Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch - Standard Hand Winch - DL14725 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Dutton-Lainson hand winch. Now this is a heavy-duty winch that's designed for horizontal pulling. So, it's ideal for boat trailers and utility trailers as well as other pulling applications.A winch allows you to gain mechanical advantage, which makes it a lot easier to pull heavier or large items. This unit features nice high-carbon steel gears. So that provides strength and durability for a winch that will really last a long time. Also, it features permanently lubricated bearings.

It does have a two-speed design, so that allows you to pull the line in quickly, or you can change speeds and pull it in slower, but with more mechanical advantage, which is ideal for those really heavy items. The handle is included, this is your crank handle. It's got a nice ergonomic handle grip, which makes cranking easy and comfortable. Handle length is around 9 1/2 inches, and that's from the center of the attachment point to the center of the hand grip. How you change speeds on this winch Basically, you just change the handle location. So, if you put the handle on here, that's one speed. Push up and remove the handle from that post, place it on this one.

Snaps into place. That's another speed. So, you can quickly and easily change speeds by changing the location of the handle. So, the two-speed design, again, allows you to pull in quickly or slower, but with maybe more mechanical advantage in the slower setting. It does feature a free spool setting for each speed, so just flip ratchet inaudible 00:01:45, and you can extend your line out quickly and easily if needed. The unit's made from durable steel, and it does feature a zinc TUFFPLATE finish, which does a great job at resisting rust and corrosion.

Product's made in the U.S.A., and features a capacity of 2,000 pounds. The drum hub diameter is 1 1/8 inches. Gear ratio is 14.4 to 1, and 5.4 to 1 depending on which speed you're using. So that means for every 5.4 full turns of the handle, the hub completes one rotation, or for every 14.4 full turns of the handle, it completes one rotation, depending on, again, which speed you're using. The winch does not come with a cable or a strap. So that will need to be provided separately or on your own.

We have multiple options at etrailer.com to choose from if you're in need. It does, however, come with a cable keeper. So that is included as well as the hardware to get that attached. Now, this winch will accommodate a 9/32 inch diameter cable that measures up to 58 feet long. It'll also accommodate a strap that is up to about, I'm going to say, 2 1/4 to 2 3/8 inch wide by 38 feet long. Or you could do a 2 inch wide strap by 38 feet long. We have those available at etrailer.com if you're interested.I did take a measurement of the overall length. So from very back to very front's about 8 7/8 inches long. Overall width from outer post to outer edge of hardware on this side, is 6 1/2 inches wide. Overall height is 7 inches tall. The base has multiple mounting holes for easy mounting. Hardware not included, so that will need to be provided on your own. But the base measures 4 3/4 inches wide by 6 1/4 inches long. That's going to do it for today's look at the Dutton-Lainson hand winch with the 2,000 pound capacity.

Decent two speed winch. A big improvement over the original single speed winch with just the right mechanical advantage for winching the boat up the final half of the trailer. 308409

After a year of use in fresh-water bolted to a galvanized boat trailer, the winch base is beginning to rust. Im painting with galvanized paint to try and preserve it longer.

Replaced this exact winch on my boat trailer which was original equipment and provided 18 years of service being used 200-300 days per year for a fishing charter business. 711090

The winches were received, but I see the they do not lock in both forward and reverse directions. I need the winch to lock in both winding directions. Can you please let me know what you recommend as replacement winches? 575727

It looks like youre wanting a brake winch. A brake winch will hold the load in forward or reverse, and will not freewheel. If you use the provided link, you can see our ion of brake winches.

Do you have a question about this Trailer Winch?

  • Recommended Strap for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch DL14725
  • Yes, the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook part # DL24251 will work just fine with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL14725. However, please note that you will be limited to the weight capacity of the winch which is 2,000 lbs because it is lower than that of the strap which is 4,000 lbs but this won't cause any issues it is just something that you need to be conscious of.

  • How to Pick Out Boat Winch for 2,550 lb Boat
  • Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks like what you currently have the ratio is 1 to 1. The Fulton Winch # F142424 that you referenced should work well for you although it may be a bit overkill. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725...

