Video Transcript for Optronics Standard Trailer Light Kit Installation

Today, on a standard 4 by 8 utility trailer, we're going to be installing the Optronics Standard Taillight Kit, part number TL29BK. Now with this install kit will come 25 feet of 4-pole wire. The 4-pole wire will do both running, turn and brake signal circuits for both sides. It will have two taillights, one for the driver and passenger's side. This one would be for the driver's side as it's also for the license plate bracket. Here's our license plate bracket. It has pre-drilled holes for mounting behind the taillight on the driver's side and then hanging our license plate from it.

Now, for this application we won't be using license plate bracket. Also provided with our install kit will be two-side marker lights. These marker lights are designed to mount to the side of your trailer be lit up with the running light circuit. However, since it's only a 4 by 8 trailer, it's not required to have them and we won't be installing it. The trailer came originally equipped with a 4-pole harness. However, as you can see over time it's been cut, broken and reconnected several times. Our first step is going to be removing the old harness and wiring.

For today's install purposes we're going ahead and put it on our lift and we'll raise it up to get a better idea what it looks like underneath. We got a removal. We're going to go ahead and remove the self-tapping screw that secures the ground. Next, I'm going to go ahead and cut off tail-end here. Then I'll bring in the new wiring harness. We can tape it to the older manufacturer's harness and use that to pull our new harness through the coupler tube.

I'll take the new harness which you'll see a 4-wire harness. We have a brown and yellow to go up the driver's side and a brown and green to go up the passenger's side. You can just simply tape that to the old harness and then pull it through. Once we have it pulled through, we'll just go ahead and remove the old harness. As you can see the old harness you could just staple to the bottom of the bed of our trailer, so we're going to just remove the staple. Because we have 25 feet of wire, I'm going to bundle up some wire just behind the coupler tube just in case any necessary repairs needed in the future.

We'll continue routing our wiring underneath up both sides towards the taillight. Be very careful not to pierce your wiring. Now with our wire run here at the back, go ahead and trim off some of the excess. I'll leave some of the excess as it will help if there's any more breakage or abuse. So now with my excess marked off, go ahead and cut any extra wire then we'll take two wires, split them and strip them back. Here we have the passenger's side or right hand. On this side is our stop and turn signal which will be our green wire. On this side will be the taillight or brown wire. Fastening design for these taillights is simply to push in, pass the middle tab and then we'll grab the wire and create our electrical connection. Now, once we have them pushed in place we group here together 00:03:18 so they dont get pinched when you secure it. We can remove the two flange nuts, line this up 00:03:25 with the pre-drilled holes in our trailer and then reinstall the flange nuts. Now, with the lights secured, move over to the driver's side and repeat the same process. I'm going to bundle up some wire just behind the lights just in case any necessary repairs are needed in the future. Next, I'm going to move back to the trailer tongue where we can go ahead and take our 4-pole connector and ground it, take the white wire, strip it back, add a small ring terminal. Then we can use a new self-tapper to re-secure it here to the trailer tongue. Next, there are couple things we can do to bundle up our wires here. One, we can tape it up which we'll go ahead and show you. We'll use some wire loom, part number 459075-1 and we'll need approximately 2 feet, so we'll just take our wire loom that's already split, beat it over the wire and I'll uphold my wire in place so I'll put a little bit of electrical tape on it. Now, with our 4 pole harness wrapped up it's ready to go. Now, once you finish your install, we're just going to use our test spots, turning on the taillights, and then testing the left brake and left turn signal, and then the right brake will also come along, and the right turning signal. This would complete the install and testing of the Optronics Standard Trailer Light Kit part number TL29BK on our utility trailer. .

Used this kit to replace the lighting on a European bike rack to work with US hitch and wiring. On the plus side it worked perfectly the first time I tested it and with a few cable ties and an additional mending plate, a couple of dollars in Home Depot, it was pretty easy to install. On the down side, there were no instructions in the box so had to rely on the online video, and pushing the wires into the connection holes on the lights was a lot more tricky than it looked. Overall I am very pleased with the product. 656480

Where are the instructions?? I reviewed all of this e-mail, not even a clue on how you connect to tail lights. How to you wire side lights? This looks like a pending return. 540377

Looks nice, but no instructions whatsoever. The lights have copper holes in them, that are partially labeled, but some of the labels don't make any sense. And how can you stuff a twisted wire into a hole, it just doesn't work. How many engineers does is take to screw up a simple trailer light set? A pain in the butt, I wish I have never bought them. Will not by these sorts of things on line again, will go to local farm stores. 554970

Each lamp will have two holes that are used for connection points. On the drivers side, one hole is for the brown wire, which is the running lamps. The other is for the left turn/brake lamp, which is the yellow wire. On the passenger side, one hole is for the brown running lamp wire, the other for the green right turn/brake lamp wire. To the wires, use a small flat blade screwdriver and push it in the small hole under the larger hole where the wire s. Push the stripped wire in until it stops, then remove the screwdriver. This locks the wire into place.

The trailer kit I ordered arrived in a timely fashion and the items included are solid nice looking pieces. I reviewed the video on installation and found the wiring and installation of the lights to be extremely simple. I rewired my entire trailer, replaced the tail lights and added the running lights (did not have these before I ordered the kit) in about two hours. Could have done it faster but I was in no rush. I would definately recommend the company and products to anyone in need of replacing wiring and/or lights. 170966

Product is still in place, still working beautifully. Did have to replace on of the tail lights but that was due to an issue with the tilt in the trailer and the light getting smashed on a rock -

Again you Guys have made life easy with your video and helpful tips! Like your shipping packages as well. Compact with little waste of materials. I used this product as a light system for my motorcycle carrier when I haul my TW200. With the bike on the carrier the vehicle taillights are blocked. The TL29K light kit was what I used to solve this problem. 322131

  • How To Ground Trailer Tail Lights Without a Ground Wire To a Wooden Surface
The Standard Trailer Light Kit with 25' Wire Harness part # TL29BK as I am sure you noticed grounds via the mounting hardware therefore there is not a singular ground wire. In order to attach this light to a wooden surface you will need to run a ground wire yourself up to the trailer tongue using the mounting studs on the back with ring terminals part # DW05705-1 and wire part # 12-1-1. The other option you have is to use the Peterson LED Light Kit for Trailers part # V944 which does...

The wire is insulated which protects it well from the elements. I recommend getting a junction box like # 38656 because it makes it easier to diagnose problems when using a junction box. If your trailer has an aluminum frame then you need to run a wire from the connector's white wire back to the mounting studs of each light in order to get a good ground.
