Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

The Timbren suspension was delivered on time . The unit was installed using the instructions provided and took about 45 minutes for both sides of the rear axle. I have not put a load on the truck yet to see how it works. There is about 1" of clearance between the rubber timbren stops and the frame of the truck,so it hasn't affected the way the truck handles for now,I'll be able to tell more about it once I hitch my Travel Trailer up.The installation was done on a 2017 Nissan Frontier. 621664

I can't speak to ease of installation, I have a buddy with a car shop and it's just as easy to let him do it. As for ride with and without a load, this does what it says it will. Squat on my 2013 Nissan Frontier was greatly reduced when towing. There is a definite 'gallup' when you hit a small pot hole or bump in the road when under load, but it quickly fades away. I recommend these if you need occasional support but don't want to sacrifice unloaded ride. 145946

Product is excellent. From the time I took the parts out of the box until the time I lowered the truck of the jack it only took me 45 minutes to complete the installation. Easy to install with only a few basic tools. The truck no longer sways around corners. It may ride a little stiffer but barely noticible. Well worth the price. 51870

The order and shipping process was flawless -- the Timbrens arrived exactly when E-trailer said they would. An hour after they got here, I had them completely installed. As of this date (7/30/13), the posted instructions (and the ones that came with the Timbrens) are not quite correct for a new Tacoma, as I verified with a Timbren tech. (These are Tacoma-specific issues -- they may not apply to other trucks.) Do not jack the truck up. I ran the back tires up onto blocks (to give myself more room underneath) and set the parking brake. I put a jack stand under the differential -- probably not needed. I crawled under and did one side at a time -- loosen the u-bolts, remove the old bump stop, stick in the new Timbren, and tighten. Not technically demanding at all. My crawler dolly was very helpful. Some tips: use a 9/16 socket with an extension to put the nut onto the bolt inside the Timbren rubber spring and then tighten the bolt with an Allen wrench. When loosening the Tacoma's u-bolts, use a 3/4 socket. Depending on the clearance between the leaf springs and the frame, you may need to remove one side of the u-bolt assembly to install the Timbren because the angle of the baseplate is greater than the angle of the OEM bump stop. I was told that the u-bolt nuts on a Tacoma should be re-tightened with a torque wrench to about 70 foot/pounds. I found it a little tiring to lay on my back and torque the nuts, but then again I am verging on elderly. A young person in decent shape should have no trouble. I don't know yet if the Timbrens will help my saggy rear end when I am towing a trailer, but others have said that this will be very helpful. This is my second major purchase from E-trailer -- I am impressed with their selection, service, and pricing. 92404

I purchased this kit to keep my 2013 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Short Bed from bottoming out when it has a load in the bed. It really did the trick as well as improved the stability with or without a load. The only down side is that the suspension is much more stiff without a load in the bed. It took some getting used to, but after having them on for a couple months, it doesn't bother me. 106946

Since the Timbren install we have towed the camper on back roads with stop and go traffic as well as on the highway at 65 mph. The Pro4X does ride level and handles the added weight well. I wish I had a longer wheel base and a tandem axle trailer as on occasion we develop a slight up and down oscillation until the suspension settles down. It is noticeable when driving over long bridges. This is mainly due to the truck setup and not the Timbrens. We had this problem before the install and the Timbrens are making a difference.I have also hauled an estimated 780 lbs of hardwood flooring in the bed at 65mph and the truck handled it with no problem. It remained level and stable.

You might be able to adjust the tongue weight of the trailer and get that oscillation to settle. You want your tongue weight to be about 10-15% of the trailer total weight. Also if the trailer does not ride level, looking into getting a different drop length ball mount that will get the trailer level or even slightly nose down.

I put these on my 2014 Nissan Frontier SV (long box). Overloaded the truck for a move from Alaska to Michigan (3,000+ miles, took the long way to hit up all the national parks). Great ride all the way. Down side to not being adjustable, like airbags, it bucks when riding empty but I don't care. Note for installing, just because mount is centered on leaf spring does not mean it meets the frame/plate on center. Mount accordingly. 419997

This works great for leveling my truck when loaded. It also acts as a sway control device and is not harsh when unloaded. I had air bags before but they were constantly losing air and was high maintenance. I love the Tibren SES system! 640751

These are for a load like towing however I haven't used them for towing yet but daily driving they keep the truck from compressing the springs to the bump stops. I wish I could have all new suspension but my truck is 5 year's new with 50,000 mi 610977

Installed on my 2011 Tacoma TRD Off-Road Access cab long bed with a cab high shell. Unloaded the frame sits 1/2" above the rubber 'spring'. This is perfect such that around town and unloaded the drive is the stock suspension and when cornering they come into contact noticeably reducing roll. When the truck is loaded they come into full time contact providing a much superior ride with no bottoming, better ride height and greatly reduced roll. Really makes a difference on backcountry roads when loaded with camping gear. When I installed them last year I was concerned with the rubber potentially deteriorating, but since then they have been on many loaded camping trips on backcountry roads including a long trip from UT to AK/Yukon and back so they have been thoroughly tested with no signs of the rubber failing. Attached is photo showing ride height with easily 1,000 lbs of load added to the truck for an extended camping expedition. Even if you don't carry heavy loads or trailers, I would install these anyway just for the greatly improved roll resistance when daily driving. Cost is high but they work and last justifying the cost. 610686

