Decent two speed winch. A big improvement over the original single speed winch with just the right mechanical advantage for winching the boat up the final half of the trailer. 308409

After a year of use in fresh-water bolted to a galvanized boat trailer, the winch base is beginning to rust. Im painting with galvanized paint to try and preserve it longer.

Replaced the same model winch on my boat trailer so mounting and fit was perfect, 2 speed gearing helps on steeper ramps and because it did not come with a strap I was able to pick the exact length for my application. Great price and support from eTrailer always and quick shipping. 844881

Replaced this exact winch on my boat trailer which was original equipment and provided 18 years of service being used 200-300 days per year for a fishing charter business. 711090

The winches were received, but I see the they do not lock in both forward and reverse directions. I need the winch to lock in both winding directions. Can you please let me know what you recommend as replacement winches? 575727

It looks like youre wanting a brake winch. A brake winch will hold the load in forward or reverse, and will not freewheel. If you use the provided link, you can see our ion of brake winches.

Ask the Experts about this Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch

  • Recommended Hand Winch For 2,090 lb Pro Craft 180 Boat
I did some research on the 1998 18 foot Pro Craft 180 and from what I could find it weighs about 2,090 lbs. If your trailer does not have rollers or wood bunks you will need a winch that is rated for half the weight of the boat. I recommend the The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725 with a 2,000 lb capacity which would be a bit more than you need. The ZINC plating will resist rust and 2 speed operation. It uses a polyester strap for which I recommend part # DL24249 which has a 4,000...

  • Recommended Strap for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch DL14725
Yes, the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook part # DL24251 will work just fine with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL14725. However, please note that you will be limited to the weight capacity of the winch which is 2,000 lbs because it is lower than that of the strap which is 4,000 lbs but this won't cause any issues it is just something that you need to be conscious of.

  • Short 6 Inch Handle for Dutton-Lainson Winch DL2000A
We do have a short 6 inch handle that will work with the model DL200A Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725. The correct part is the Replacement Winch Handle for Dutton Lainson Winch - 6" # DL70336.

  • Recommendation to Replace Shelby 5408 Trailer Winch
If the gear is broken on your existing Shelby winch, I recommend simply replacing the entire unit, as Shelby is no longer in business and replacement parts are not readily available. To replace your Shelby 5408 model, I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish # DL14725. This is very similar to your winch that features a 2,000 pound capacity and 2 speeds for horizontal pulling applications. The zinc TUFFPLATE finish will also do a great job of preventing rust and...

  • Is There a Left-Hand Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch
We do carry a left-hand winch very similar to the 2,000 lb capacity winch # DL14725 you asked about, with the only difference being the left-hand winch has a larger 2,500 lb capacity. The winch you need is the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - Left Side Handle - 2,500 lbs # DL15403. The correct cable for this winch is the Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook # DL24104.

  • What is the Bolt Hole Mounting Pattern for Dutton Lainson Trailer Hand Winch # DL14725
I will be happy to show you the mounting hole dimensions for hand winch # DL14725. I have included a picture that shows them for you. This winch can be used with either a strap, # DL24249, or a cable # DL24104. Straps are much better for marine applications because they will not rust. The strap is rated for 4,000 pounds and the cable is rated for 3,500 pounds. You always want the cable or strap capacity to be at least 1.5 times greater than the winch capacity or higher for safety.

  • How to Choose a Replacement Hand Winch
The correct winch for your needs will depend on several factors, such as what you're using the winch for, where you're using it and the amount of weight of the load. If by 'DL 2000' winch, you're meaning a Dutton-Lainson winch capable of pulling 2000 lbs, the # DL14725 would be an okay choice. However, that 2000 lb capacity is with one layer of rope/cable wrapped around the drum. With each subsequent layer, the capacity is reduced by 10 %. This is a two speed winch, with a gear ratio...

  • Boat Trailer Winch Recommendation for a 1982 Sea Ray 22-1/2 Foot Boat
Sea Ray made a lot of boats in the 1982 model year. Models listed at 22 feet top out at just over 4,000 pounds. Since the trailer you are using has rollers you can go with a winch that is rated lower than the actual weight of the boat. However, going with a higher capacity winch will make it easier on the winch so it will last longer and easier on you when cranking in the boat. For marine applications I recommend a winch that either comes with a strap or that can be used with a strap....

  • Using Winch to Hold Boat in Place on Trailer During Travel
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725 referenced in your question has a freewheel design that will not actually hold a load in the forward or reverse directions. To hold a load in place you will want to go with a brake winch. For a similarly rated modeI recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15721 that features a 2,500 pound weight capacity and an automatic braking mechanism that will lock a load in place. The elongated mounting holes on the plate will allow compatibility with...

  • Hand Winch Recommendation for Sailboat Trailer with Roller Bunks
Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks the ratio is 1 to 1. So you have rollers and a long winching distance so 2 to 1 is the correct ratio. That means you would need a 1,500 lb winch at minimum. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725...

  • Strap Recommendation for Dutton Lainson 2k Trailer Hand Winch
The recommended strap for Dutton Lainson winch # DL14725 is a 25 foot long, 4,000 pound capacity strap, # DL24249. For a 20 foot strap with 4,000 pound capacity use # DL24242. You always want the strap to be at least 150 percent of the winch capacity for safety.

  • Cable Length Capacity on the DL14725
Good question. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - 2,000 lbs part # DL14725 is rated to hold 58 feet of 9/32" cable. That cable has a diameter is 3 times that of what you intend to use on it with the 3/16. With that said this winch should be able to handle 174 feet of the 3/16" cable that you require. Keep in mind that you would need to pay careful attention when spooling up the cable to ensure that it is tight and layered properly.

  • Hand Winch Recommendation for Building a Homemade Log Arch
You could use just about any type of hand winch you would like to build a log arch. You will need to determine the capacity that you will need to lift the logs you will be cutting. Having been around a farm most of my life, I would think that a 2,000 lb capacity winch would be sufficient, since you will not need to lift the whole weight of the log with it and if you are cutting fire wood you could reduce the length of the log. I posted a link to all of the 2,000 lb winches that we stock...

If you had a strap that narrow, it could work, but the winch is not really designed for that application.
