flat bed trailer and a 30 foot travel trailer. This product really helps me when I do encounter bumps and uneven lanes. Helps keep my rig secure on the road and doesn’t interfere with normal everyday ride. I would definitely buy this product again and I most certainly would purchase from etrailer again. Great company, support and prices! 806644

These bump stops are great and very easy to install. They help keep my 2019 Tacoma leveled when towing my 5,000lbs trailer. I’m very happy and recommend them if you are planning to tow a trailer with your Tacoma. • Differences Between the Timbren and SumoSprings for a 2012 Toyota Tundra
For your 2012 Toyota Tundra CrewMax, you will want to use part # TTORTUN4 for the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System or part # SSR-610-47 for the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs. Both of these options will provide you with additional support that will help to reduce rear end sag while towing. They will also both work to reduce body roll, improve stability, and increase the life of your existing suspension components. The Timbren springs have a weight capacity of 6,000...