These spring stops seem like a heavy duty quality product. Very easy installation on my 13 Nissan Frontier by jacking up vehicle under shock mounts and removing tire, then clean area with compressed air and remove clamp nuts with air gun (if owned) remove old stops and install new stops and retighten nuts. I have about 1/2" to 3/4" clearance as advertised. Have not been able to haul anything yet but am sure they will help greatly. Also do one tire at a time (Safety) sorry no pictures. etrailer was quick to process and ship order. Great Business. Thanks etrailer Dennis O. 170343

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I first put the Timbrens on the rear to help stop bouncing and porpoising on highways and bridge ends when towing. The rears have a gap and do not touch the springs until the truck is loaded, working great and keeping a smooth unloaded ride. The front Timbrens fit snugly and touch all the time. The ride is firm and a bit harsh with my unloaded truck having a snow plow spring option. When my trailer 30 ft trailer is hooked up, the front of the truck is slightly lighter. Towing with the Timbrens is nice and the bounce and rebound porpoising is very controlled. I would like the front Timbrens to be a little softer when the truck is unloaded, but I think these units are a nice add-on for better control, safety, and preventing damages. I had the fronts installed at the shop when rotating tires and a front end alignment. The rears installed easily. 691475

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I am dealing with Timbren. The washer for mounting the rubber spring to the mounting plate clearance hole is too small for the bolt diameter. The washer is not something you can get out without damaging in my opinion. The bolt also will not thread completely into the mounting plate because of poor threads ( not tapped correctly). Galling of bolt if you try to tighten. Very poor QC or inspection at Timbren or wherever. Once again, working eith Timbren on this. Maybe you should check you kits at etrailer!! 704185

Comments

I pulled the kits we have in stock and they check out fine. The washer inside the spring had the same diameter as the spring for the bolt. Could you send in a photo of your kit?

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Working great. I had read reviews about them being too stiff whem you aren't pulling a trailer, but it seems like they softened up a bit after first putting them on. I felt a few hard jolts going over speed bumps and such the first few days, but now I don't notice them at all when I don't have a trailer attached. They are still improving the ride with a heavy trailer. I'd give 5 stars but my mechanic neighbor had to help me install them because there was something wrong with the bolts that came in the package. It was a year ago and I can't remember the details. Without him I think I could have returned them and gotten a fix and installed them by myself. It's a very simple install when all the parts are in good shape. 549083

TOTALLY AWESOME PRODUCT.....Though I wished I had them when we trailered the hot rod out to New Hampshire last month. We received this item late as it was on back order for far too long. I did get a chance though to put the levelers through their paces when using our 18' lo-boy to haul large limbs, branches and other brush to compost site. The truck did NOT flinch and inch downward as it did WITHOUT the levelers. I liked too that the installation was basically pretty easy. I highly suggest going this way and leaving the air bags for the big truckers. Don't have to fuss with filling or deflating bags or dealing with leaky bags. This is a presto zippo installation and you can play "immediately". 550307

Comments

I couldnt be more happier with this product. Truck is still remaining relatively level, even with the hot rod in the enclosed trailer. Hot rod weighs in at 2200 pounds and nary a between truck and trailer. As in my earlier review, I HIGHLY recommend this product over air bags...so much LESS hassle .

Product came securely packaged and complete and quick. Took about 45 mins to install. I bought this to try to reduce the 3 1/2 inch sag at the hitch of my Lexus GX460. It did that well. I now only sag 2 inches that I feel is acceptable. The trailer has about 484 lbs weight. The ride doesn't seem affected and towing bounce(porpoising) is gone. Thank you etrailer. 560925

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I purchased a used pickup without any jounce bumpers. I ordered these to provide more support rather than going back with stock ones. I pull a 5th wheel and these keep the truck level with less bouncing around and bottoming out when towing. When I'm not towing they sit about an inch or inch and a half about the stops so they do not negatively impact the ride quality. They work as advertised and I'm pleased with them. 653123

After a 3000 mile trip with a 42' fifth wheel on a 2016 Chevrolet single rear wheel short bed 3500HD, I will say they made a difference. They took some of the bounce and the side to side rocking out of the truck. I would definitely put them on my next truck as well. 667565

Simple install. It takes longer to put the jack away then install the springs. It would take longer to make toast. The ride after is better than factory new. Great produt and as always great cust. service from etrailer. 350417

Hey guys, I'm 76 and I installed these in 30 minutes. Took longer to get the tools together and get under the truck than to remove old bumps tops and install new ones. Thanks etrailer 546853

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Purchased for Lexus GX460. Solves rear sag problem when towing with medium to heavy trailers. I don’t notice any difference in the ride when not towing a trailer with the helper springs. Should really come standard with the vehicle I’m the first place in order to utilize the towing capacity. I would highly recommend this cheap fix. 468046