  • Recommendation to Replace Shelby 5408 Trailer Winch
  • If the gear is broken on your existing Shelby winch, I recommend simply replacing the entire unit, as Shelby is no longer in business and replacement parts are not readily available. To replace your Shelby 5408 model, I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish # DL14725. This is very similar to your winch that features a 2,000 pound capacity and 2 speeds for horizontal pulling applications. The zinc TUFFPLATE finish will also do a great job of preventing rust and...

  • Winch Recommendation for Boat that Weighs 1,600 lbs

With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks like what you currently have the ratio is 1 to 1. Based on your current 1,300 lb winch struggling with a 1,600 lb boat I'd recommend matching the winch capacity with at least the weight of your boat....

  • What is the Bolt Hole Mounting Pattern for Dutton Lainson Trailer Hand Winch # DL14725
  • I will be happy to show you the mounting hole dimensions for hand winch # DL14725. I have included a picture that shows them for you. This winch can be used with either a strap, # DL24249, or a cable # DL24104. Straps are much better for marine applications because they will not rust. The strap is rated for 4,000 pounds and the cable is rated for 3,500 pounds. You always want the cable or strap capacity to be at least 1.5 times greater than the winch capacity or higher for safety.

  • How to Choose a Replacement Hand Winch
  • The correct winch for your needs will depend on several factors, such as what you're using the winch for, where you're using it and the amount of weight of the load. If by 'DL 2000' winch, you're meaning a Dutton-Lainson winch capable of pulling 2000 lbs, the # DL14725 would be an okay choice. However, that 2000 lb capacity is with one layer of rope/cable wrapped around the drum. With each subsequent layer, the capacity is reduced by 10 %. This is a two speed winch, with a gear ratio...

  • Hand Winch Recommendation for Sailboat Trailer with Roller Bunks
  • Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks the ratio is 1 to 1. So you have rollers and a long winching distance so 2 to 1 is the correct ratio. That means you would need a 1,500 lb winch at minimum. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725...

  • The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725 referenced in your question has a freewheel design that will not actually hold a load in the forward or reverse directions. To hold a load in place you will want to go with a brake winch. For a similarly rated modeI recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15721 that features a 2,500 pound weight capacity and an automatic braking mechanism that will lock a load in place. The elongated mounting holes on the plate will allow compatibility with...

  • How to Reverse the Winch Strap Feed from Top to Bottom on a Worm Gear or Standard Trailer Winch
  • To get the cable to come off of the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, item # DL10974, you would need to crank the winch until the cable is all the way unwound from the winch drum and then continue cranking in the same direction until the cable is wound back onto the drum in the opposite direction it was wound before. This will reverse the feed of the cable from top to bottom or vice versa and will also reverse the direction the handle needs to be turned to winch a load with the winch. If...

  • Boat Trailer Winch Recommendation for a 1982 Sea Ray 22-1/2 Foot Boat
  • Sea Ray made a lot of boats in the 1982 model year. Models listed at 22 feet top out at just over 4,000 pounds. Since the trailer you are using has rollers you can go with a winch that is rated lower than the actual weight of the boat. However, going with a higher capacity winch will make it easier on the winch so it will last longer and easier on you when cranking in the boat. For marine applications I recommend a winch that either comes with a strap or that can be used with a strap....

  • Hand Winch Recommendation for Building a Homemade Log Arch
  • You could use just about any type of hand winch you would like to build a log arch. You will need to determine the capacity that you will need to lift the logs you will be cutting. Having been around a farm most of my life, I would think that a 2,000 lb capacity winch would be sufficient, since you will not need to lift the whole weight of the log with it and if you are cutting fire wood you could reduce the length of the log. I posted a link to all of the 2,000 lb winches that we stock...

  • Can the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10970 be Used with a Strap
  • The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10970, is designed for a cable no wider than 9/32 inches. If you had a strap that narrow, it could work, but the winch is not really designed for that application. A comparable winch that is rated for use with a strap is the Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch, # DL14725. This winch has a drum capacity that can handle a strap 38 feet in length.
