An example of sag on a truck's rear axle under a heavy load. The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System levels the vehicle.

When hauling heavy loads in the cargo area or by pulling a trailer, you will often see the rear of the vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but more of the vehicle's weight as well. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall vehicle handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. The resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with the vehicle's factory suspension to keep the vehicle level and improve your driving performance.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system has a vehicle-specific bracket that will be bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits one inch above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape provides increased resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping the vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's or passenger's side of the vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer helping to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or passing of a semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to the vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside quicker.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened as the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Compared to the competition:

Timbren's suspension enhancement systems are much easier to install than air springs - no air hoses are needed to be run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments necessary. The rubber construction causes Timbren's springs to be more elastic than similar products constructed of micro-cellular urethane. More elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

Received my rear suspension enhancement kit yesterday for my 2013 F-150. It was delivered 3 days from order by etrailer and was a breeze to install. I have not towed my trailer yet but I believe it will be just what I was looking for. 243483

Easy installation, less than a hour, excellent overload protection and the best thing no maintenance or possibility of product failure as there would be with an air assist system. 361569

Purchased a Timbren SES (suspension enhanchment system) From eTrailer.com. It was on my doorstep in a few days. It was the correct one for my truck and was a simple bolt on installation. Haven't towed my 8,000 lb toy hauler trailer yet but the truck sits level now with the 1,100 lb. tongue weight. Had previously purchased a Tongue Weight scales from eTrailer.com. Very pleased with their on line service and products. 184692

Installed in minutes without taking wheels off of my 2014 FX4. (Assemble rubber on bracket in vice, then install on frame). Can be done. Simple and effective. Well worth the money, couldn't imagine towing my HT fifth wheel without it. 464165

2010 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

this is a super product. This is my 2nd set of Timbren "overload springs". my first set was on my 2002 trailblazer and this set is on my 2010 Ford F150. In both cases, it has kept my vehicle perfectly level (I measured) when I loaded up with lumber, cement, sand, or any other heavy cargo. it works just as advertised. this time I loaded it up with 500 pounds of water softener salt to give me some traction through the winter. It works a lot better than Sam because I can use it up throughout the year. 10 years ago, the installation on my trailblazer was a little difficult. This time on my F150, it was a piece of cake. However, I tried for an hour to install one without removing the wheels and couldn't do it. So I got out the floor jack and jack stands (yes, I'm a little lazy at 67), pulled the 2 back wheels, and it took 20 minutes total, including pulling the wheels and putting them back on. great product and good service from etrailer.com. 109970

I purchased a kit for my Ford F150 mainly for towing, the kit was super easy to install but was a bit rough for my liking at first. The problem appeared to be that I run my truck bed loaded with a few hundred pounds most of the time so the kit was much closer to the axle and would tap the spring bumpers when I hit minor bumps. I removed the 1" spacers and things work great now, no problems and it keeps my truck more level and eliminates me having to cringe when the loaded rear end hits a dip in the road. I think the kit provides a good safety net by spreading the load onto more points of contact. Good product, but could use different spacers of a variety of thickness to personalize the kit to the load of the truck as everyone buys these to address a variety of weights and issues. 261427

2010 Ford F-150

I ordered this product to assist the suspension on my F-150 so it did not drag as much when towing and that is exactly what it did. Overall the install was pretty easy. I ended up with about a finger width of room between the bottom of the spring and the axle after the install. If I would have put the spacer in it would have been riding right on the axle and would have affected the every day drive. I may try it on a test run when towing. Before the install the back end of the truck would sag 7 inches at the hitch and 4.5 inches at the fender. After adding the springs the back end now sags about 4 inches at the hitch and just under 3 inches at the fender so basically it cut the sag to about half! The fast shipping from etrailer made this a great experience! 221703

These work as advertised and do a great job of preventing the back end of the truck from dropping too low when hauling or towing. When pulling our 8000# trailer the truck ride is relatively level. I would prefer they were maybe a 1/2" to 1" shorter so the unloaded suspension would have a bit more travel. With a cap on the truck there is less than a couple of inches of travel before the stops are hit and it does make the ride more harsh. I knew this would be an issue with these. They are considerably less costly than airbags with zero maintenance concerns. 611406

The install of the trf1504d went without a hitch. No need to remove the wheels, just jack up the rear of the truck so there is room of the rachet with extension to install the bolt through the rubber shock/spring. I had about one and one half inches between the axle housing and the rubber shock. I have not pulled the 5th wheel yet but can't imagine that it will not do the job. I don't know how the ride quality will be but will find out soon. 365589