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

got the product when stated , went on simple enough but used google to really see how things went together. Timbren doesn't give very good instructions with their product wish they would put diagram so as to be able to see how brackets go, but happy so far haven't put load on the truck yet that's coming up with a trip in august with my 30ft camper and truck loaded for trip guess will come back and let you know how the product works after the trip , but etrailer delivered when they said they would thanks will keep you in mind for future purchases. 544811

Product was purchased based on mechanics recommendation for a friends F250 being used to tow a thirty foot gooseneck 3 horse trailer with living quarters. Post installation performance was all we hoped for. Service from etrailer, before and after the sale, is what every mail order company should strive to achieve. I will not hesitate to utilize etrailer in the future. They are flagged in my favorites. 324435

  • Recommended Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement for a 2010 Toyota Tacoma With 4WD
  • There are a few different options that we have for you to install a Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System on your 2010 Toyota Tacoma that is 4WD. Please keep in mind that any suspension enhancement system will not increase your weight capacity. It is meant to supplement a suspension system that is in good working order. You should never exceed the weight-carrying capacity of your vehicle. If you plan on driving places that might not have a road then I recommend going with the Timbren...

  • Solution for Rear Sag on Nissan Frontier with Travel Trailer Hooked Up
  • We do have a nice selection of suspension enhancement products available for your 2015 Nissan Frontier, such as the TorkLift StableLoad Rear Suspension Upgrade # TLA7311 that you mentioned, however I'm not sure that any of them will provide you much more support than you are already getting with the Timbren Springs like # TTORTUN4L installed. Even though you said that you aren't really having any issues with sway or bounce, the best solution for the rear sag you are experiencing is with...

  • I do have a suspension enhancement option for your 2017 Toyota Tacoma that is compatible with the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2407, however, the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TTORTUN4L and the Roadmaster Active Suspension Kit part # RAS4514-SAT will not work. In order to use a set of suspension enhancements with your currently installed Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs, I recommend the TorkLift StableLoad Rear Suspension Upgrade part # TLA7311...

  • Height Of Timbren Springs and Vertical Wheel Travel Loss In 2019 Toyota Tacoma
  • When installing any Timbren system on the 2019 Toyota Tacoma you should have about 1/2" to 1-1/2" between the frame and the spring after installation. You won't necessarily be losing wheel travel when you use a Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System on the Tacoma. I recommend either the # TTORTUN4 system if you have 4 leaf springs in the rear suspension or # TTORTUN4L if you have 3 leaf springs in the rear suspension. • Comparing Timbren Suspension Enhancement for 2018 Toyota Tacoma
  • There are six different Timbren kits for suspension enhancement that all fit your 2018 Toyota Tacoma. Four are for the rear and two are for the front. Of the front two, part # TTOFTUN4 is designed for adding support when you put a snow plow on the truck and # TABSTOF is an active bump stop that cushions the shock when off-roading. A couple of the rear kits are designed to support the rear of the truck when either towing a trailer or adding weight in the bed. Use part # TTORTUN4 if...

  • For your 2017 Toyota Tacoma, I recommend using the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TTORTUN4 because you have 4 leaf springs. If you had 3 leaf springs then you would want to use the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TTORTUN4L. The bump stop attaches to the top of the leaf spring pack and makes contact with the bottom of the frame rail. If this distance has been altered with the leveling kit you have installed on your truck, then you will need to use...

The difference is that kit # TABSOSR is intended for vehicles without a U-Bolt Flip Kit. And # TTORTUN4L is designed for vehicles with 3 Leaf Springs in the rear suspension. To avoid a stiff ride a better option would be air bags, # F2407. They will allow you to adjust the air pressure in the bags for the best ride quality. • Will Timbrens Void Warranty of a 2015 Nissan Frontier
  • Timbrens like the part # TTORTUN4L would not void the warranty of your 2015 Nissan Frontier as long as you install them properly. When you install an aftermarket part on your vehicle you are protected by the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act. This act states, in part, that unless the installation and the part caused a problem then the warranty cannot be voided. I recommend looking it up online.

  • Rear Helper Springs for a 2013 Toyota Tacoma
  • Helper springs is a general term that can be applied to all suspension enhancement products. So what it comes down to is jounce style springs versus air bags. Jounce style springs are excellent for the same kind of load all the time, such as towing a trailer. But they also work independently side to side. Air bags are a great option for carrying different size loads in the bed. When set up for it, air bags will allow you to level the bed side to side to compensate for varying load sizes. If...

  • Using a Weight Distribution System to Level a 2006 Toyota Tacoma and Cargo Trailer
  • The best way to reduce sag at the rear of a vehicle when towing a trailer is to use weight distribution. I recommend a system that has built-in dual cam sway control to prevent trailer sway before it starts. For the right sized system, you will need to know the tongue weight and gross trailer weight of the trailer when it is fully loaded and ready to tow. For example, if the tongue weight of the trailer is 400 pounds, you would need a system with a 200 to 600 pound tongue weight capacity....

I would recommend going with the SumoSprings though as we have found they provide a smother ride quality than the Timbrens which tend to be a bit harsh.