The Timbren kit was a snap to install! I had 1.5in gap with no spacer so I added it in after. it definitely stiffens the ride empty at highway speeds. I plan to pull a 29ft camper this weekend with it. we will see after that whether the 1" spacers stay or not. Simple effective mod for reducing a saggy rear end and handling. 361026

Still going great, when I am not towing I can definitely feel an increase in stiffness, which I wish that had a more progressive rate to reduce this hit I get when the bed is empty and no trailer on the hitch.Still a great product, just a minor inconvience

I am very happy with this product. Makes towing so much more enjoyable. You may notice a little stiffer ride when you are driving on rougher roads but wasn't enough for me to dislike this product. I noticed less body roll when cornering which is a plus. Main thing is if you are trying to pick between these and airbags ask yourself these questions. How much do I really tow to justify cost difference plus these went on in about an half hour for the set. But the biggest thing I looked at was no maintenance when not in use and having to air the airbags up when I was towing. Of course you will have more control over set up while towing. Bottom line it does exactly what it said it would do for my 2011 F150. 302087

But when not towing or carrying a load in the truck bed you will likely experience a stiffer ride, more jarring on bumps than the stock suspension. • Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW Item # EQ37060ET is rated for 200 to 600 pounds of total tongue weight. Total tongue weight is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. If your total tongue weight is between 200 and 600 pounds then this system will work for you. This system has built-in sway control...

  • Rear Helper Springs for a 2015 Ford F-150 with B&W Gooseneck Hitch Installed
  • I do have a couple of solutions for you but the Firestone kit # F2582 will not fit because its mounting brackets will interfere with the B&W brackets on your 2015 Ford F-150. What will work for air bag kits will be # AL88284 for a 4x4 or # AL57268 for a 2-wheel drive model. I have included links to the instructions so you can see that the brackets will not interfere. You can also use a Timbren kit, # TFR1504D for a 4x4 or # TFR1502D for a 2x4. The benefit of these systems is that there...

  • Timbren vs. Firestone Ride Rite
  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFR1504D is designed to engage when a load is put upon your 2013 Ford F-150. The picture shows the basic fundamentals of how the Timbrens work so you can see that when your truck is not loaded, the Timbrens are at full size and when a load is put upon your truck the Timbrens compress. My technical contact at Ride-Rite confirmed that the psi should be set between 5 and 10 which should not alter your ride or raise your truck when not loaded....

  • Do Timbren Spacer Kits Require Longer Bolts As Well
  • When you use a spacer kit like the part # A25723-90AHOO with a Timbren like part # TFR1504D you will have to provide a longer bolt. You will want to go with a 1 inch longer Grade 5 or higher bolt from your local hardware store.

  • Using Weight Distribution and Suspension Enhancement Together on 2012 Ford F-150
  • It's easy to see where the confusion may lie so I'll do my best to try and clarify for you. If there is sag on the rear of your 2012 Ford F-150 that is caused by a heavy load in the truck bed as you are towing with your weight distribution system, then suspension enhancement such as the Timbren # TFR1504D would be a solution. However, if there is sag without a heavy load and you are towing with a weight distribution system then it is likely that you have either the incorrectly rated...

  • Will Timbren's Work with a B&W Gooseneck Hitch on a 2012 Ford F-150
  • Yes, the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TFR1502D for 2WD or part # TFR1504D for 4WD will work with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch part # BWGNRK1104 you have installed in your 2012 Ford F-150. The mounting brackets do not interfere with one another as one mounts underneath the frame (Timbren's) and one mounts on the side of the frame (B&W). The Timbrens will provide excellent support when using your truck to pull your gooseneck trailer. In addition...

  • Compatibility of Timbren Suspension Enhancement with 5th Wheel Hitch on 2013 Ford F150
  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Aeon springs for 4WD vehicles, part # TFR1504D will be compatible with your existing mounting brackets for your Pullrite SuperGlide. The Timbren springs simply take the place of the factory bump stops mounted to the underside of the frame members directly above the rear axle. If the brackets from your hitch did not interfere with the bump stops, they will not prevent the Timbren springs from being installed. I have confirmed this with my Timbren representative. I...

  • Will Timbren Springs Work With Weight Distribution Hitch on 2014 Ford F-150?
  • Yes, you can absolutely use the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFR1504D on your 2014 Ford F-150 with a weight distribution hitch to pull your camper. The Timbrens will not interfere in any way with your weight distribution system as they simply sit above your truck's rear axle so you're fine using both.

  • Installation of a Timbren Vehicle Suspension on a 2014 Ford F-150
  • Most likely there is a bolt holding the factory bump stop on your 2014 F-150. You simply raise your truck up off the ground and use a 13mm socket to remove the bolt. Take a look at the video I included to see the removal of the bump stop and installation of the suspension, even though it's on a 2010 F-150 and different Timbren suspension # TFR1504D. Once done, you will be ready to install the new Timbren rear suspension enhancement # TFR1502D you referenced. Ideally, the amount of space...

  • Suspension Assist or Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2012 Ford F150 FX4
  • Actually a weight distribution system would be a better option for you. Suspension enhancement will help you tow the trailer more level, but a WD will help with that and since it transfers some of the tongue weight to the front axles it will improve braking and handling considerable. Especially in emergency situations. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes...

  • Will the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Bags # F2525 Fit on a 2013 Ford F-150 With Reese 5th Wheel Hitch
  • I do have a rear suspension enhancement option for your 2013 Ford F-150, however, the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs, # F2525, are not compatible with most fifth wheel frame brackets that mount to the outboard side of the vehicles frame rail. Most fifth wheel brackets block the frame and it is not recommended to install the Ride-Rite kits on top of fifth wheel brackets. If you have a fifth wheel kit that uses the 4 individual universal L-brackets, then the Ride-Rite kit may...

  • Recommended Camper Tie Downs for 2013 Ford F150
  • According to my contact at CR Brophy, the # TDSF tie downs are not compatible with 2011 or newer trucks, but their # HSSF tie-downs would indeed be compatible with your truck, as long as it has a regular (not stepside) bed. Drop in (hard plastic) bed liners will need to be extensively trimmed but spray-on liners are not a problem. You will also need a hardware package, part # TDHP. If installing the camper causes the rear of the truck to squat, a suspension enhancement product like the...

  • Rear Timbren Helper Springs for a 2005 Ford F-150 4x4
  • Well, as they say at Timbren, you can never have enough S-E-S! For the rear of your 2005 Ford F-150 you would use one set of # TFR150D. I have linked a video showing installation of this kit for you. Set # TFR1504D will not fit the 2005 Ford F-150. It is designed for 2009 to 2015 Ford F-150 trucks with stock height excluding SVT Raptor models.

  • Rear Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2012 Ford F150 with a Camper That Also Tows Trailer
  • For your setup you would be best served getting an air bag kit again. It's the best suspension enhancement I can recommend for you since you plan on towing a trailer as well. This way you can air up the bags when you have the camper without the trailer, and then when towing the trailer deflate them and use the weight distribution system. The use of rear suspension enhancement like the Timbren along with a weight distribution kit is not recommended. They will tend to work against one...

  • Can Timbren Suspension Kit # TFR1504D Be Added to a 2012 Ford F-150 That Has a Lift Kit
  • I spoke with with my technical contact at Timbren and he informed me the Timbren Rear Suspension System # TRF1504D that you want to install on your 2012 Ford F-150 will work in conjunction with your current lift leveling kit. The # TRF1504D comes with spacers which should work in your application, however, he told me that if you still see that you have room in between the bottom of the rubber spring and axle, that you will need an additional spacer such as Timbren 1 inch spacer # A25723-90AH...

  • Rear Axle Helper Springs for a Sagging 2010 Ford F-150 Crew Cab 4x4
  • When a vehicle sags because of a trailer the best solution is weight distribution like you are using. Adding suspension enhancement is not always the best solution because the weight distribution system and the helper springs can work against each other. It is possible that the weight distribution system you are using is either not adequate for the tongue weight or it is not set up with the proper tension on the spring bars. When the correct capacity system is used and properly set...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement To Reduce Sag When Towing Trailer With 2012 Ford F-150
  • If you have sag at the back of your 2012 F-150 when towing a load that stays pretty consistent then the best way to help with that is by installing suspension enhancement like part # TFR1504D for a 4-wheel drive or part # TFR1502D if you have a 2-wheel drive truck. These are rubber springs that do not effect the ride of your truck when it is not under load but when towing will become more rigid to help add additional support. Air springs like part # F2525 are a better for your truck...
